Next stop is the National Museum. What kind of exhibits do you think they’ll find there?
If someone has a very good idea, there would be one available panel that could feature it.
Shankar
Something like the “March of Progress” fossils, but for the wolves or foxes (unless precluded by them not evolving on Lavarel, of course).
DysprosiumDy
I second this!
BlackDragonSlayer
I think a rudimentary firearm (as in, an early iteration of the weapons they use now) would be fun 😀
Vicious Sand
Ah, yes, the shoulder mounted Lighting Ray, only 1/10th the strength of Tibor’s pistol. And by shoulder mounted, I mean “Put it on a cart, because I ain’t getting crushed by it.” 🙂
That’s not counting “Own a musket for home defense.” with ray guns.

Certain types of energy crystals are a perfect fit for the usage in firearms. So they’ve already had good ones available since the dawn of recorded history.
Vincent
A map of their solar system perhaps?
Graybeard
The planet’s earliest known magical artifact? (Hint: it could bear an uncanny resemblance to a Swiss army knife.)
Novil
If you called a device fueled by an energy crystal “magic”, it would very likely be some plain gun. An okay choice, but also not particularly interesting.

Museum displays are often about 4 things- War and it’s generals. Founders and kings. Inventions and practical application of science- ie, dams and the horseless carriage. Nature- as in geology and birds. Usually the local birds since they like to play-up the local charm. Maybe a dinosaur or whale skeleton display. As a colony world, it’s interesting to see what history has developed, and what has been forgotten.
Perhaps Scarlet will start silently crying in the upbeat beet farming exhibit.
Random museum rambling-
The stuffed and mounted bodies of Lillith Calean and her friends.
The taxidermied body of Sandra and Woo, Planetary Adventurers. Ala’ the fate of the
astronauts in Planet of the Apes.
A time suspension shield, not to be confused with the Sea Sculpture of Niven’s Known Space. Eldor’s ‘Enterprise” clothes always misdirected me about his origins.
An explanation behind the matter-energy magic of the shard coins.
A brief exposition of the successive steps of breakdown of the Lavarel world government, from the unified and educated state of the first-generation Landers, to the later breakaway states, kings, and petty squabble wars. What was the Wild West era like? When those in charge refuse to admit that they’re losing they really tend to make everything look happy and everyone look strong, not freezing and starving.
A model of the Lavarel solar system.
A display of local versions of famous historical artifacts like the “Liberty leading the people” painting of France, or The Birth of Venus, etc. Would the statue of David be a fox-man? Anyway, it’s just a “Tibor covers Scarlet’s eyes joke.”
Scarlet the bloodthirsty being carried away from the “Wait. This is the future. Where are all the ray guns?” (Demolition Man) display.
Something about the Fox King and the Wolf King, and/or the royal family of each.
Various standing stones, tree stumps, and giant bugs. Or the other route, and something about orchestras, famous paintings, and ballet.
A display of corporate arrogance, err, advertising. Maybe beside a chart that shows how much vitamin B is necessary for today’s stressful lifestyle, how many NovilCakes you should eat, and the chart tables that show how much time Tibor has until Scarlet turns all his hair white from her antics.

Lol, no.

I want to go for something more visual.

There will be a painting shown in detail.

Tibor wouldn’t be bothered by Scarlet seeing an artistic rendering of a naked person.
Vicious Sand
Haha, I’m sure it will all work out for the best. The production team has a good handle on action scenes, so that’ll bode well for a good historic painting.

“National” Museum as in, depicting the history *of the nation* (which is a regional kingdom)? I’d expect that to focus on the regent’s lineage and past wars … maybe a low (= kids friendly) showcase tucked away in a corner, explaining the elements shown on their flag (which every upstanding citizen should already know by heart)?
Otherwise … as a technician, I’d like to see some technical concepts they tried, but found infeasible. Maybe with a bit of irony. Like what we’d call a bicycle, a car, and a railroad locomotive, under a sign that says that “these all are working concept vehicles, but building a network of the ‘roads’ they require has been found to be prohibitively expensive”. 😛
Novil
>>>> explaining the elements shown on their flag
Too basic for a museum: The circle in the center symbolizes Lavarel’s sun. The star in the top left refers to the night sky. The crown in the top right symbolizes Kirelia’s monarchy. The crystal in the bottom left stands for Kirelia’s most important natural resource. The flower in the bottom right represents Kirelia’s national flower.

That was a good idea that I decided to use.
Arthur
Contemporary portraits of the nation’s founders would be interesting to see.
An Orrery of their solar system would also be cool to see.
Fan
Depictions of extinct fruits and vegetables, perhaps with some comical misunderstandings (e.g. presuming that potato’s berries are the edible part).
Perhaps some accepted explanation for the climate collapse with a little scale model.
Crystalgate
Maybe some unusual magical artifacts. The settings page states that they are only understood on a surface level, so that may be an opportunity to show us that.
Thomas
Were there ever Catfolk? Or Racoon? Always seemed odd to me that Fox/Wolves were unique.
Novil
Thanks for the suggestions. I selected the car as a failed invention.
HKMaly
I was going to suggest something flying (airplane or balloon), but maybe they didn’t get that far.
Hegel-Marx
Something related to the Arcadian rainbow disk, which Scarlet’s dad found in the field at the beginning of the story. As I wrote in “Time to speculate”, I expect that it has some role in the story, e.g. that it is actually the key that opens the portal to the Machine.
BlackDragonSlayer
She’s really just telling anyone who’ll listen 😛
HKMaly
What makes you think them listening is prerequisite?
Vicious Sand
And they don’t even have to ask.
Grathew
I wonder if there will be a reference or two to the other comics?
Vicious Sand
Scarlet’s gonna get them “interviewed” in the basement at this rate. Nobody questions how thick the stone walls are in old buildings… On the plus side, maybe they can get a look at an Iluminum Refinery display. 😀
It’s unclear if this is one building or several. Governmental officials (the Lord’s Argument Club) rarely meet in the same complex where gemstones are annealed, though tour groups are often a thing there. It helps people be reminded that the government exists and is working for them. (one day out of every 7..)
What’s going on with the giant crystal? Not that Scarlet and Tibor could afford souvenirs. Buying a snow globe or a patriotic tea towel would bankrupt them.
Crystalgate
I wonder if the big crystal is the 8:th source crystal and what it is that it is doing. Is it creating or recharging energy crystals? If that’s the case, it seems to happen infrequent enough for the guide the exclaim that it’s almost time, so either the energy crystals have a great capacity or it doesn’t seem like it could produce enough of them for every day use. Heck, where does the energy come from and does the people operating the crystal even know?
Novil
Yes, it is the Source Crystal. It creates Shards (coins).
—
>>>> where does the energy come from and does the people operating the crystal even know?
It comes from the Master Crystal in the central square between Capella and Calisto, the Twin Cities and capital cities of Avernum and Olandur. It’s basically the center of Lavarel, if a sphere has a center.
