[1140] Optical Illusions

- Larisa: Hello, my name is Larisa, and I’d like to report a bug.
- Customer service agent: If your report concerns the Hubble constant, please press 1. If your report concerns the Banach-Tarski paradox, please press 2, …
- Sandra: One would think a hundred million years would have been more than enough time for such a simple fix of the MammalEye class…
- Sandra: Anyway, do you see the colored field below? Move your face close to the screen and stare at the white dot in the center of the red circle. Stay focused on it for a minute, and then slowly move your head backwards. The circle’s rim will then glow in a brilliant cyan.
- Woo: Raccoons are immune to this kind of trickery of course!
Raccoons are immune, because they don’t see colors anyway, right? 😏
better trick yet : put your nose on the white dot, after staying like that for a full minute, you will look like an idiot
I see Sandra’s wearing the dress that people were arguing about a few years ago…
Nice dress, Sandra!

OMG You’re right! How did you know this?
I didn’t get the first one, until I leaned in, and realized the spiraling lines were orange.
That’s a nice yanny coloured dress that Sandra’s wearing.
Here’s another based on light source. https://www.reddit.com/r/UNBGBBIIVCHIDCTIICBG/comments/37giw1/color_changing_hair_xpost_rgifs/
Ah yes, the return of the dress.

That’s not actually an illusion, though, the hair really does change color. Not pigment, of course, but the light reflected off it is a different color. Purple isn’t a single light color but a mix of blue and red – the “cold white” lamp is probably a mercury vapor lamp which doesn’t emit any red light (it’s mostly blue, green and yellow) which means there’s no red light to reflect (unlike the “warm white” / yellowish lamp which is a continuous spectrum lamp, probably an incandescent one, maybe an LED light) so there is a red portion of light to show the proper violet color.
All I see is a blue sphere around my optical view points.
The flaw to optical illusions that have a method to them like this is that they require you to have a relatively level surface and the ability to approach and withdraw from it without changing its orientation relative to your face. This means that a laptop computer is nigh incompatible.
Also, Sandra’s dress reminds me of a very poorly-handled variation on the same illusion. Rather than something innocuous like a garment, the image was that of a chessboard, and the shadow was cast by a bishop piece. The question was “are colour A and colour B the same?”, with the points referring to different squares. The problem is, if you understand the rules of chess and you’re looking at a chessboard and a bishop and you’re asked about colours, you think ‘colour’ as in ‘colour of the square’, not ‘colour of the pixel’. So those of us who had played chess even once said ‘no’ because the bishop was not allowed on/banned from both squares, and those of us who had not played chess said ‘yes’ because moving the appropriate pixels towards each other revealed their match, and the two parties engaged in a fruitless conflict that resulted in many a wasted meal and achieved nothing.

I had an early mercury vapor lamp for my bedroom light back in the 70’s; It was kind of cool that, when you walked in my room, your lips looked black. No red to reflect off them.
Mind, you could also get a tan off that thing, I’m not surprised they were short-lived for interior lighting.
@ 627235:
I was referring to the infamous dress. 🙂
This wouldn’t be “simple fix of MammalEye class”. Most of optical illusions are result of brutal level of optimization in our optical processing. The goal is to notice predator – or prey – not to enjoy art. The most important ability is therefore edge detection and change detection.
if you want a really good optical effect

save this video and then play it on loop and full screen
stare at the center for 30 seconds to a full minute
then simply look around the room and watch the walls melt.
Are you sure it’s not Betelgeuse ready to go Supernova? Because it’s gonna happen soon (in galactic terms) maybe in the next 200k to 300k years.
@ oledakaajel:
Are you blind? Her dress is clearly laurel colored!
@ nathan:
LOL
SEE THE GLOW
*laughs in kindle web browser*
It does nothing to me. I’m not surprised though as most optical illusions are easily defeated by my superior sensory abilities.
