Wandless spells are mentioned in the books. It seems to be more difficult but still possible. Somewhere it was mentioned that at some other schools they actually prefer to learn wandless spells. Honestly quite a few things in the HP universe just don’t make sense and I don’t think Rowling particularly cared about making a cohesive world as much as telling a specific story.
I sure would hate to be a wizard locked up in this prison. Absolutely no windows, not even slits in the walls.
Of course, somebody appear to be working on fixing that. 🙂
