Today is a very sad day in the world of comics… 🙁
The saddest.
This is a black page in the annals of animation.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the surviving relatives and the wounded.
Unbelievable.
It was also very bad when Stan Lee died…
But this event shouldn’t make us sad. It should make us ANGRY for all the useless violence on this planet.
So, I’m angry instead…
So, um… I know I’m gonna look like an asshole for not knowing already, but… what happened?
@ AlphaSigma:
Turn up your contrast settings, there’s a link in the text.
A terrible day for art. My heart aches.

Why not both?

But most of the useless violence, including this, was caused by anger. Find a more productive emotion.
Unfortunately the director of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid (pictured above), Hyouka, Full Metal Panic, Lucky Star, The Dissapearance of Suzumiya Haruhi, and others – Takemoto Yasuhiro – is among the missing currently (7/22).
There’s an attempt to help by throwing money at this, with close to USD 2M raised on GoFundMe (click here for campaign). But it’s hard to tell if that’ll be enough to keep KyoAni alive.
Unusually, this time the MSM is helping to discourage terrorists of this kind. The left is painting it as “OMG KyoAni was so progressive, look how many women died!” and the right is mostly “Hurr, terrorist! But not islamist, so, meh.” At least, nobody cares about the murderer’s message.
IMO, there’s something deeply nihilistic about this attack. KyoAni was such a feel-good affair. Imagine watching Haruhi, Lucky Star, Nichijou, K-On, or Tamako Market/Love Story, and then going, okay, time to murder the people who made this. I can imagine what a religious fanatic feels like when murdering “infidels,” or what a militant collectivist feels like when murdering “dissidents,” but I can’t imagine this attacker’s state of mind.
Even though I’m not familiar with their work, I was very saddened when this came on my news feed. It’ll be hard for the studio to bounce back after that kind of loss, both emotionally and workforce-wise. I really hope they can rebuild.
I’ve followed the link in the description and read what this was all about. I may not know how that japanese animation studio works or what they’re working on, but i’m sad about what happened to them.
I’m also very angry at the stupid guy who had the gall of setting that fire. According to what I read in the article, that man accused the studio of “having copied his work”. Tell me this, though: what was the point of destroying the entire building and killing most o the people Inside? he could’ve discussed it with the direction. Instead, he choosed to kill everyone, innocents included.
I hope the japanese government will have no mercy with that cowardly bastard!!!
Very sad. The fatality count is now up to 35, and it’s now confirmed that director Takemoto Yasuhiro and Color Designer Ishida Naomi were among the fatalities of the fire. Director Kigami Yoshiji is still missing.
There are some truly despicable people out there in this world.
