Uhm… what?

Damn sad day indeed, that studio made many great anime. They lost so many people to one madman.
I’m truely shocked. Why would anyone do something like that? How can a fire in an office building kill so many people?

Apparently the perp was a yuri (girl-girl) fan and was angry that KyoAni had given his waifu a boyfriend instead of a girlfriend in the latest Sound Euphonium movie. Big thread on 4chan about it.
@ Turrosh Mak:
Don’t get too fooled by early “news”, actual news reported that he was muttering about them “stealing his book”, but that is early news too and might be wrong as well. Another early rumour is that he was mentally ill, which will always be at least close to the truth when someone does stuff like this.
My point is, don’t look so much at the perpetrator and focus more on the victims, I’m sure more details will come out over time.

From what I heard (can still be wrong, but from news) he threw in two large containers (bucket sized, possibly actual buckets) of petrol into the entrance and set it on fire, that’s a lot of explosive fire. Heat and smoke rises so anyone higher up would have to move quickly to a proper fire escape. Again from the news, it seems many of those who died tried to exit onto the roof only to find that the roof access door was locked, if that is true then they were basically in the worst position considering the rising smoke…
There’s a lot of unknown details, like was the fire escape reachable, fire alarm active, was there sprinklers. But none of that really matters, that’s just distractions from the truth.
The important thing is that a lot of innocent people lost their lives in a senseless act of violence.
My thoughts go out to the survivors and the families of everyone affected.
@ Sylfa:
I just read the BBC article on this. Apparently there were no sprinklers in the building, which unfortunately was in keeping with Japanese fire code for that type of building. Additionally, part of what killed all those people in the stairwell, in addition to the locking of the roof access door, was that the stairs they were using were in a spiral pattern, which would have led to the space becoming like a chimney.
All that said, however, my heart and mind goes out to the survivors of the fire and the survivors of those that died. I also hope they put the man who did this in a very cold and dark prison for the rest of his miserable existence, as execution would be FAR to kind a fate for one such as him.
Death penalty is a thing in Japan, iirc. The guy will most likely be hanged, in a few years. I’ve read Amnesty International reports that inmates spend a long time in the death row, only to be sent to their death in a haste with little to no time to appeal or to at least warn their relatives.
@ Bookwyrm:
They don’t notify the prisoner or their family ahead of time. The prisoner finds out the morning of their execution, usually only an hour ahead of it. Their family is told after the prisoner is already dead. There’s been a lot of criticism from the international community that this amounts of torture, since death row inmates wake up every day not knowing if they’ll be killed that day or not.
Japan’s prisons are also awful in general. Even minor violations of the rules, which are quite strict, can earn some pretty severe punishments. Japan buys into the “prison is for punishment” mindset even more than the US does.
