My comment for this page from Gaia: sic mundus creatus est:Some readers were critical of the form of San’s vow of allegiance. I don’t think the criticism is warranted, though, since it’s a heartfelt pledge and San also couldn’t have waited much longer to make it. San was actually moved by Viviana’s humane reaction to Lilith’s outburst. However, in almost all other stories, characters that are shown as cold and calculating at some point ultimately turn out to be irredeemable assholes, so many readers interpreted every action by San in the worst possible way.

I always felt that Sam’s calculations were generally aimed towards the greater good, even if sometimes she would be seen to shine if they worked out. She plotted and schemed with the best available information and was playing chess with a formidable opponent.
This supports my reading of her.
I agree with Frith Ra’s interpretation. San is complicated but sincere in her wish to do good in her role and follow her duty.
I wonder if she is addressing Vivi in her speech, or rather addressing Gaia? She says “Her Majesty” and not “Your Majesty”.
@ Marterius: Savos also said ‘Her Majesty’ in his vow of allegiance, and he was directly addressing Vivi.
@ Old Brit:
True, good point. So let’s just assume they address royalties different than we do. 🙂
“Your Majesty” is for addressing the the queen directly. “Her Majesty” would be the correct form for swearing an oath, because you a referring to the queen as the object of allegiance. It’s a declaration, they aren’t conversing with her.
