I was thinking: What makes Viviana different? Why isn’t she wherever the others are? And the thought occurred to me: What if she still has that “Melissa’s Crystal Grid” on her that Lilith cast so that she wouldn’t have to wear armor? If that is still active, then that might explain why she didn’t feel that cold wind, and why whatever it was affected them and not her.
@ Zitchas:
Warning : big spoilers ahead.
Vivi is not the only one to have the crystal grid armor. At some point way later, another day, we see her and Elias losing their magical shields. It makes sense that Lilith gave everybody the same set of magical armor.
Vivi is special. She has been conceived with the same “magical seed” from the Great Tree as Lilith and San, even if this was not expected by Eldor. She is not a wizard, we never see her using magic (except with the Avaril, but this is known to be very easy), but her special “birth” makes her kind of partially immune. Or at least immune to some “sensations” of magic. Or something like that.
That might explain why she was accidentally separated from the others here.
Later on, way later, there is another episode where she has trouble getting through a magical door when everybody can easily do that. That might be linked.
But there is no explicit info on the subject through the whole comic, maybe at some point Novil planned to add some, and finally didn’t ?
@ Sekhmet:
Hmmm, yes, that makes sense. If Vivi needs to wear armor, the rest would too. And since armor is not super evident in the party as they travel, then it suggests they all have magic shields. Handy, having a specialist in shields around…
That being said, Viviana does demonstrate doing some magic in https://www.sandraandwoo.com/gaia/2023/09/01/the-tower-in-the-sky-011/ . Granted, it’s fairly small illusion magic, not something that provokes awe from its complexity. So either it’s easy magic to do, or the Shadowdancers are so used to it that they don’t react to it. In any case, though, she is using magic. Likewise, she seems very adept at whatever magic is required to setup a golem to use a wide range of spellgems. I don’t know about this world, but in Pathfinder and D&D and similar systems generally people who can use magic can use those sorts of things better than those who can’t. So to me that also reinforces the idea that she can do some magic; albeit almost certainly to a much lesser extent. Perhaps to a similar level as what the rest of Lilith’s friends can do. We know they *can* from the Academy, but we generally don’t see any of them do much, since they tend to resort to other skills first.
