Well, I guess that explains why Ilias wasn’t there to resist the guards.
That being said, in their defense I’ll just point out that the guards were attacking as a party. As best we can tell from the previous comic, they had a mage, a technical person (maybe another mage?), two melee guards and an archer; and they were pre-buffed and going in ready for action. Just ask any GM how much having a party of adventurer’s pre-buffed and already ready to go changes the balance of combat… It’s not really a fair comparison to the riot in the square where the guards were taken by surprise, and then face a situation where there’s threats everywhere. Not to mention the distraction of the on-going speech.
In any case, just goes to show that Viviana and Ilias have plans in motion, and were smart enough to realize that the broadcast would be tracked down. Ilias’ time is better spent accomplishing… Something…. after being given credibility and reknown being introduced to the world as her fiance.
I’m on the edge of my seat in anticipation of what’s coming. I’ve been through the story once, but I’m still super excited to see what’s coming next.
@ Zitchas:
The guards on the square are also more akin to beat cops. They are probably not trained to as high of a combat standard. Their daily job consists more of taking care of petty thieves and the like. Whereas the guards send to the transmission station would be the equivalent of a SWAT unit. They are acting in a coordinate manner, stacking up at the door etc. They probably train for this kind of scenario (raiding some rogue mages tower or taking down a necromancer) all day every day.
Now that I think about it, Viviana and Ilias were probably smart to not put a pile of traps in their way and fight back when they arrive. That would just give the guards (who I assume are professionals) a reason to attack with lethal force. So long as they are just arresting a dissident who is broadcasting, there is no justification for “accidentally” killing her on the way to prison. As soon as she starts fighting back, though, all bets are off. This was probably a gamble, though, that things were happening too fast for the King to send out “Kill on sight” orders.
Hmmm, I note that Viviana doesn’t have the Avaril on her anywhere in this comic, but she did in the last one. Makes me wonder a bit:
a) Are the guards now in posession of the Avaril?
b) Did she handoff the Avaril to Ilias and wear a decoy for the last bit of the broadcast?
c) Was it a fake the whole time?
Overall, it seems a bad idea to let the Avaril and rainbow blade fall into the hands of the guards. DId they make plans for that too?

@ Mikaru86:
That is probably true, yeah.
