The thing is, Eldor’s wrong about this being a consequence of his plans being ruined. At what point does this factor into unleashing Bahamut the dragon on the capital city as a counter-move for anything that Viviana has done? He had already set up the targeting lasers, or whatever they were to be used as. This is revenge for killing Eldor, or his original body. Body transference is sure to cause thinking problems. A glass of wine can do that. Eldor wanted to ‘weaken the Source’, as if knocking down a tree is going to do that. The tree is a naturally occurring thing that came after the Source, and is played up because trees are seen as a good thing to have around, by humans. The Source doesn’t need the great tree, for anything. And Eldor doesn’t need Bahamut to open a portal door, either. He could have left by now, without summoning the dragon. He could also have built something to shield Lillith from the in-room pillar of backwash of the spell he cast.

No, I don’t think he is. Presumably if Lilith hadn’t send Sandril to kill Eldor, Eldor would’ve been able to command Bahamut to return into the portal after destroying the tree.
The Great Tree is a place where the Bluestream is heavily concentrated, which is likely why it was targeted in the first place. I don’t know about the exact mechanics of it, but destroying the tree likely makes it easier to destroy the time suspension shield.

I believe, due to his last words on page 188 and all the mess going on, that destroying the tree is actually the backup plan. If everything had gone right and he had the sphere, he’d probably just have walked away with it, no need to even call Bahamut.

That’s also a possibility.
