  • Scarlet: No!
  • Tibor: “It can also be ruled out that the depicted machine would be able to control the weather on all of Lavarel.”
  • Scarlet: Why?!
  • Tibor: “Its design rather suggests that it’s an Ilumian refinery built during the reign of President Vasanta.”
  • Scarlet: What!?
  • Scarlet: An Ilumian factory?! Have they lost their marbles!?
  • Scarlet: I didn’t think it’d be so hard to find people who believe me…

  1. “Ilium – The lost Ilian Republic dominated the second age together with its arch enemy Arcadia.” So Ilium is a country, not a metal like mithril. A refinery would be a good reason why there’s a farmhouse there. All the other buildings were torn down- or burnt down.
There are many who would love to have a secret passageway to work. No commute, just a ten minute walk down a corridor behind the bookshelf.
The possibility of a small tent city for people working at a refinery does lead into the possibility of the outhouses, or lack thereof, resulting in a well fertilized area of land.
There is the question of what it refined? Metal or grain? A natural deposit of something like phosphor or sulfur? An oil deposit? And what ran out for it to close down? Could there still be ore in the mines?

    1. Considering the setting and the time that facility existed, it could be for energy crystals. This of course assumes that energy crystals are refined during their production.

      1. If it were a refinery for energy crystals, than it could indeed be a machine of eternal summer, if its output were high enough to power the planet’s civilisations.

      2. Energy crystals typically don’t need refinement.

  2. Tibor: “Oh, the letter continues: “…no, a factory is a facility that produces finished goods, a refinery is a facility for purifying and separating raw materials.” “.

  3. This has all but blown one of the leads Scarlet had. There was the possibility that Abel had once the same experience as Scarlet did and put part of his experience into a children’s book. Now it looks more like he just used an illustration of a machine he thought looked good as an inspiration for his fantasy machine.

That does leave us with Scarlet’s vision though. I do know of at least one anime/mange that has the main character experience something on camera and then much later reveals that what we saw back then wasn’t 100% what happened, but rather what the main character remembered. There is a chance this comic is pulling a similar trick. Now, if we instead assume there is no trick and Scarlet saw what she saw, why would she find a secret passage to a refinery in her cellar?

    1. “put part of his experience into a children’s book.” Using a picture of your workplace in a children’s book illustration? It’s not theft, it’s accuracy.
“why would she find a secret passage to a refinery in her cellar?” 1)Rum running. 2) The manager had to live somewhere. Since the cave was there first, Mr Whoever built the building that became a farmhouse above the cave offshoot and had it turned into a corridor. 3) In case of worker revolt, he can just dash back home and empty his safe. Or the reverse, so he can go from home to work and nick something fast from the business’ motor pool.

It’s entirely possible that the machine is simply disguised as a refinery!

    1. Only Novil knows! 😊

  5. Is it just me, or is Scarlet really a bit older here? As if some time had passed, maybe half a year or even a year.

    1. I noticed that too! Just a few pages ago, she was about as tall as Tibor’s elbow when both were standing upright. Now, she’s up to his shoulder. Plus, her hair is longer and her hair is a bit more angular. She’s definitely grown some!

      1. “Her FACE is a bit more angular” is what I meant to write. Stupid lack of an edit function…

    2. She’s around three months older than on the second page of the comic.

It’s notoriously hard to consistently draw the height of characters in a long-form comic. Adjusting the height of the depicted characters is my most frequent type of change request, even in front of adjusting facial expressions.

Small children pose an additional challenge: You often have to draw them taller than they actually are so that we don’t only see the top of their head when they’re talking to an adult.

And it gets even harder when you have children that age significantly through the course of the comic, like Scarlet.
