I didn’t get it on my first read-through, but I’m surprised Gaia made poisonous berries.

Interesting remark.
It could be the food to some other organism, while being toxic for humans. Maybe Gaia created different creatures that need to eat different stuff.
Or it could be a poison that, in a very small amount, can be useful. Imagine it being a strong painkiller, in small doses it can help, in big amounts it can kill you.
