For a moment she Pat seemed really curios there, if not to say happy about what might be a connection. Then less so.

The name contains a typo, her name correctly: “Monika Szeles”. That attack was horrible, she had long-term aftermath and a broken career because of that attack.

Wow, Novil showing his age with these names… That event happened 28 years ago.
For people to feel better: Monica Seles was not in fact gravely injured, and she played many years more, did well in grand slam tournaments, won one of them, until a foot injury forced her to retire ten years later.
Angry headbumps? This seems like the start of a love/hate romance…

It is indeed “umpire,” although since no one, strangely, has pointed this out yet: Novil, the English word you’re looking for here is “referee.” The term “umpire” is used only in baseball.
That aside, I love the last panel so much. What could’ve come across as an uncomfortably dark punchline, if delivered on its own, instead turns out hilarious thanks to Zoey’s over-the-top “look at me, I’m a knife” head-butting.

In tennis it is indeed umpire. Basically they are just there to make sure foot faults and bad behavior actually have punishments. Yes, headbutting your opponent is bad behavior. As is swearing or taking too long to serve or breaking a bunch of rackets. Hitting any official with the ball aside from during play is an immediate match loss.

Hey, I just noticed that Pat Smash’s dress looks like a Starfleet uniform from Star Trek. Rotate the triangular crest on her left shoulder clockwise and you’ll see what I mean.
Is this a deliberate reference?
