@ Vicious Sand:
In The Way Back Home, it’s mentioned that San was “killed in Aracona” so, presumably, her doppelganger didn’t perform as expected (or did, it’s Eldor so who knows).

I agree, I was expecting Novil to put something explaining what was this clone (is it a golem? an illusion? an evil twin?) and yet nothing.
I seem to remember I always thought she was a spy, and yet the spy stayed until the end? I don’t remember them doing anything against her…
See, what’s amusing to me here is that Eldor killing San’s friend was explained immediately after it happened because Kali asked about it. He killed her for the same reason he committed the Red Hall Massacre; to raise the stakes of her magical growth. San would need to become stronger to pursue her friend’s killer (Eldor explicitly frames his own cult for this purpose, branding her friend’s forehead with the mark of said cult). San is influenced heavily by her own sense of righteousness (being Gaia’s chosen is the core of her identity) so as soon as she starts digging deeper and identifies Eldor as an enemy, her pursuit of him and greater strength gets spurred on up to this exact moment— Eldor manipulated the situation so that San would ripe for harvesting.
Following up, here: the Dopple San. We can assume pretty soundly that this isn’t a Golem. We get the suggestion of a Golem from Viviana earlier after Dopple Lilith’s execution. Viviana suggests this because she was able to create a duplicate using a Golem, and that took days of work, surely after all that effort, that’s the limit of what’s possible, right??
Except later in the Last Queen of Gaia, after Eldor body snatches someone (kept vague for new readers), we see him customize the appearance of the body using magic. Every last detail he replicates. So then… after reading between the lines because we don’t need everything explicitly explained to us…
It can be concluded that Eldor used a member of his own cult for this purpose (she knows the layout of a cult hideout down to the room numbers). Eldor groomed this member of his cult specifically so that she would die looking like San de Vertis (I assume so people would stop looking for her). He morphed this cult member to resemble San perfectly. Likely trained her to speak and act like her.
Likewise for the fake execution, Eldor morphed someone to look and sound like Lilith. As for whether or not this person was a cultist is a little less clear because of their ravings about Trias before the guillotine is dropped, but what really matters is that Eldor made Lilith seem like a lunatic and non-threat before Olrik has her killed.
The explanations are there even if they’re not stated. “At least the story is entertaining.” It’s more than that if you give it more than 5 seconds of thought.
@Dan With the amount of times that characters are put in dangerous situations, and San’s personality, it could be wishful thinking about someone who hasn’t shown up for awhile, as much as it could be the booby trap mentioned. We have no idea what the booby trap was meant to do, after all. It could blow up half the fortress just as much as drowning the search party in orange soda. @ Puyon:
That’s a good synopsis, and just one theory out of several. Point- and we can talk about this since it’s ‘past’ in the comic run. You use Golem to describe the copy, when we’ve seen golems as rock monsters during the school arc in the beginning. Red Hall 18. While golem is a reasonable description of the Second Lillith, she’s still a robot. (automaton? Autodoll?) And she was the one used in the execution. We have no idea what the Second San is, and Novil and Powree are/were likely to come up with something that has never been mentioned in the story up to now. (Novil idea?) A stack of sentient polymorphed meatmelons. A bundle of spells in a green dress. Artistically sculptured golem. The second Lillith again in a different outfit. His own robot- If Viviana could build it in a cave in a day or two, then a team of elves could build one when the nuclear reactor/crashed Federation starship is behaving itself. Some dwarven secret. The reanimated, mind-controlled body of one of the Eldor’s Student girls. And yes, maybe an elf who had simply been lied to as to who the trap would kill.
And yes, maybe an elf who had simply been lied to as to who the trap would kill.
Again the confusion: Disciples of the two heavens are NOT elves. They are humans Eldor is using. I don’t think Eldor would let an elf commit suicide attack, but some misguided human? Easily.
And nothing gets explained, revisited, or even mentioned later. Just like Eldor killing San’s friends. At least the story is entertaining.
@ Vicious Sand:
I don’t remember anything about that. Do they get killed as well, or “false San” only?
@ Sekhmet:
The killing of San’s friends is here:

Are you sure the rock monster golem isn’t exactly same thing, just less sculptured?
