[0936] Boy Toy I
└ posted on Thursday, 9 November 2017, by Novil
- Zoey: How long will you keep lying to yourself?
- Landon: What do you mean?
- Zoey: Let me explain.
- Zoey: Larisa and you have nothing in common. Your relationship is solely based on physical attraction. To add insult to injury, Larisa doesn’t even find you particularly handsome. She’s only with you because she can bend you to her will. For her, you’re only a toy that serves her sexual gratification, not an equal partner.
- Zoey: In essence, you’re nothing but Larisa’s little boy toy.
- Landon: Sweeet!
- Zoey: Nooo! You’re not allowed to like that!
Woo, first comment! Zoey seems so disappointed his spirit wasn’t crushed.
I think you should take your own advice there, Zoey.
Of course, their relationship only looks shallow on the surface (much like Larissa herself, who goes to great lengths to make herself appear shallow and carefree), in reality, it’s much deeper, Landon is nice and treats her well.
She neglected to point out why that is a bad thing. Thusly her argument failed.

But she’s a lesbian, unless she likes Larisa…
Anyway, today is technically Wednesday, so Zoey is sort of breaking the contract, in America.
for all her piss and vinegar, she has a kernel of truth in that bluster.
We really haven’t seen Landon and Larisa on ‘normal’ dates and we’re not really sure what they do have in common to create/support a long term relationship.
Have they talked about the long term? Probably not considering their ages (and with Lar’s condition it’s very doubtful she would bring up anything about them ‘long term’ which might lead to Landon having questions she doesn’t want to answer just yet…or at all.)
But counter to that is the fact is how many at that age thought beyond ‘why’ they are going out and not just enjoying the moment and saying ‘I’ve got a boy/girl friend so yay!” and run with it however long it lasts?
They are opposites-Larisa is a wild spirit, much more comfortable with herself that most other girls her age (the ‘birthday pic’ to Landon proves that) and she’s going to live life as much as she can as fast as she can-and who really can fault her for that?
Landon seems like the quiet, thoughtful type-which could be the exact kind of person Larisa needs-someone to be a voice of reason in her whirlwind life. Larisa is going to burn her candle at both ends, but Landon can and will perhaps help that candle last longer than if she were by herself.
They might never have a burning, passionate love but a quiet love full of mutual respect is something that shouldn’t be wrote off if it’s how they balance out and it makes them happy.
But as said above, Zoey should take her own advice: she’s lonely and jealous to a degree and needs to build herself up before tearing others down. If/when she finds someone that helps complete her she will realize her mis-focus on this issue.
Wow. Careful, Zo, hell hath no fury like a succubu–ohhhhhhh, hang on, you don’t KNOWWWW, do you…
Forget I spoke… tum te tum…
@ oledakaajel:
He has his crush’s open affection. Zoey has been thoroughly rejected by her crush.

Replace crush with user and it makes more sense.
Zoey is lesbian, and is known to love Larisa, so this is a book case of jealously. Too bad she missed the shot with Landon. On the other hand, Landon treats Larisa so much better than Zoey would (and even better than a succubus as Larisa is worth of!).
Someone’s salty.
I think you’re just jealous that she has a relationship and you don’t.
@ ajgelado:
Pretty sure Zoey’s only been shown to like Michelle so far. I don’t recall her ever displaying attraction to Larisa.
I see that most people are forgetting that Larissa actually likes Landon because he has genuine affection for her. Remember the strip with the dolls? She likes a romantic, and Landon fits the bill. Hell, she tried to be someone his parents approved of.
Maybe the romantic in me is blinded by such idealism, but by Jove, ideals are all we’ve got.
Landon: Wait – so what would you suggest I do?
Zoey: Leave her, be lonely.
Landon: No… that doesn’t sound like fun.
Zoey: But it’s what you should do! It’s what is supposed to happen. It’s realistic! It’s right! Where’s your integrity as a nerd? Where are you going? Come back!!!
Landon (over his shoulder): And don’t you know that Marilyn Monroe was married to playwright Arthur Miller?
Zoey: *!* *staggers back, sags onto bench* … *pulls out smartphone, checks websites* …It’s true! The universe was broken before Larisa even got here… ;_;

Next strip, Landon reading the comments. Now that would be annihilating the 4th wall. Remember, they can see us and so probably read the comments in order to improve their acting.
Zoey is clearly jealous of what Larisa and Landon share together.
Is there an antithesis of a succubus? Maybe a Nun? Is Zoey turning into a Nun?
oledakaajel wrote:
So what? She could be jealous that the two are in a relationship and she’s single. She doesn’t need to be jealous because of one specific person.
…trouble in paradise, Zoey?
Landon’s response in the last panel may as well have said “Success!”

Hmmm a lesbian nun… I dont think Novil is that devious…
Zoey is wrong anyway…
But more important question- who is the dictator which say what anyone is allowed to like or not?
Smells of 1984 thought police…
Personal likings are private thing.

So you’re saying everyone without a relationship is incomplete?
That’s more of “I need you to make me happy” or “I need you to complete me”
Who needs that kind of pressure?
Also, I agree with several people here that Larisa and Landon have deep mutual affection for each other.
Anyone else hearing T-Rex songs right now?!?
@ oledakaajel:
I thought this had been established in an earlier strip which was also used as a site advert?
Landon already knows what Zoey just told him, and he’s ok with it. In fact Larisa said so in front of him.

I would point out that though Zoey is wrong in her assumptions – more or less – Landon liked his place in those assumptions.
So we have two situations: Zoey being wrong and LL’s relationship being deep enough on one hand, and Landon being happy with what Zoey presented on the other.
(Plus Zoey’s presumable jealousy.)
Granted, he’s yet a child. But being a ‘boy toy’ as described in the strip is not healthy to any person. So Zoey’s final reaction is correct about Landon’s being wrong.
Reminds me of these lines by Leonard Cohen:
@ Thisguy:
exactly. he clearly sees all that she´s hiding inside, which is the true reason she´s dating him and not one of the idiots slobbering after her for her looks and flirty ways
Keep enjoying the ride, Landon

It is funny because Novil reversed the gender roles here, men are less commonly regarded as victims when they are in a relationship were the woman is the dominant part and plays with them as long as said woman is attractive and gives the man physical attention and does not demand too outrageous efforts and sacrfices in return. The idea that some men are content with a relationship mainly based on the physical side seems to be quite widely accepted, though it certainly is not everybody’s cup of tea. The gender reversed version is less accepted. The “thought police” usually goes under the name of “gender equality” or “feminism”. If a girl publically states that she is perfectly happy with being her male partners toy, she will probably eiter face a shitstorm about how she is a disgrace for all modern women or be declared a poor misguided brainwashed maniac that needs the help of a psychiatrist. A male author having a female character state something like this will get an even greater shitstorm and will be accused of being a misogynistic pig.
Truth is, there are people from both genders who are ok with or even appreciate being the weaker, submissive part in a relationship, which is not necessary a bad thing, as long as it doesn’t develop into an unhappy dependance on an abusive partner.
Why things like that bother other people? Even if it’s true, let the nerd have his good time with the school hottie!
Larisa faced Landon’s parents (well… his mom. The dad was ok) with resolute stoicism, for Pete’s sake.
Larisa just live life in the short, for there’s little to be expected from her future. And she’s doing it with a boy who not only care a great deal for her, but is very short a great guy from Cloud. They’re fine.

My general experience is that the people who put the most energy into tearing others down are weak souls who need the most building up.
@ HMRC4EVR:
You may be overanylizing this a bit, but I see your point.
Although, Larisa did try to be normal for Landon’s parents. I can’t think of her doing that for anyone else.
Someone’s jealous.
Atta boy!
Some people just take what they can get I guess. Then again, between her becoming a succubus and her pyro-tendencies, can he really leave even if he wanted to?

This page should be rated 18+ because it contains a cunt getting destroyed.
There are adults that pay good money for that kind of thing Zoey.
Who is she to tell others what they are allowed to like and enjoy.
End result from this will be trois if Larissa finds out.
Zoey… you’re talking to a teenage male nerd. Any sort of affection is good enough for them
@ someguy:
We actually did address Landon being in an abusive relationship with a domaneering woman. Only it was his mother, not Larisa.
Ot was also addressed that Landon’s father was later able to get both him and his son out of that abusive relationship.
Huh, I just realized that in the same strip that we discovered Landon’s parents were getting divorced, we also found out Larisa was terminally ill.
That was really excellent writing, honestly…
I think this is the first time I’ve not seen an accompanied transcript.
@ Rateus:
That was Michelle – y’know, the girl she’s always hanging around, the one last seen nuzzling her – not Larisa.
Has anyone yet explained why it’s bad to be a toy boy? Many a teenage boy would be only too happy if he could play that role, and many a grown man, too.
