Norte? Really? Can’t you think of a more creative name, Sandra?
i totally feel with sandra here – i´m a good swimmer, but after a close call in early childhood i can´t jump into a pool, not even from the edge…..and i honestly don´t see the appeal either.
Maybe she needs encouragement from Zoey 😉
@ Brijeka Vervix:
That little girl is encouragement enough.
All I can think of is Doofenshmirtz at the public wetness maker 😛
@ alanaktion:
Remember, your local Public Wetness Maker only contains water on alternating Thursdays.
is that meters or miles?
Press R3 to synchronize, I guess…
Remember Sandy, the difference between ‘dive’ and ‘die’ is a v. So you’re fine, if you were a dude you’d be doomed.
(Yes, I know it’s a terrible joke, but it’s the best spelling joke I could come up with).
Do a flip!
BELLYFLOP!
She’s going to get a wardrobe malfuction if she dives, isn’t she?

Save that for strip 1000.
@ oledakaajel:
No, not “under the radar” enough. Which means go for it any day not publicly celebrating something like #1,000.
@ oledakaajel:
I thought that strip 1000 could be the answer to the Book of Who (?)
For perspective five meters up is about the equivalent height of a two floor house from ground to chimney top.
@ oledakaajel:
Between this and Zoey’s last name suddenly turning into ‘Irvine’ on a poster, I don’t know if that was intentional or a typo.
That little girl in the 4th panel is the same girl who complained about Cloud having his head stuck inside her coke bottle, right?
She should have a name now. Anyone want to name her?
She looks like a Phoebe to me.
@ oledakaajel:I suppose it’s appropriate since she’s jumping from the dreaded “Tabla Cinco” or whatever floats her boat or make her jump from it!
@ Crestlinger:
Speaking of perspective, the angular sizes of objects on the ground are way smaller than they would be at a five meter distance.

It’s not that we never saw her naked:

@ Vicious Sand:
We could always just see her top floating on the water, and Sandra from her back, or embarrassed, with her arms in front of where the top had recently been. Personally, I’d go for the first one.

Probably, but it certainly feels like in panel 3. And I don’t think I’m specially afraid of heights. I can climb viewing platforms and look down without panic attacks. But jumping from a diving board, not so much, really. (1 m, I can handle.)

You’re discussing the perspective, when the panel contains clouds? 😀
As someone with pretty bad acrophobia, who is also prone to vertigo and, to make matters worse, compulsive thoughts to leap out of high places, (e.g., windows and stuff,) yes, this is EXACTLY what it feels like to stand on the 5 metre diving tower… You just stand on the ground and look up, and it doesn’t look so bad. But once you get up… EFF! THAT!
BRING ON FEARLESS FREEP! 😀
That’s about the way I felt first time I stood on a high dive board. ’bout her age, too!
@ M. Mitchell Marmel
Ah paid mah two bits ta’ see the high divin’ act, and Ah’ma gonna’ see the high-divin’ act!

meters, the technically the abbreviation for miles is mi
though when you have a feat of falling (like i do) the difference doesn’t help, Sandra just needs to do what I manged to to do as a kid when i both to try such high dives, cop-out and just do the feet first plunge, it’s easier to convince you body to take the big step, than it is to do a proper dive.
It’s surprisingly easy to injure oneself when falling into water from that high up. I managed to nearly tear my lip in half once when I hit the water at the wrong angle doing a fairly basic trick dive that I’ve done hundreds of times. I was spitting blood for five minutes. When the lifeguard on duty at the lifeguard hut asked how I knew so much about the questions she was going to ask when I went for first aid, it was a bit embarrassing to admit that I knew the proper procedure because I was a lifeguard and swim instructor myself. Then it was annoying that my girlfriend wouldn’t kiss me for two weeks because my lip was all jacked up.
@ Centaur:
Speaking of, given that an outstretched fist is around 10 degrees, slightly less than the angular size of an outstretched foot, and the pool is roughly half the size of her foot, we can estimate the angular size of that pool at 5 degrees. Assuming it’s a standard Olympic sized pool, at 50 meters, that’d give us a rough estimate of distance of something like 573 meters. Or a third of a mile for those who understand freedom units. So she’d not necessarily hit terminal velocity during the jump, but she’d be fairly close to it upon impact. But hey, if Cloud can survive getting his head stuck in a small cola bottle…

There’s a 5 there it checks out
@ Agarax:
I know this defies the Law of Gravity, but, you see, I never studied law! 😉
Despite the Trek reference, I doubt her performance is going to be
…stellar.
Your Calvin’s showing, Sandra.

She doesn’t really have creative names for her alter-egos. Case in point, this, and her Detective persona, ‘Sandy South’.
@ crows:
Well. I’m seeing clouds and very tiny buildings. And clouds are normally between 2-6km (~1.24-3.72mi), so 5 mile-high jumping board would make sense, I guess…
That being said, this jumping board has got to be one of the most advanced structures to date in the history of mankind. The current tallest building (Burj Khalifa) being only 828meters (~1/2 mile).

South is still a more creative name than Norte.
“Where no man has gone before!”
…like that man with the mustache, that apparently went before you about 20 seconds ago, Sandra?
@ MidoriLuna:
Do a barrel roll!
We have not seen Luna in a while – has she been busy?
@ Hinoron:
He had a full head of hair before he jumped, though.
oledakaajel wrote:
…Not really, no. It may only be one letter away, but it’s at least a tiny bit more creative than simply going with an opposite.
5 Meters isn’t that bad. 10 meters, however, required a little bit of coaching and resulted in the ultimate wedgie.
Though the drill sergeant who was coaching us (Marine base field trip back in High School), said that they did the 10 meter jump with full gear on in basic training, so even my experience was tepid compared to the ‘real thing’.
Didn’t Warner Brothers do a similar scene as the last panel in a Bugs Bunny cartoon a long time ago?
