“German revolutionaries occupy a station only after buying a platform ticket.” – German saying based on a similar statement by Stalin.
This strip is also a tribute to the last page of the Donald Duck’s story “Incident at McDuck Tower” by Don Rosa, one of the best comic pages of all time.
I posted my report about my visit of the Comic Con 2019 in Stuttgart:
- Sandra: Uh, the traffic light there is broken. It never turns green. You have to cross the street when it’s free.
- Refugee: I have to cross against the signal?!
- Sandra: Yeah.
- Refugee: But… But!!
- Sandra: Maybe… I can be of help…?
- Refugee:This red light! It’s so bright! I’m getting vertigo! Oh! Oh! Help!
- Refugee: Help me over… Easy… Easy… Whew! There! Finally!
- Sandra: I’m afraid the integration of the Germans into our society will be more difficult than expected.

The last panel should also include a queue of other German refugees waiting to tell the guy off!

Fun fact: Once upon a time I walked across a red traffic light, right in front of a police car, no less. The officer clearly wasn’t amused but he didn’t even bother to fine me.
And yes of course, no sane court would claim that anything that isn’t explicitly allowed should be considered a crime. Laws just could not work like that. Least of all in Germany, by the way.
(Companies would start suing each other about trivial things until nobody would be able to do anything rush from one litigation to another. Think about American patent cases. Then multiply that by how many ways there is to tell someone that it’s not explicitly allowed to sell YELLOW pencils or use ad banners of exactly 123×45 pixels.)
He forgot to mention the children. Not crossing red lights is important to set an example to children!

You can do lots of things. You can even fly – for however long it takes to reach the ground with a big “splat”. That you “can” do something doesn’t mean you should.
In Germany a red light is not some vague recommendation as to how you could behave if you feel like it. When the light is red, you do. Not. Cross! Of course there are people who do it anyway, but it’s not legal. If you do it and you are seen by the wrong person (the kind of person with a uniform and a police badge), the consequences can be more inconvenient than waiting patiently for two more minutes for the green ight. If I remember correctly you can even lose your driver’s license, if this isn’t just your first or second traffic offense (because that’s what it is). A certain number of traffic offenses within a certain time frame and the driver’s license is gone. Not to mention that even a single offense can result in a fine. And if ignoring a red light results in an accident, you might be held fully responsible.
@ HKMaly:
The last page was fun too, but more for people with some background of germany.
@ jb:
You can write a lot of things on paper.
Fact is the crime rate is sinking for years and after 2015 it went slightly up but never exceeded the records from 2005 and before. I dont see a problem. Most of them are ordinary families who want a safe place. Many will stay others will go back so as the many refugees from the former jugoslavia did.

Only few percent get asylum. She should have good reasons.
Most of the people from 2015 and 2016 are considered refugees according to the geneve convention and not seeking asylum.
