So the exploding pillar of light is what was supposed to kill Lillith? I guess she didn’t have a shield to do something about that. We arn’t told what the purpose of that spell is. It’s yet another thing that gets lost in the story flow.
@ Vicious Sand:
Eldor just said it: the purpose is destroying the shield around the source. (It’s implied that the spell gathers Lilith’s ability to do so.)
@ Vicious Sand:
Well, extracting the soul of someone’s body seems enough to kill, I guess? No need for a pillar of destruction?
Since the extraction of Lilith’s soul is interrupted by Eldor being, well, dead (not exactly but the spell has been interrupted automatically), my guess is that the pillar of light comes from the brutal interruption, freeing the sphere.
It seems that Eldor dying also triggers an automatic shield around the zone (which explains why Ilias can’t enter), dunno exactly why. Some automatic protection mechanism.
The sphere contains San’s energy and Lilith’s capacities/soul, and is supposed to help Eldor break the TSS around the source.
The sphere is not fully complete with her soul but Eldor uses it anyway, it might be enough.
Other possibility: the sphere is complete/full, but Eldor did not calculate that Lilith could be still alive (maybe because of her partitioning her mind). The spell was just complete when it exploded, and if Eldor has been alive at this point he would have kept everything under control. He is not, so booom. And the sphere flies away.
@ Vicious Sand: I’m more interested in that red mist that left Eldo when he was stabbed, and appeared around Sandril’s mouth as he tackled Lilith. An impending possession?

For your question, the answer is easy, and you will have it next panel (or the one after). 🙂
