[1199] The Samurai
└ posted on Thursday, 30 July 2020, by Novil
Unfortunately, there will regularly be weeks with only one update in the coming months. I currently don’t have any material for new strips anymore because I’ve put all my free time into the upcoming Gaia anthology The Complete Gaia. I hope you understand that this book and writing a proper ending for Gaia has topmost priority at the moment.
- Sandra: … and this is my raccoon Woo.
- Hitomi: Awww, he’s soooo kawaiiiiii!
- Hitomi: HIYAAA!
- Sandra: ?
- Hitomi: Ancient samurai technique to tame tanuki spirits.
- Sandra: Teach me your ways, senpai!
Okay, what could possibly stand in the way of the ship at THIS point?
Cloud getting jealous of Sandra spending time learning ancient samurai techniques from someone else? Hitomi proving in a catastrophic way why she isn’t the brightest bulb in the cake?
The only thing I would accept at this point is a family disaster for Hitomi forcing her to Japan (during a temporary reduction in travel restrictions) only to be locked there.
And I would still be miffed.
Kawaiiii! <3
Novil, you lead this arc to this delightful scene and whatever surprises you have in mind, we can rest with the pleasures of this strip until you have time to update. The proper ending of Gaia is indeed in our minds as well. 🙂
So when is the weding richard?
We have been blessed with regular updates for a long time now. Please take the time you need, we will be here! Also, I really like Gaia, so I don’t loose much 🙂
Finally, I would like to add: Lava moat!

Is Woo a tanuki or a raccoon? I know they’re similar, but I didn’t think Woo was Japanese…
I loved Hitomi before, and now it’s even worse. Get crackin’, Richard. Don’t let this one get away.
Tame the daughter? Do it.
But at the moment i have a question what happens with the rival/probably love computer genius geek who Richard fight some time ago?
Lol, Fist of the North Star!
Of course we understand Novil
Of course we do…
All kidding aside, loving this arc and Hitomi!
@ Tony5n:
Umm… meant to add a link with the html tag but didn’t work, let me give it another whirl

Yes, Gaia needs a proper ending. Take your time.
Sensei, Sandra. Sensei.
If she thinks Woo is all kawaii, just wait until she meets his kids! She might faint.
So when’s the wedding?
@ Dracke:
When the lava moat is complete
May I suggest, if you know that it will be “regularly”, that you proactively give yourself a little more breathing room and a chance to build up a buffer again, whilst simultaneously lowering uncertainty and disappointment about missed updates? If you drop to one update a week as a temporary schedule instead of trying to push yourself for two, you can theoretically meet all of these. A big product launch is a big thing, and we wish you the best during this stressful period.
Winning over the daughter and her “pet”, check… 😆
@ All-Purpose Guru:
Woo doesn’t have the balls to be a tanuki.
Loving Hitomi more and more 🙂
Hope you have as much fun working on Gaia as we have reading it … don’t feel bad about putting Sandra and Woo on the back burner … this is your project after all, just being able to read and enjoy your passion is enough for us 🙂
Well Hitomi is already winning over Sandra,so that’s good I guess. Now we just have to wait and see what happens at 8:37PM.
Also thank you for the heads up about there being less strips for the coming months. The only thing that upsets me about it is that we’re a bit closer to having to say goodbye to the characters from Gaia. 🙁
guess I was wrong.
You have worked hard to give us two great comics for years – you have earned a *lot* of tolerance for a temporary slowdown. And congratulations for being able to bring a story to a proper end! That’s not an easy thing.
“you’re already pet”
@ KillerOh:
Well the ship is within the lava moat, so the lava moat would more likely protect the ship rather than keeping the ship out
Writing a proper ending for Gaia is a very good reason for a few updates less. There are way to many stories with bad endings.
Hitomi: You’re already tamed.
Woo: NANI??!?
Disappointed we missed the awkward introduction of Hitomi to Sandra, but glad there seems to be an initial good feeling between them – can it last though?
This technique must’ve originated in Jin Sakai’s technique for taming foxes.
Minor language note: Native English speakers would say, “That is my raccoon” only if the raccoon was at some distance. Across the room, maybe, and they were pointing at it.
If the raccoon were close enough to touch, and they were gesturing to it, we would say, “This is my raccoon”.
Difference Between This and That

Never mind Lily and the kits – there’s the rest of the forest friends, the Williams clan and a certain succubus-in-training to meet and enrapture…

Hitomi and Ye Thuza being old arch enemies, for example.
Just when you thought Hitomi couldn’t get any more kawaii… ;D
@ Sllimkered:
I doubt it was all that awkward. While this is their first time meeting face to face, they’ve already been introduced. That seemed to go pretty well, so I’m not expecting too much drama from that direction. (Standard disclaimer applies: I could be wrong.)
I will miss the regular updates, but I knew from the Gaia strip that it was near completion. I hadn’t thought yet of a collection like you did of Sandra and Woo, but I’d hoped!
Carry on and best of luck!
Woo as spirit animal CONFIRMED
” I hope you understand that ” – no worries Novil. I perosnally do (I’m a Patreon contributor, and will certainly continue), and I’m sure plenty of readers who love this webcomic understand as well! Good luck with the book!
Patience is a virtue, I’m sure Hitomi can confirm that Bushido says that too 🙂

And future senior manager of hell.
This is the 2nd time Sanda say: “Teach me your ways!”

Hang on. She became a waitress after dropping out of…10th grade, was it? That must have been years and years ago, though, right? …Right?

Yes, sensei. ‘Master’.
Senpai is ‘worship’
AnotherBear wrote:
Bur surely Senpai can be used as a respectful form of address, with a meaning close to “mentor” or “guide”?
Just wait for Hitomi discovering Woo speaking and being totally unfazed by it because thats what tanuki spirits do 😛
Failed grade 10 but knows ancient samurai techniques?
Must have been a high school elective.
Ah, Sandra. You call her senpai now but soon you might be calling her Okaa-sama.
@ All-Purpose Guru:
Only in appearance – Tanuki are real animals, strongly resemble raccoons (especially in the face), but are more closely related to dogs.

LOL Hitomi is so “kawaii” in every panel of this one! Well done Powree! You and Novil make a great team!
@ All-Purpose Guru:
They are different animals.
Despite being called Raccoon Dogs, Tanukis are not actually Racoons.
Raccoons are Procyons, Raccoon Dogs are canids (like dogs).
They are both adorable.
AnotherBear wrote:
No, I don’t think that’s right, the honorific suffix -sama is worship.
Senpai is what a young student calls an older student.
A grade 5 would address a grade 6 as senpai, a grade 6 would address a grade 5 as kohai, both would address their teacher as sensei and all three would address a god as kami-sama.
