I know, that’s not what’s happening, but it still feels kinda weird they are being given weapons after what was said on page 3.
Lets look at it from those solders perspective, you find 2 of the people that were of a group that suddenly disappeared, right after which the creature attacks started. Knowing the dangers they were going to travel through, making sure they survive for questioning is kind of a big deal, so giving them weapons that are known to be effective so they can survive to be questioned makes sense. Plus Ryn did ask to see the King before they were told they were going to be taken to him anyway.

It only makes sense if they understand that despite them not answering the questions truthfully (to the point they accused them of making fun of them) they are not going to turn those weapons against them.
