It depends. Not all houses are built by “the construction company”. For example, I bought the lot on which my house stands from the local municipal government, and hired the company to construct the house, and a supervisor/principal designer to oversee the works myself. I decided, together with the principal designer, the exact location of my house on the lot myself, given that the zoning gave a lot of leeway. The aim of the project was to get a home for my family, not commercial aspirations.
The garden is not just “lazyness”, it follows automatically from the fact that I have a house with 100-square meter footprint on a 1500-square meter lot. Therefore, I need to do something with all the extra space, and gardening is the way to develop it into something beautiful. (And, having part of the lot as a kitchen garden, to also supplement our diet with home-grown potatoes, salad, onions, plums, apples and herbs.)
