The current story arc started with this strip: The Dark Knight.
Neither Powree nor my mother got the joke in the first draft of the strip’s script. So I rewrote the dialog and just hope that it’s reasonably comprehensible now.
- Sandra: Our house is not burglarproof, Daddy.
- Richard: No?
- Sandra: No. After you left yesterday, Cloud suddenly stood in our living room. He scared me to death.
- Richard: I believe it. But I’m afraid that even the best lock is of no use against a true ninja… ………
- Sandra: Yeah, Cloud is really a ninja, but aren’t you a bit too relaxed about it nonetheless…?
- Richard: … ……… to whom I gave a key.

LOOOOOOL! Me like ^^
Poor Sandra it’s as if her dad and Cloud are against her 😛
I don’t get it…
ChaoStar, you would need to have seen the latest Batman film to get it. This whole storyline has made reference after reference to it.
I saw the movie and still don’t get it. Are Sandra’s dad and Cloud just screwing with her?
Daddy is pretending to be Two-Face.
(Uhhh… spoiler for the recent batman movie ahead, i guess)
Hehehe… of course, ANYONE can be a ninja when you give them the key to your place! It’s too bad Sandra didn’t stick around to see the other half of his face… Now the question is, is that a face mask, make up, or is that just us SEEING him as two-face to show that he was the one who pretty much did the second half of the set up (you know, kinda like how, if someone in the comic were to look at him, he’d be all normal, but we see him as two-face…)
Good comic none the less. For those who don’t get it, Cloud had help setting up the previous scare because Sandra’s DAD gave him the key to the house… of course, he’s not going to tell HER that (while she’s in earshot at least)… It’s kind of a “two-faced” move, I think…
: )
ooo…
ya know, you drew that guy REALLY well, captured the freakynes really well.
…and is there anyone on Sandra’s side?
(or Woo’s. I <3 Woo…)
My guess would be Daddy found out about Sandra’s plan to watch the Bad Scary Movie instead of Kung Fu Panda, so he set up a little prank to teach her not to do such things.
Looks like Sandra’s well on her way to learning one of life’s important lessons: NEVER TRUST ANYONE!!!
How could anyone not get the joke? They both knew she was NOT going to watch Kung Fu Panda! Hahah. Guess its another wetting for her.
Alllll right, NOW things are going to get interesting.
Heh. I’m so lost when it comes to references here – haven’t seen the movie, and never read much Batman, so my best guess was that her father was the Terminator, and I was trying to figure out why we’re suddenly referencing that.
XD ahaa, this one was pretty good!! The joke’s really nice too :3 I guess I too should become that kind of ninja *tho I have no keys U_U*
This strip is going to end up like Cold Comfort Farm, where everyone either thinks it’s weird but funny or just plain weird because nobody gets the references.
Never was a fan of Two-Face, so I didn’t get the reference at first. It took a while of thinking, and my best guess was evil robot. Meh, the ninja reference makes up for it.
“two-faced” meaning “treacherous” as in “tricking your daughter into getting scared by her friend” is a pretty common term so you should be able to get it even without seeing the movie. kids these days.
I didn’t like Dark Knight, but I have enjoyed this story arch. That is precisely the crap I would do to children, should they ever be cursed with me as a parent.
Also, the way Richard’s dialog is broken up might be slowing people down. It took a minute for me to really connect what he was saying in panel 2 and 3, which diminished the impact. Still liked it, mind you.
He needs to be flipping a two-headed coin (with one side defaced) to complete the effect.
Cloud has mad key-using skillage.
Oh, and what the fuzz is up with that guy’s face?
One hell of a make up job if that’s what that is.
I too did not get the punchline until I read these comments. Then again, there were many of Gary Larson’s “Far Side” cartoons that never made sense though others thought them so funny. And I loved his cartoons.
I think what made this one so confusing wasn’t the dialog, but you had to think for a moment and realize that Cloud had not been a guest at the time of the movie. Before you cold start to get the context of this strip.
Oh…so THAT’S what would happen if Harvey Dent and Pizza, The Hut had a love child…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-Face – Harvey Dent, who ranked as one of the most tragic episodes in Bruce Wayne’s life, being topped by The Joker’s act of offing his parents.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spaceballs – A two minute, two bit character that is about as Sci-Fi notioned as characters can get.
My last laptop developed a problem like that. Truly annoying, how it just kept repeating the same key a million times, over.
Luckily, computers are becoming ever cheaper, all the time. Let me list…
1’st laptop. $8,000+. (I didn’t buy it new, when it was that price, though.)
2’nd laptop. $1,000+ (That’s the one that developed the hardware failure in the keyboard.)
3’rd laptop. $289. (At least, I think it came out to that, after the discounts. And, the one this post was typed upon, too.)
4’th laptop. $2. (No joke. Duel core processor. Vista Premium. Very sweet machine.)
i’m just hoping to drag mine out so it manages the equivalent of <$250 a year…
(about $1000 when bought ($1500 at proper exchange rates, but we always seem to pay more than the states so I’ve revised that down) in early ’06… though the hard disc and memory upgrade and replacement battery have piled a bit more on top!
quality piece of kit though, so it’s worth it. Only 12″ and single core 1.73Ghz, but perfectly portable and as it’s a “real” mobile pentium (not e.g. a celeron) still quicker than the netbooks that everyone seems to think I should replace it with. and the battery life is still longer than a new one of those.
…. they are only $150 now though 😀
(Strangely enough my laptops seem to have got MORE expensive – first one I swapped for a beer and a pirate copy of something or other (it _was_ a B/W 486SX, in 2002, though… slow as anything but still somehow ran Word v6, and was quasi portable once I hacked some generic NiCad rechargable C-cells into its dead battery pack… still have the core circuit board somewhere after everything else blew up),
second one was ~$60 (P120, 2004… a solid performer for MSO97/Win95 and old DOS games, but most of the value was it had sat on a desk all its life, so the NiMh battery was like-nearly-new) – with this exponential rise I think I should expect the next one to cost about $20,000 and be able to outpower the combined forces of the present-day internet :D)
Buuuuuuuuuuut after all that… all I want to know is….
what was the original joke?
I didn’t notice Richard’s face until after I read this strip again. Sandra vs. Richard and Cloud. Who will win in the end???
Poor Sandra, she’s officially old enough for her Dad to get a kick out of scaring the kaka out of her. She’ll never be safe again.
I love how Google Ads has ‘Brave and the Bold’ promoted 🙂
I would have liked to see Sandra’s reaction to Begins with Scarecrow.
“Mister, I don’t think I like your attitude.”
Is everyone conspiring to freak out Sandra?
•Sandra: “A friend told me it has…
•Sandra: … an intense, dark atmosphere…
•Sandra: … and surprising plot twists.”
That friend is probably Cloud, folks. It was all part of the plan.
Outstanding items permanently, you merely earned a brand new viewer. What may possibly a person advise regarding distribute you produced 7 days in past times? Virtually any convinced?
This is such a win. Prepare to pee your pants Sandra…Then again, prepare to see another Sandra with a katana, Sandra’s dad.
@ Adam C.:
Sir, it was TWO-FACE that he was masquerading as.
Does her dad look psychotic to anyone else?
Maybe he wants his daughter to be protected? *Shrug*
@ ChaoStar:
half face and joker, two allies against batman.
I Believe In Richard North.
