To me, the director is playing along with them in this, allowing them to take the sword while he will not be implicated in the theft. He suggested going home along the way, and Sandor was already there, waiting for him. And his expression says he’s not all that upset about the boys taking the sword.
To be fair, the curator probably thinks that he isn’t going to get the sword back.
