Sandra and Woo Review by Game Land
There’s a review of Sandra and Woo on page 98 of the Russian game magazine Game Land 06/2010:
Our reader Rinta, who is a native Russian speaker, was so friendly to provide the following translation of the article. Thank you (and also to Ben, who translated the first part as well.)
When I asked Oliver Knoerzer whether it’s true that in Germany it’s forbidden to depict violence and other dark sides of the real life, he commented that if there’s some sexually explict materials on the site – then it should be protected from the access of underages. It seems that no other measures are taken. The most interesting thing is – that one of the latest strips of Sandra and Woo contains some specific erotic scenes. Although as “it” is done by animals – German censorship hasn’t yet closed the “delinquent” site. The furry porn lover was actually Woo, a spring-horny racoon. But the real victim of his actions was his owner, a girl named Sandra, because he used her YouTube account to watch these videos (by the way, the account actually exists).
However you can’t tell that this is a common plot twist for Sandra and Woo. Knoerzer tells us a lot of different stories with no typical line in them. His web-comics strips drawn by Indonesian artist Powree can sometimes be like “Nemi” – when social and political issues are touched. The other times they can be like “Peanuts” – when the adventures of Sandra and her friends – Larisa and Cloud – are the main subject. Or like “Over the hedge” – when Woo gets out to the forest and interacts with his own friends – Fox and Squirrel. Oliver doesn’t hold himself from giving a direct references to some well-known stories of other writers, but you’ll never tell that his comics is an afterproduct. If you already have some experience in comics world – you’ll like Sandra and Woo even more because of these little links.
I’m not sure why half of the article focuses on giving a heavily simplified overview of German youth protection laws. Showing two mating raccoons should be a complete non-issue in practically any country of the world.
W hen I asked Olive Dr. Knertsera, is it true that Germany banned the iso – brazhat violence and Chernuhi, He clarified that if the sai – they have materials with sexual content, it must be protected from viewing ma – loletnimi. Others were censorship as if no. The most interesting is that one latest releases Sandra and Woo is just contains a peculiar erotic scenes, however, because “it would” make the animals, a German kaya censorship still not covered “prov – nivshiysya “site. Amateur zoopornushki eye – zalsya raccoon Wu, who leaped hormones, and suffered from this reputation of his mistress, girl, Sandra, as he watched from YouTube her account (by the way, really exist). However, we can not say it – the character – HYDRATED for Sandra and Woo plot. Knertser Ras predicts a variety of stories, among co – configuration of several difficult to choose typical. Issues to vebkomiksa drawn Indonesian artist Pauri, like that of Nemi – coh – Yes affect the social and political problem, then the Peanuts – when the consecration HN adventures of Sandra and her friends, Larry vide Cloud, then on the Over the Hedge – when Wu chosen in the woods and talks already with friends, fox and squirrel. Oliver boit – Xia make direct references to the classics, one – to his stories in pictures can not be called M To secondary – if you’re already no stranger to
This is what google translate did. Grammar is horribly mangled, but from what I can discern, its about what is considered appropriate when it comes to displaying sexual themes in a webcomic. I think. Someone else can probably translate it better.
Gotta love Google Translate. Endless amounts of wacky, wacky fun.
BTW, it makes it translate better when you remove the dashes and such.
When someone I asked Oliver Knertsera whether it is true that Germany is forbidden to depict violence and Chernukha, he said that if the site is a material with sexual content, it should be protected from viewing young. Others same censorship as if there. The most interesting that one of the most recent editions of Sandra and Woo just contains the original erotic scenes, however, because “it would” make the animals, the German censorship has not closed the “guilty” site. Amateur zoopornushki was raccoon Wu, who leaped hormones, but has suffered from this reputation of his mistress, the store, and will be behind bars – an excellent opportunity to tell readers about the Cologne Zoo! Life Ain’t No Pony Farm sometimes crazy, sometimes regard to sensitive topics, but do without pohabstva. At the amusement of the audience Sarah exposes itself formless loser, but we believe – the best she has yet to come. girl, Sandra, as he watched YouTube CEE account (incidentally, really exists). However, we can not say it – typical for Sandra and Woo plot. Knertser tells various stories, among which it is difficult to choose typical. Issues to vebkomiksa drawn Indonesian artist Pauri, similar to that of Nemi – which affect the social and political problems, then the Peanuts – which are devoted to adventure, Sandra and her friends, Larissa and Claudia, at the Over the Hedge – when Wu is selected in the forest and the communicating already with his friends, fox and squirrel. Oliver is not afraid to make direct references to the classics, but his stories in pictures can not be called M to secondary – if you’re not a novice in the world of comics, Sandra and Woo
Wow… I’m honestly not sure if that’s supposed to be good, bad, or what. Thanks, Google!
It helps to copy one column at a time, Otto. Copy-paste doesn’t work directly, for some reason. Here’s my shot; it’s not perfect, but is more legible:
“When I asked Oliver Knörzer whether it is true that Germany is forbidden to depict violence and Chernukha, he said that if the site is a material with sexual content, it should be protected from young viewers. No, wait. It’s MY copy-paste not working. Urg. Otto’s is actually pretty good after all.
Haha, wut? “Guilty” site? I’m quite sure the German police won’t shut down our site for displaying naughty raccoon porn ;).
The irony would be massive if you got an order to close the site now.
Okay, on the left side we’ve got “Information”:

When I asked Oliver Knoerzer whether it is true that it is forbidden in Germany to depict violence and , he made it clear that if a site contains sexually explicit material, it has to be inaccessible to underage surfers. No further measures of censorship exist. It is most interesting that one of the last Sandra and Woo strips does contain erotic scenes of sorts itself. As “it” is done by animals, German censorship has not yet closed down the site.

Sorry, no more time for the rest now.

Oops, a few things got lost:
When I asked Oliver Knoerzer whether it is true that it is forbidden in Germany to depict violence and [no idea how to translate this second word, seems to be the explicit realistic or exaggerated depiction of sex, violence…], he made it clear that if a site contains sexually explicit material, it has to be inaccessible to underage surfers. No further measures of censorship exist. It is most interesting that one of the last Sandra and Woo strips does contain erotic scenes of sorts itself. As “it” is done by animals, German censorship has not yet closed down the [guilty?] site.

[EDIT BY NOVIL: MERGE OF MULTIPLE POST]
Having finally found all of the comics included with the article (the “Democracy” one was the hardest), I have to wonder… What’s Sid been up to? We haven’t seen him in just over eight months.
@ Ben: Thank you for your effort, looking forward for the translation of the rest.
He will be back in strip # 151. It’s hard to come up with good ideas for him and Shadow, though…
Bah… Care for a native russian speaker? (not english though) At least I will make it a bit more human-readable than Google 🙂
In couple of places I ignored the exact translation and used what I felt is better for understanding.
This story on Sandra and Woo confuses me…
I think, in translation, we’re losing a lot of the tone. I think it’s mostly complimenting the strip’s equal amount of convention and audacity, as well as the fact that it’s capable of many different storylines and perspective without coming across as schizophrenic or discordant.
With all the confusion about why the article is so much about child protection and so on – I’ll also translate the header of the page. It may explain something…
“I admit that lately this column was mostly dedicated to angry and cynical pieces, and not so well-drawn also. So this time I decided to write about some cute comics strips with talking animals in them. And of course I turned to German comics writers, because in Germany there are even some laws which are forbidding to stuff the youngs with any kind of dirt”
I’m guessing that “However you can’t tell that this is a common plot twist for Sandra and Woo.” would be more correctly interpreted as “However nobody can say this is a common plot twist for Sandra and Woo.” The first version is, I guess, a more accurate translation but I’m also guessing that the second version is a better interpretation and more accurately expresses the meaning of the sentence.
Can anyone confirm my interpretation?
And I believe that censoring ‘coon sex, or any animal sex, is the height of prudish stupidity.
“Showing two mating raccoons should be a complete non-issue in practically any country of the world.” …Except Austrailia: they are calling for the owner of Encyclopedia Dramatica to be extradited to face jailtime in Australia for breaking Australian laws banning freedom of speech because one of the articles his site hosts is about Aborigines, and like the articles they have for every ethnicity, (including Caucasians) it’s racist and vulgar. (and yes, I know this is regulated in Germany aswell after WW2)
In any case though, you remind me a bit of DC Simpson: you have a tendency to either oversimplify or overportray, but without much detraction from actual entertainment value. (otherwise, this wouldn’t be one of the few comics I actually read) DC Simpson has gotten a little too far out there (not referring to the comic which Blitzkrieg draws) for me lately though…
The second thing has absolutely NOTHING to do with the first. Please don’t use completely illogical arguments to make your point.
Sorry for being late to the discussion, but the first half saying that the site is “delinquent” was certainly a joke – I think it’s okay to show what was shown in this episode of the comic, and just pointed it out as one of the zany things that happen there. Maybe the humour was lost in translation, maybe the joke wasn’t that good in the first place, but I certainly didn’t want to proclaim Sandra and Woo as a furry porn lover’s delight, and I apologise if it sounded like that. I think BobisOnlyBob’s view of the article is more close to what I wanted to convey.
