[1172] The Duality Of God

- Ye Thuza: This is my shrine for Tetsuya Nomura, the director of Final Fantasy VII Remake. Three times a day, I thank him for the wonderful world full of charming characters and gorgeous locations he has created.
- Ye Thuza: This is my voodoo doll of Tetsuya Nomura. Three times a day, I use it to punish him for ruining some of the most emotional scenes with his stupid dementors and for the loony ending.
- David’s father: May I introduce you to George Lucas’ Star Wars?
- Ye Thuza: There is a God. And he has a sick sense of humor…!
And as patient gamer myself … I can fully wait until this “famed” remake is out on whole, bundled, has all bug fixes and improvements and is on discount for lesser price than singular part at release date 🙂

I think stripes about COVID-19 would be vastly more relatable to people than FF and your affection to it. Even if many of your readers are into FF, many others don’t give a damn. Sad truth, just accept it. You are missing a chance of some pretty good dark humor right now. How about Yuna trying to find a cure, Larissa complaining that this is not the apocalypse she wishes for or Cloud and Ye Thuza trying to fight the virus in some crazy way. C’mon, you already showed Yuna dealing with impossible tiny black holes, so virus the size of a golf ball wouldn’t be too much of a stretch.
I almost want to play it just to find out about the differences
I honestly didn’t mind the ending so much. Does FFVII need some kinda cerebral metanarrative about destiny/fate and other such concepts? Not really. They could have just remade everything bit by bit. Lot of people out there are calling it an outright insult to FFVII fans and you know… I just don’t know about that…
I can say I DIDN’T like the swerve itself the story took in the last chapter. Even with all the hints that there were shenanigans goin on, it was still pretty damn abrupt. Anyways, I think the ending was done in such a way that has me cautiously optimistic about future entries. This kind of alteration CAN be done, but it has to be done WELL, and they may have to reel Nomura in at times for it to work.
All that said, I came out of the game feeling warm and fuzzy. I’m a 4th year medical student and will be graduating very soon. If I match, I will be working alongside my peers to fight this pandemic. I must admit that being stuck home and seeing the number of cases and deaths rise has been disheartening but this game has really helped me get out of that slump. It’s a story about hope and the defiance of fate!
@ TemuginKhan:
What if I’m reading webcomics not to be reminded of this pandemic? Escapism is a good market too. Not everything has to be facebook tier “haha relatable”s
@ TemuginKhan:
His comic, his choice.
@ TemuginKhan:
Heart of the city on gocomics is doing quarantine-related strips if you are interested.
I’ll be honest. I always preferred Final Fantasy 6 to Final Fantasy 7. I would love to see how she would react to someone claiming 6 was the superior Final Fantasy. Seems to be it would be like a Zelda debate between if LttP or OoT was better.
@ TemuginKhan:
This is Novil’s comic, it is his choice as to what he puts on it. You are not important enough, nor are you paying him enough (if at all) to demand what he puts into his comic.
In other words, if you don’t like it, smeg off, no-one will even notice you were here.
SPOILERS AHEAD
Yeah, the ending of FF7R was… interesting, to say the least… It really puts emphasis on the “remake” part of the title. As in, they’re remaking FF7, not just making the same game all over again but with updated graphics. Aaand if the theories going around right now are true, that Sephy is trying to fuck over the timeline and get a more favorable result for himself, Aerith is essentially the only character somewhat aware of this, and the “dementors” were basically a WEAPON that the planet created to maintain the original timeline in which its own survival was assured, then the situation is still salvageable… Not saying I’m head-over-heels with the direction, I was perfectly fine with FF7R just being the same game over again but with updated graphics and a few twists, (like Wedge surviving,) but I’m just trying to look at it from the bright side.
Nomura really is way too much in love with meta stories, though. I mean, we had Kingdom Hearts 2 with its data!Twilight Town and message that data/fictional people have hearts that even the greatest minds cannot predict, which was a bit on-the-nose in, you know, a video game… and now he just had to include an inadvertently antagonistic force representing a purist idea of the FF7 remake and make the decision to deviate from the original a part of the game’s central plot.
Pfui, Kingdom Hearts fans already have a shrine/voodoo doll combo for Nomura, and we’ve been visiting them four times a day for years.
@ TemuginKhan
Please no more COVID comics. That’s all XKCD has been doing for weeks. It’s all anyone talks about at work. I’m sick of it. Please more escapism comics, Novil!
@ Stephen:
Actually myself agree to you, also I’d say ff7 has plenty of misplaced fame
because: FF became famous title outside of japan due FF6, that fame was big force in pushing FF7 success, that accompanied by being first 3d FF, first 3d JRPG and first FF outside of nintendo system (previous were bound to nes and snes) made FF7 legend; while gameplay and story wise it was at best between okey and good

that may be so, but when considering how disappointed I have become with series sine ff10 release culminated by ff15 prolly becoming very last ff I bother to invest time to on mainbranch series and noting sqes typical practices of re-releasing bundles combined by sonys will to do discounts; its easy to stay patient
@FF fans:
Their game, their choices. Square Enix, I mean.
Last frame is it r/whoosh ?
@ Trimutius:
I’d guess it’s that the guest has a similar relationship to SW as Ye Thuza has to FF. Lucas wrote great stories, but when people let him write the actual screenplays and direct… we got the prequels.
I hate sand.
Well… for me Star Wars actually ended with most of the Gang being back together at the ending of Crucible book…
and Lando promising that contrary to everyone else, he is too young to retire.
sorry you didn’t like it, I enjoy that they’re Doing A Thing. Keep in mind that the original FF7 ended with time looping.
I mean, the original game had a color-coordinated team of mecha-kaiju wake up to defend the planet from an external threat. We’re not exactly new to incredibly silly sounding things here, even if the shades in the remake seem excessively heavy-handed.
I, for one, can’t wait to see where they go with it. Remaking a story beat for beat is safe and easy, and will guarantee a normal return. But remaking it with a twist is a bold risk that could get you something amazing. More studios, both in movies and video games, need to take risks, and I say we should reward Square Enix for this one.
As for Ff I totally don’t care. But I don’t hate it either. If anything, this comic could be Ye’s version of how to spend the Corona plague. Something would have to get to her to turn the pragmatic, focused, mature Ye Thusa into a shrine worshiping nut. This is probably just her talking to her neighbor.
And yes, all the stuff YT said applies to Star Wars too.
I’ve never had a PlayStation(only had NES, GameCube, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch) and am planning on getting the PS5 and playing the FFVII remake on that. I’ve only watched others play FFVII(original), and not even the whole game. I MIGHT familiarize myself w/ the original on another system, but I have a feeling it’ll be better if I’m not comparing the remake as I play it next year. Yes, PS5 comes out this year, but I’m slow to get to games.

I agree that Ye Thuza is pragmatic and focused and she is also strong and brave. But I don’t think “mature” is a word that comes to mind if I should describe Ye Thuza. 🙂
…wasn’t the original game also famous for its bizarre ending?
@ TemuginKhan:
Honestly, I don’t want to relate to the world. I want to escape it. So many other comics do the “current events” stuff.
I want wacky antics and cute forest animals in a world that is removed from our own so I can ignore the issues of the world for 5 minutes.
In short. Comics about games I have not played are preferable to the depression which is covid19.
@ Taylor:
I believe, for the most part, the game improves upon the original in ALMOST every way. It gives depth to characters that previously had none or very little. The combat is super-slick and intuitive. The music is on-point. The voice acting is just about perfect. Yes, there’s some stupidity to be had thanks to Nomura’s incessant desire to overcomplicate things, but he’s largely held in check…at least for now.
Personaly i agree with jim sterlings video on FF7 remake. its great i knew it would be a changed alt-timeline and while some of the shit in it stinks overall both are worth a play.
As a guy who didn’t play FF7 at its hype point (I was a kid who preferred DBZ) and doesn’t hold the immense love/obsession others have with it, but knows the story pretty much by heart for just appreciating the world design and everything of the time, I’d just like to chime in that I still absolutely loved the remake from start to finish. I played it until the am hours consistently, and while I am nervous about how this unknown and unseeable future of the remake series might be taken, I am generally excited to see how things may be handled. Sure, more of the same may appeal to others, but I don’t think a little change or impossibility to the world of FF7 would do it any serious harm. We still have the original game and I doubt the second volume of the remake series will take a direction so impossible that it won’t feel like FF7. I understand, though, that it’s scary to not know what will come next, but there is a thrill involved with it that definitely makes me want to pre-purchase the next game already. The sequel is an unknown of immense potential that is mouthwatering. It’s a daring move which I have to give the director of the game some credit for deciding to take
@ TemuginKhan:
I agree … I barely know what FF7 is 🙂
(Yeah, I’m older, but a video gamer since 1971 (truly…wrote a clone of Spacewar back then!)
@ TemuginKhan:
Sometimes its not dark humor that people need.
I don’t want to start any blasphemous rumours…

I’m surprised no one has mentioned that the “guest” looks like Lucas himself (sans spectacles).
S&W is my favourite web comic, even if (not being a gamer at all) some of the references and homages pass me by. And as reading the comments sometimes explains what I missed, I usually enjoy that, too. But there is so much misery and trolling and flame wars elsewhere on the Internet that I would be truly grateful if they don’t invade S&W.
One god who love cosplaying and has weird sense of humor…
@ TemuginKhan:
Fuck you, let’em write what they wanna write. Plenty of other places are covering COVID-19, so go read on of those. I’ve only ever played FF13 which I didn’t like (I’ve been told it’s not a good depiction of the series as a whole) so I don’t even understand half of what’s being talked about. But it’s so much better when the creator writes from their soul that despite that fact I’ve enjoyed every instance of it. So you demanding a specific kind of content! What an absolute prick.
@ TemuginKhan:
I don’t remember seeing complaints like this when there were a bunch of comics about Steins;Gate, a game that’s not one of the most hyped video games of all time.@ TemuginKhan:
I don’t remember seeing complaints like this when there were several comics in a row about Steins;Gate, a game which is not one of the most hyped video games of all time. But far more importantly: it’s his comic, and he can write what he wants.
Am I the only one who is cringing at ‘where’ Ye-Thuza has most of the pins stuck in the doll…
@ TemuginKhan:
You may be surprised to learn that some people access entertainment media /to escape/.

Ouch! Indeed I cringe now when I noted.
@ TemuginKhan:
While Sandra and Woo does occasionally reference current events, that is not its main focus.
Final Fantasy VII on the other hand is a very important topic for some of the characters in the comic.
I actually just realized that the comic started in 2008, so Cloud was probably born in 1997 (when FF VII was originally released).
When Yuna was born her parents had moved on to Final Fantasy X 🙂
@ TemuginKhan:
honestly, i´m absolutely GLAD to have one corona-free thing in my life right now!
Honestly, I never really got the hype over FF7. The thing I really remember about it was Aeris getting stuffed into the fridge and late game combat that consisted of setting up your characters to automatically cast Knights of the Round and then auto-res themselves when they died, then going out to a movie or reading a Wheel of Time novel while you left the Playstation running.
@TemuginKhan
Just build your shrine to, and voodoo doll of, Novil and be done with it.
@ RobertS:
No. I discovered your comment reading thru comments to see if anyone else had mentioned it. I still need to go ahead and post my own comment about it lol.
I discovered Ye Thusa’s sadistic/punitive/vengeful side has a spicy focus. Three pins in the voodoo doll’s crotch, and one in his head.,, Yeeesh!

Nomura likes belts.
Sigh… I miss George Lucas’ Star Wars. At least when it was bad, it was enjoyably bad. The new stuff just reads like a bad fanfiction.
@ TimesNewLogan:
I unironically like Disney Wars, when it’s condensed to just MaRey Sue saying “I am the Force”, waving her hand and making every single baddie of each film explode.
The entirety of the Disney Wars franchise can be condensed into less than thirty seconds and no important plot points are lost.
Compared to Star Wars… Well, if Disney Wars can have 99% of its content cut and not have it affect anything. I’m just going to keep watching/reading/playing Star Wars instead of wasting my time with Disney Wars.
