[0940] Red Delicious
└ posted on Thursday, 23 November 2017, by Novil
Loosely based on a very funny Reddit comment I read.
- Sign: Red Delicious
- Larisa: Red Delicious?! Those still get sold… and bought?!
- Larisa: You may be red, but you sure as hell ain’t “delicious,” you bland and mealy excuse for an apple!
- Sandra: Calm down, Larisa, people are staring.
- Larisa: Calm down?!
- Larisa: How can you calm down at the sight of a country fraught with bad apples and people who just don’t care?!
- Sandra: Interesting choice of words.

Mutsu’s are definitely where it’s at. Crunchy and tart. (Granny Smith were God’s prototype for the Mutsu. Honeycrisps are an honourable attempt.)
My huge surprise was Red Prince. They’re quite new (to me at least), and as far as I can tell they’ve been genetically designed (bred) to be eaten in February through April after they’ve aged for the right length of time. The skin is not perfect, but miraculously enough, they are crisp and tart months after every apple is mush.
A boon to cold winters here in Canada.

Maybe they got the reference, but just felt like taking a break from politics. Even dedicated political junkies such as myself like to have space for other things. (Granted, my personal political views mostly revolve around liberating everyday life from politics.)

I’m no fan of the guy, and in fact a frequent critic, but that seems like a tremendous stretch. Even restricting myself to actual national leaders, I could make a pretty long list of worse people. If nothing else, the damage our Idiot in Chief can do is fortuitously limited by his basic incompetence. His only real talents are for self-promotion and spending other people’s money. (Given that skill-set, it’s amazing he didn’t go into politics sooner…)

Yeah, I think it has to do with the processing. How close they were to being ripe when harvested, and how much they were chemically ripened after harvesting. I was managing a con suite this year and bought Red Delicious as part of our fruit and they were sweet and juicy, but I’ve had to suffer through plenty of dry and mealy ones. I tend to eat more Gala than anything else. I did see a 4H display where they had made pies using different apple varieties and they concluded that Golden made the best pie, even beating out Granny Smith.
I guess you need to add a black and yellow fruit to make the criticism *really* apropos.
Larisa is quite right and most of said bad apples are sitting in elected offices, everywhere.
Spartan, Fuji, Gala, Pink Lady are some of my favorites. Granny Smiths are great if they’re ripe- there’s a fine line between crisp and tart, and rock-hard and sour. But yeah, I hate soft, mealy, sugary Red Delicious (I’d probably have to try one from the tree to be convinced otherwise).
Gotta rep my hometown apples: Braeburn, both cheap and crisp, that’s all most people need in an apple really.
I literally just saw a very similar comparison in a Last Week Tonight video on police accountability. “At least we got the red part right!”
@ Nachum:
Because Red Delicious are… not the most popular. Regardless of personal tastes, it seems amusingly ironic to dub an apple despised by many- myself included- as “delicious”.
@ MidoriLuna:
Heck no Gala apples all the way!
People who just don’t care? I haven’t met any of those yet. Everybody seems to hold violently intense opinions one way or the other. That seems to be the crux of the problem, in fact: people are choosing extreme things they know are bad just to stick it to the other side. The anger at the opponent has become more important to most people than the issues themselves. What we really need is a center party to help pull people together. And to get that, we need a better voting system.
I prefer apples that are crunchy when you bite into them.

Agreed, the country is badly fractured and these fundamental disagreements may indeed end in violence.
I mean, some claim Red Delicious are actually tolerable, when any reasonable person (and most of us here) knows that they’re evil incarnate. How can we be expected to share a country as these folks?
I like Red Delicious, but perhaps the place I buy them sources them locally so they retain enough freshness to live up to their name?
But I also like Fuji and Pink Lady because I like a little “tartness” in an apple.
And I like the way the last panel cleverly twists it into a political comment.
Sound’s like a lot of the problems that are in the world now day’s really.
People just don’t care enough to fix them.
My mom just loves the Mutsu but where is the love for the humble Macintosh?
@Tom West – I will have to see if I can find those Red Prince you mentioned as the winter season starts here in Southern Ontario.
Mind you, it is all about the Pomelo right now – and please none of those crappy grapefruit wannabes from the states – ugh.
Honey crip@ MidoriLuna:
Damned right, honeycrisp is great. So is the Fuji apple. Red Delicious is everything Larisa said it is, bland and mealy.
Once you could buy Astrakhans. Now THERE was an apple!
The worst issue I can come accross with politics everyday is “I am correct!”. And that everyone else is certainly a fool or bought or whatever.
Come to think of it, that’s not even only a problem with politics but most everything.
“One bad apple don’t spoil the whole bunch, girl!” —the Osmonds.
I’d like to see her reaction to the Cavendish banana vs the Gros Michel
Huh, bad apples.
Babs Seed, anyone? I know I’m not the only brony here~
Of course, there may be some prominent politicians who believe that they are “very fine apples”.
@ N0083rp00F:
Sobey’s carried Red Prince’s starting from about February.
Problem is it’s not that people don’t care it’s that people now refuse to accept others can have a different oppinion on anything so go to extremes to make there stance knowing full well those extremes are just as damaging as what they say they are against but do it anyways just to spite anyone who thinks differently. There are plenty of people everywhere sick of every party or politocal group because they all treat anyone who doesn’t think exactly the same as themseleves
Lol submitted by accident when I hadn’t fineshed i was trying to say supporters of all political groups now treat anyone with a different oppinion the same way Larissa is with the red delicious. These days no one can accept difference of oppinion and are carefully intolerant of any other oppinion than their own.
Well this arc started quietly, but then so did the last two arcs.
Schone van Boskoop. Anything else is not a “real” apple.
What’s irony?
I’m allergic to apples! 🙁
@ poko:
In america the conservatives/republicans use red. This is the rare exception.
In canada, britain, most of europe and most of the rest of the world, Red is used by democrats, liberals, communists, and socialists. Red is recognized the world over as the colour of the left wing of politics.
And as anyone who has studied pitical history knows, the left has been responsible for over 100 million deaths over the last 100 years. And as everyone knows it’s the left that controls hollywood and exploites starlets and young actors. The left is the posterchild of political corruption.
@ Sllimkered:
Tillamook Cheddar is pretty good, medium and sharper is the way to go. Although I do agree that most “Cheese” that is sold in the US is cheese flavored plastic.

How about grafting on a better apple? It’s not like the roots are “Red Delicious” rootstock, anyway.
Oh, at least tomatoes are picked green, and allowed to ripen on the way to market. I suspect apples are probably the same. A few years back, someone tweaked a version of the tomato to lack part of the trigger that causes overripening, allowing those tomatoes to keep longer, and be picked ripe, rather than green and people started shouting about frankenfood.

I blame ABC. During one of the recent elections, American Broadcasting Corporation used a map that used Red, (for challenger,) for the Republican Bush, and Blue, (for incumbent), for Gore, then Vice President.
It was such a close race that the map practically became a meme, and the color labels stuck.
But yeah, it SHOULD be red for Dems and Blue for Repubs, seeing as the Dems are more prone to promote socialist solutions. But it’s not.
“Rode van Boskoop” is the only cake apple worth having now that the green ones died out. For a hand apple I’d say Elstar is not bad, but you have to be lucky to get a good batch.
For me it is the swedish Ingrid Marie that is the favorite. 🙂 (Swedish myself)
I can’t read “bad apple” anymore without thinking of that accursed Touhou video.
VERY interesting choice of words.
@ Trimutius:
HEAR, HEAR!
Yeah, Red Delicioous are the worst but Honeycrisp is overrated. Granny Smiths are best. What? Why is everyone looking at me weird?
I find it very upseting that NO ONE mentioned Cosmic Crisp. Come on, people!
