That’s a career-ending injury or two. One looks to be above the knee, the other below it.
She can still be the queen, that’s a sitting job. And a mobile throne kinda sounds cool, ya think?
Ugh… I guess that pretty much ends this comic for me. When you do not ‘respect’ your main characters… I wanted to read something fun and entertaining, not “Game of Thrones”.
@ Yellow:
Don’t stop reading, I think you’ll find it will be something other than GoT.
@ Yellow:
Maybe the rest of the comic isn’t for you. But you’ve got this far, ask yourself if it’s not you who’s disrespecting a much needed sacrifice.
@ Yellow:
What’s your actual problem with this? Many fighters lose limbs in war. Some of them go on to be heroes after the amputation. You seem to be disrespecting them.
@ Old Brit:
Yeah, I’ve got a friend who’s a double amputee. It hardly ended his life. These things happen.
In a fantasy world where magic is prevalent, it won’t be surprising if she can walk again within a couple pages. Not to mention that her image in the title page shows her having feet (in shoes).
@ Yellow:
Douglas Bader had very similar injuries, which didn’t stop him becoming a highly decorated wing commander in WWII. Once he was in a prisoner of war camp the Germans had to take his artificial legs away from him to stop repeated escape attempts.
Not to mention that thanks to the Avril, she can fly. I don’t think legs are required for that, although they certainly help with landing and center if gravity.
And then there is the fact that she personally built a replica of Viviana that moved so perfectly it fooled alert guards. If she can do that, legs seem like a challenge, but not an impossibility.
But also that aside, why is it disrespectful to her character? Her ability to plan had always been her strength, along with her will to do what she needs to do. Losing her legs is a huge blow, yes, and may well result in some trauma and life long adjustments. But she can still plan, she can still lead, and she arguably has more people than ever looking to her for these things. She doesn’t need to be the one on the front lines cracking windows and pocketing jewels. Actually, chances are the days of the shadows dancers as a whole being just thieves is behind them now. Time to move on from being freedom fighters, and become freedom leaders.
@ Zitchas:
The Avaril allows controlled falling, not true flight.
@ Yellow:
” When you do not ‘respect’ your main characters”
That’s a matter that the Rei Movies from Star Wars crossed. This, (waves at today’s page), is “Who needs hands?” Viviana finally getting her plot armour missing. She totally usurped the main character spot from Lillith and has been coasting ever since. Yes, I remember the bleeding ears thing in the haunted forest.
@ Owen Smith:
Hmmmm, I was under the impression that it allowed a fair bit more than just controlled falling, based on what we have seen in previous strips. Beyond that, it’s a priceless artifact and treated as if it had great power… Given all those flying portation spheres and stuff, just being able to levitate and fly doesn’t seem like it would be a very unique capability. As such, I have generally assumed that it allowed something fairly close to perfect flight and/or other capabilities.
That being said, “Controlled falling” could include things like being able to change the direction that gravity pulls the wearer. So, falling upwards, falling sideways, etc. That would allow the flight and usage we have seen so far and potentially be quite a bit more powerful than just an amulet of feather fall.
The Avaril, as explained in page 94 of BAB, is a one of a kind flight crystal, its uniqueness being a very easy activation requirement. That implies its priceless value is more historical/symbolic rather than actual power.
@ Yellow:
I hope you have now read the next strip and seen that this is not the end for Vivi.
