A Sky Full of Stars 028

  • Scarlet: I found a secret passageway in my parent’s house in Milik. It leads to a giant machine that will bring warm weather to Lavarel again if we manage to turn it back on!
  • Silvana Mirkning: The loss of her parents must have taken a heavy toll on her.
  • Tibor: No, what Scarlet says is true. She really saw that machine. I also didn’t believe her at first, but now I do.
  • Silvana Mirkning: Why would you believe such a silly story?
  • Tibor: Because Scarlet is a genius. In a few years, she’ll be the smartest person on all of Lavarel.
  • Silvana Mirkning: That’s crazy! I need to hear the whole story!
  • Silvana Mirkning: Would you accompany us home to tell us everything in detail?
  • Scarlet: Sure!
  • Julius: Are you really that smart?
  • Scarlet: I dunno. Maybe?

  1. BlackDragonSlayer

I suspect Scarlet now has a rich patron to fund her quest.

  2. It is great to see how Tibor has changed from helping Scarlet to having just absolute faith in her.

He believes in her, past reason, past hope, past courage, past despair. He’ll back her to the end, because he believes.

    1. Note: I don’t think he’s shown that level of belief yet.
      But I think we will.

  3. On the plus side, Tibor and Scarlet stay in someone’s guest room for a few days. On the other hand, they’re invited in by someone who likes to pick random people off the street, which is kinda iffy. Any guesses who’s going to steal something first- Tibor or Scarlet?
For the machine to work, someone must have already built it before now. It’s still more likely to be the equivalent of a liquid nitrogen maker in someone’s garage.

    1. I don’t think they steal anything. I think they convince them to give it to them voluntarily.

Sure the machine worked. Planet Lavarel, calling their sun Lavarel’s Star … very likely this planet is colonized from space and was subject of terraforming by network of machines which failed due to insufficient maintenance.

      1. That’s one possibility. Another is that the great war broke the climate. That explanation would however mean there is likely no machine of eternal summer. I can think of a third explanation, the magictec energy crystals are made by draining the planet, which causes the cold. If that one is true, there is no machine of eternal summer, but the energy production facilities are effectively machines of eternal winter that had to be turned off.
So far, there are plausible explanation both for a machine of eternal summer to exist, to not exist or there being something in between those cases, a twist.

    2. Why would Scarlett or Tibor steal anything? I don’t think they have been poor long enough for even Tibor to revert to his old shenanigans, and there’s no indication Scarlett was ever a thief.

  4. As I said in the comment of the previous table, as well as in “Time to speculate”: the beginning of the creation of a new religion, with Scarlet as a prophet!

  5. Scarlet is a 4th grader reading and comprehending at a college junior level, I say Tibor’s assessment is accurate.

  6. IMHO, this early in their adventure, it’s really not a good idea to tell everyone they see about an all powerful weather altering machine in her basement. Eventually the wrong ears are going to hear this story and go looking for the machine. The military on either side would certainly turn it into a weapon.

    1. If that machine exists, it would realistically need a lot of energy crystals. I don’t see how she can avoid involving a government once she activates it.

      1. The crystals may already be in place.

        1. Considering that Tibor’s gun ran out of power, I assume that energy crystals work like batteries and have to be replaced/recharged. If the machine needs to maintain the summer, then it will need a major energy supply. If the machine makes a climate change and then the work is done, then having crystals in place already may be enough. Of course, this can all be null and void if the machine doesn’t exist.

    2. Not many people know WHERE she lived. Sure, it PROBABLY is in government records … unless those were lost due to war.

  7. Silvana was easily intrigued. I don’t think Scarlet being a genius is a good argument for her being right. She may just be curious though.

  8. I somehow wished that the convincing would have been more fleshed out. There is not even any proof given about Scarlet being a genius, although this could have been relatively easy achieved. Much more difficult than proving the existence of the machine by itself.
of course I am happy for Scarlet and Tibor. That the story develops like this now.
