[1008] Extra Point
└ posted on Monday, 30 July 2018, by Novil
Our yearly Gaia artwork contest has just started! The Sandra and Woo artwork contest will follow later this year. The prize money for the Gaia artwork contest is $750! So don’t miss your chance to become one of the winners!
- Larisa: Correct, Sandra. The word “raccoon” traces back to the Algonquin.
- Sign: Algonquin
- Sign: Sioux
- Larisa: Correct, Zoey. The ring-tailed cats are the closest relatives of the raccoons.

- Larisa: Giving an extra point to the one making the funniest face was an ingenious idea!
I don’t get this extra point part… is that why they are making the face or something?
@ Trimutius:
Yes.Yes it is.
A dangerous rule modification. Zoey could get a losing score on the quiz and get the winning score for her “I can’t believe I’m losing!” looks. 🙂
If Cloud was the one who made the idea of extra point for funniest face, props to him.
Huh, Sandra writes “a” while Zoey writes “ɑ”.
Neat.
Oh hey Cloud, forgot you were here.

Of course, that’s unlikely given the judges’ bias
@ cathulion:
I’m not sure they know. These feel too much like a normal continuance of their behaviour from the prior contests. I think it would be funnier if they did not. (It’d make a good tie-breaker too!)
I can’t decide which face + gesture is funnier: Zoey’s “Whooooo’s a loser? THIS nerd!” one in panel two, or Sandra’s “This is you: gakka wakka wakka!'” one in panel three.
And for the record, I’m not taking sides in this feud, so whoever wins, ‘s all good to me as long as it keeps on being this funny.
So those two (Cloud & Larisa) are still at it.
And the one who knows the most about racoons is… Larissa!
The expressions are funneeeee.
Glad to see Cloud again.
Wonder what’s going on with Luna and her boyfriends.
@ Alice Macher:
Zoey’s is more creative tho
I love panel 2. Great expressions from Zoey and Sandra.
I was really starting to wonder where the boys had wandered off to. After all, they were lured here specifically by the promise of “cute girls in bikinis”, so I really wouldn’t expect them to let the girls out of their sight for long.
Sandra isn’t up to speed on the latest research on Procyonid phylogeny!! Embarrassingly, as a PhD in biology, I would have made the exact same mistake since I haven’t revisited that family in a while!! 🙂
My Dad’s grandmother was Algonquin (Algonkin actually), and she called me “Mikinàk” which means “Turtle” because she said I had a hard shell, lol.
I don’t get the link between the Algonkin word for raccoon, “Esiban”, and the modern word though, but, then, I’m no etymologist. 😀
I had to tag this comment on to your post simply for your use of the term “Procyonid”. My brother’s also a biologist, though his specialty is Lesser Tern populations on the east coast (so, more specifically an ornithologist).
Me? I wasted my education on a PhD in Celtic Mythology. LOL Great resume add-on for burger flipping!
Ciao!
@ Saknussem:
‘Raccoon’ comes from the Algonquian (Powhatan) ‘aruhkun’ which is derived from ‘arahkunem’ that means ‘he scratches with the hands’.
The Powhatan peoples come from the mid-Atlantic states. The Algonkin people come from, mainly, NY state, which is several hundred kilometers north of that and a subset of the Algonkin group. It’s mainly called the Virginia Algonkin. My G-Grandmother came from upstate NY. She spoke what I THINK is called Western Abenaki? She lived around Lake George until she died in the early 1970s. I REALLY don’t want to get into an argument. LOL An argument about mainly dead languages is a serious waste of time, but I get what you’re saying about the name coming from the Powhatan Algonkin peoples — thanks for teaching me something new!!
@ Saknussem:
lol that’s just what multiple etymological websites as well as Wikipedia said when I Googled the etymology of raccoon! I hardly know squat about the native people of North America (I’m not even American anyway haha)
