- Hitomi: Sandra is very nice girl. But Hitomi is also a little worried.
- Richard: Why?
- Hitomi: All teenagers get into trouble. It’s nature! So parents need to make them behave. And for that…
- Hitomi: … Hitomi may not be authority figure enough!
- Richard: Don’t worry. I’ll take care of it.

Another lovely strip! Hitomi is sweet, Woo’s expression is great and we definite learn something about Richard and his feelings for Hitomi. 🙂
Yeah, Richard as authority figure. Sure. And pigs fly. 😀
Thank you for this kawaiii strip! We will have much fun with Hitomi…
When Gabriel Iglesias’ acquired a stepson, Frankie’s mother expressed some concern about certain conversations, to which Gabriel replied “don’t worry, I’m the man, I’ll take care of it”. When Frankie tried to initiate a conversation Gabriel was uncomfortable with, he tried to pass it off to his wife, who promptly turned his own words back on him.
Just food for thought.

Richiards been a solo dad for years and Sandra is an above average well behaved girl for her age. Which means he knows how to be authority figure for her.
I’t cloud dad that I would see having issues filling that role, not Richard
@ Marteri:
I think we learn more about Hitomi’s feelings for Richard – she’s implying that she’s going to be Sandra’s parent, isn’t she?
When Richard and Hitomi are talking or, ummm, “doing other things” they assume they’re alone and ignore the “dumb animal” in the corner of the room.
This conversation about “authority”, for example, is sure to get back to Sandra. Of course, she has to be careful not to let them know she knows. Too much risk of spilling Woo’s secret.
On the other hand, Hitomi, steeped in anime culture where intelligent animals are a commonplace, may figure it out on her own.
Yea I can imagine that. Hitomi saying “Go to your room” or “You’re grounded” while wearing a cosplay costume.
I don’t follow the comments regularly – has it been established what
Hitomi’s age is? I get the strong feeling Richard’s robbing the cradle here…

I think a simple “no shit sherlock” will suffice.

I would be skeptical of Woo carrying absolutely everything he hears back to Sandra for appraisal. In fact I think most of what he does, generally doesn’t unless it naturally arises in conversation, or Woo has a grounded enough concern.
And woo is somewhat considered an adult, at least in the animal world, and perhaps sympathizes with the adults in the room.
David C wrote:
Indeed so, and from what we see here, it comes as on surprise for Richard either.
I’m used to fiction relationships moving fast, but DAMN. We haven’t even had them kiss yet and she’s basically considering herself Sandra’s new Mom.
I don’t think she needs to worry. As long as Sandra trusts her, she’ll be ok and if Sandra dosn’t trust her, even the most respectable person would have trouble to be seen as an autority figure. I think she does a great job in connencting with Sandra.
I’m sorry, but has Sandra done anything wrong, yet? 🤨 I must be missing something… 🤔

Doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.
I think Hitomi should worry first if Sandra is going to accept her as a new mom before worrying if she can be enough of an authority figure. Generally when children are already in their teens when their dad gets a new girlfriend/wife, they will view the new parent not as a parent, but as “my dad’s girlfriend”. As such she should always stay away from the negative aspects of parenting (correction, asserting authority) and focus on the positive aspects (coaching, advice). As a teenager, Sandra is more likely to accept an older sister type relationship than one based on a position of authority.
In anime terms, Sandra is more likely to view Hitomi as Onee-chan than as Okasan. Considering how young Hitomi behaves this type of relationship should develop automatically. Would be nice to see how Hitomi and Richard react if Sandra starts treating Hitomi as such.
@ Carefulrogue:
I didn’t mean to imply Woo would report back everything! He can be discreet. But animal knowledge of human culture is “iffy”.
The forest creatures were incensed a wildlife photographer posted images of them mating. Considered it pornography and “invasion of privacy”.
On the other hand, Lily prayed to Seeoahtlahmakaskay that Sandra would have many litters.
A conversation about Sandra would probably be considered gossip worth passing on.
SAGG wrote:
Well she has committed multiple acts of Unlawful Entry, but you she doesn’t need to be in trouble for the adults in her life to talk so they are the same page of expectations so they agreement on what they should do when it happens. and it is the nature of all children not just teens to misbehave on occasion
Actually middle school years is actually a local peak misbehavior period in a child life, because like the toddler “terrible twos” it a transition period where they’re sorting out new expectations.
Can I heart this post? I wanna heart this post! I cannot heart this post enough.
<3
woo looks huge on that panel
There’s always the fun parent and the responsible one. Didn’t take this page to tell me which one Hitomi was
Hitomi enough of authority figure to threaten Richard with torture if he’s caught with another woman.
Hitomi need to use same tone with teenager and threaten with what teenager would consider torture, like taking away smartphone.
@ PS2kid:
By the power of the Moon, you’re grounded! That I could see. Or she could just pull out Excalibolg, and Sandra would fall in line.
Aha!! I knew it!
Hitomi is starting to make Sandra’s life hell.
Woo is doing a great job helping in the garden, I see.

I married an Asian woman. I’m in my 30’s as is she. My mother in law lives with us, and so does my late 20’s sister in law.
Sister in law was occasionally questioned and had to show ID to cops so she didn’t have to get back in school.
Welcome to Asian life in America! I feel for Richard even though he is a figment of imagination here reading the comments lol. Guess I am really just feeling for Novil; he creates logical scenarios and people start crying “cradle robber!!”
Hitomi can be more something as a sister for Sandra.
Younger Sister. 😛
@ Roguebfl:
There’s also a certain difference in culture to consider. For adults in Japan that don’t have ‘serious’ jobs (that is, part of the corporate stepladder), it’s common for parents to continue to provide shelter for a long time, with the family pooling resources as opposed to splintering.
At least, that’s how it is according to a Wikipedia dive I did on the subject of ‘part-timers in Japan’ a while back.
Not enough people are commenting on the cute raccoon! There is a cute raccoon being played with, we should all be paying attention to that!

Good pull, my friend! Good pull.
@ Roguebfl:
I think until Sandra does something wrong, it’s not Hitomi’s call to do anything until Sandra’s dad takes the lead–just like the strip shows. Want to create tension and an enemy? Try punishing your possible step daughter… 😑
SAGG wrote:
True, punishment should be left to Dad, but she will have the power of “wait till your dad gets home too. But punishment isn’t all there is to being an authority figure. an authority figure is just someone who mush be observed on pain of punishment, but they are also people who should listen because the are authorities on how to act in a situation to get the positive outcomes too. Authority Figures are official role models not just the defacos ones. one you can go to for advice.
@ KFish:
Same here: In her 30’s I’d go through the supermarket checkout with a bottle of wine, and if my wife was along they’d card her, not me, to make sure I wasn’t buying a teen some booze. I had people asking me if she was adopted.
Now she’s hit the big 4-0, and it’s not happening quite so often, but she certainly doesn’t look her age.
Stephen wrote:
I know, right? Although, to be honest getting so many of these new characters that we know next anything about is kinda tiring. But it’s so cute. I wonder what its name is. I wonder if it’ll like this Sandra girl we hear Richard having. 😀
@ Lumino:
From what I have learned about Japanese culture, girls act fast once they have decided they are interested in somebody.
It’s interesting how this is being played. I’ve been assuming that the catastrophe predicted from Sandra’s dream was that she would suddenly have a stepmother who’s somewhere in the ballpark of ten years older than her, when we’ve seen that she still grieves for her deceased biological mother.
Despite Hitomi being so silly, this is actually pretty relatable. (Also partly because Hitomi is so silly – she’s going to be the epitome of an embarrassing stepmother.)
There is another wrinkle in Hitiomi acting as an authority figure for Sandra, name Hitiomi out look on proper behavior is based on Japan’s Shame base cultrue were and Sandra is use to Amercia’s Guilt based culture
consider how the two cultures have differing views on Improper behavior that none knows about and being innocent of of improper behavior thinks you did.

I’m sure there are cosplay costumes working quite well for “You’re grounded”. Not this one, of course …
@ RL:
I mean, does Sandra even know Hitomi and Richard are in a relationship yet? It doesn’t seem as if she was around during any scene where someone said something about it.
How old is hitomi again? I assume she’s in her 20s.
@ David C:
She came a long way, during difficult times to do something which will likely result ian that.
Based on personal, but not direct, experience… It’s not her appearance nor her demeanor which will be the biggest issue, it’s her age – or rather the lack thereof.
I know a widower who’s second marriage was to a woman basically a generation younger. The oldest was reasonably ok with it (even if he was only about a year younger than her). The daughter (who was about 6 years younger than Dad’s new wife) was the one who had…MANY issues. It wasn’t just “She’s not Mom” or even “She’s not my Mom”. It was “She’s barely older than my brother” – simply: she was too close to her own age for the daughter to be willing to accept as an authority figure. The problems got worse when the twins came along… I think it was how the Stepmom treated the daughter’s kids that finally fixed all the issues – about 15 years later.
So the cosplay chick wants to marry the cuck?
I swear, Vince Russo on PCP makes more sense than this tripe.
@ Lumino:
These strips are brief glimpses of the characters lasting seconds. We have no idea what’s happening “off-camera”. It’s more likely that Richard and Hitomi became intimate while still in Japan (which makes her following him to another continent in the middle of a global pandemic much more believable).
Novil is a nonce wrote:
Hitomi is Japanese she never considered that “cuck” would be negative, derogatory or even an insult. If she had, she never would have said any of it in the first place.
She never meant to insult him and probably never realized that she did.
