Yes, and no. No, you can’t be “just friends.” But yes, you *can* be very good friends. A very good friendship has no need to be or become romantic. It can simply be “very good friends,” and that is plenty.
There’s a lot of value and depth to the various forms of friendship, intimacy, and trust that do not involve romance, eroticism, marriage, or the like. I must admit, I continually run into that with certain RPG trends of late. I want to be very good, very trustworthy friends with my teammates and fellow adventurers. I don’t want to date them, or anything physical beyond a solid hug, hand on the shoulder, or just being good company by the fire. Quit making all the “let’s be friends” dialogue options automatically lead to “let’s ditch our clothes, and maybe think about dating after” situations.

God, people can’t just be friends anymore.
When you have lots of chemistry, and give someone the most valuable jewelry of your kingdom, no you can’t just be friends. :p
