They were laughing when Donald Trump promised…
… to make anime real.
So, who’s laughing now?! Checkmate, liberals!
I don’t understand why they made the ad so depressing. I think that it’s a neat concept which should not only appeal to workaholics/otaku/hikikomori without a social life if done right. It should be more like a virtual friend instead of a wife replacement. And there need to be mods to load the appearance and the personality of your favorite characters.
I’d get a virtual Kurisu Makise with whom I could talk about quantum physics in a heartbeat. Of course I’d have to make sure that she doesn’t see my computer monitor or she’d call me a “pervert” all the time. *g*
Cool tech, but my GOD what a creepy ad.
I’m kinda uncomfortable with even joking support for Trump. “This administration could literally end up killing me or many of my friends” kinda makes gag support stop being funny, from my perspective.
No, I’m not suggesting literal death camps. Just… between the emboldening of bigots and hate groups, the likelihood of policies that will protect discrimination against various groups or are even actively discriminatory — he actively suggested discriminatory policies regarding Muslims, and agreed to sign FADA — and the likely massive cuts to disability benefits, health care, etc. this is a dangerous time to be alive and in the US for plenty of people. (And that’s before we get into other alarming aspects of his campaign or government)
The background image on http://steins-gate.wikia.com/wiki/Kurisu_Makise looks a lot like Lili. Was Kurisu an inspiration for her?
The Awesomeness of the add inversely porportional to how good trailer, the trailer is bad, like there is not word to describe yet, as a matter of fact the trailer is given to provide a negative image, heck its like saying every woman who reads twillight or i dunno, 60 shades of black and ughhh, yaoi (was it?) is fat, lonely loser who are better dead, does this gear only need to appeal to otaku and hikkimori? heck otaku and hikkimori is something people should not want to be, weebs have manage to romanticise it some how.
Hmm. Seeing / reading that last few seconds about “someone to come home to” … A real electronic companion should hearing this should automatically put him up on dating sites for this …

Sometimes you make fun of things that are just to hard to bear otherwise.
As for Trump … he still on my “could be worse” list. We don’t know anything about what he’ll really stand for once he’s really in charge. At least it looks like this from over here in Europe.
You hear about a one-liner from him with almost sounds rational on one day. And then an outright crazy action on the next.
I totally saw this coming but to the people that say that it shouldn’t be a wife , remember that Wife 2.0 is not compatible with girlfriend 2.0
What a creepy product … at least to the extent people falsely bond with it. It isn’t a real relationship … but it could easily prevent the creation of a real one or warp one. Like pornography, it’s selling an attractive lie.
The thought I had watching this was ‘Ugh, this is the same reason my father always wants to have a pet dog…’ I think that defeats all the arguments against it for me. Better that someone bonds with an anime character than a pet that is actually extremely miserable the whole time they’re out of the house at work and is going to get sick, die, and be replaced again and again. The way people cope with loneliness historically is creepier than the future is going to be, I think…
Anyway, I think that’s why I don’t find this ad depressing, it’s too easy to imagine something I already know that’s much worse in comparison.
I actually find this rather disappointing, at least from the moment they show it from the side. Why is the image flat? It’s a 3D model, inside a glass tube. They’ve made a fully 3D holographic Miku already. So why is the rendering on this one so flat?
Honestly, AI isn’t advanced enough for something like this to really be interesting. It’s little more than a VN in a console that looks like a coffee maker. They could have made a chatbot, but those haven’t made any decent progress in a long while. And we all remember how silly they can get. Maybe if Google are done with AlphaGo, they can tackle human interaction again.
It really is an interesting piece of tech.. but the ad was terrible. Made it out to be something for desperate losers who are starved for companionship. Left me with the impression of “I’m not nearly lonely or desperate enough to need something like this in my life. …Yet.”
@ Honzinator:
The market is to salarymen who work for twelve or fourteen hours a day, and then commute for two, often six days a week. They don’t have time for real relationships, except by phone and text.
Look at the short film. The young man wakes up early, works until after it is dark and then has a long commute by bus home. Before the GateBox, he got home to an empty house and went to bed. Now he has a reason to look forward to getting home.
You can dislike the pressure-cooker environment of salarymen, but they are not going away anytime soon. There are some married salarymen, and their wives and kids often live elsewhere, while they live in a shitty bedsit for five nights a week, to make the commute shorter (because real-estate close to the business district is unaffordable). Do you think that arrangement would be preferable? I mean, it is a real relationship, after all.
To those familiar with the culture of the salaryman and the need for friendship, this ad is actually quite touching. But in all seriousness, when can I get one voiced by Paul Bettany? I need my own personal Jarvis soooo badly.
It’s cute, but she doesn’t cook or clean for him. I know how people like coming home from work, to a home cooked meal.
It’s still useful– I can see this tech being used for other purposes, and for different types/situations.
Trump is going to Make Anime Real Again. Than we Make America Great Again. 2 days left till he ascends into god hood
It’s amusing how dull this ad really is. I think Japanese culture is some what different than ours in many ways, but I think it was done to amplify the difference between the thing being sold as something actually positive to the life to the person buying it. As in, his life is severely dull, and he needs this to stay sane. The question becomes, are the lives of young Japanese people, that so painfully dull that they are on the verge of fading into the gray of their world? IF that is the case, then this is more commentary about Japanese culture than an ad to sell a cool thing.
As for making Trump jokes, I am all for mocking him. That is the only way WE can stay sane in this increasingly ridiculous world. If any one gives you any sort of flack for making fun of the president, remind them, “Donald trump is the president, your argument is invalid”.
