  1. Like I said, there are times when Scarlet reminds me of Sandra. 😉

    1. As it happens, I’ve thought ever since she was introduced that Julius’ mom looks a lot like Ye Thuza. Julius=Cloud also works. But where’s annoying little sister?

      1. As it will turn out, the whole eternal winter mess is the result of one of Yuna’s entropy manipulation devices going out of control… again. The reason you don’t see her around is that she is grounded.

  2. Wait, isn’t this their first kiss? …Well, I suppose kissing him once IS technically “even more often” than never. ^_^

    1. Scarlet’s wording makes it sound like they kissed before while Julius’ reaction implies it was their first kiss. I’m guessing it is their first kiss.

  3. The exchange on New Year’s Day?
    Is this like, uh, tax?

    1. BlackDragonSlayer

Tax, or some sort of automatic inflation seems likely: “Your dollar of yesteryear is now worth 80 cents” except the dollar is literally swapped out with 80 cents. I’m guessing the red segments have lower value, if they’re not defunct as currency entirely.

  4. The coins- so, you have less money the longer you keep it? I’ve always hated that. The artificial changing of the pricing structure of the goods market in turn affecting the value of Country’s unit of currency is one thing, but the coins by themselves reducing themselves is just evil. I suspect that it has more to do with the energy-to-matter theory of Lavarel’s freezing, and everyone just goes along with it and calls it a function of The Economy. They’re like batteries that loose A% of their charge over B amount of time.
As for the new year’s party, good for Scarlet and Julius. They make a good couple.

    1. It’s actually a part of Gesell economics and, while it’s challenging to implement with physical currency (advanced energy-based coins aside), could actually be something economists consider if CBDCs are enforced upon the population.

Imagine getting a paycheck that consists of so much money that can only be used for housing, another for energy, another for food and, within the portion you’re allowed to spend freely, a percentage you’re permitted to save (which may or may not attract negative/positive interest). Depending on your outlook, it’s either a brave new world or the end of economic mobility.

      1. I wouldn’t call it “challenging to implement” .. I’d call it “bloody idiocy”..

      2. Ooooh, the wet dream of socialists! Just FORCE people to spend their money in way compatible with their planned economy. We can’t have anyone thinking outside the box and make some progress.

  5. I think we might need some more exposition here. Maybe a brief sub-note in setting>politics? It’s not quite clear what’s happening in the image.

  6. Why would a poor person not worry about their money, losing value? In relative terms loss is the same, of course, an absolute terms it’s less than for a rich person, but if you need any little bit of money to survive, then the small loss will be even harder on yours than on the rich person.

    1. They live from day to day, so they barely have any savings that lose value.

  7. This is an interesting system replacing inflation. Instead of there being more and more money valued less as the government prints more of it, the existing money is reduced as more of it is… let’s call it minted for now. One problem is that the process happens at the same time for all coins, meaning there would be an incentive for people to spend it before Iceclaw and stores would want people to spend them after Iceclaw. I would expect prices to go up at least during Deepcold and then down again during Iceclaw to both prevent the logistical problem of having to stock more wares on Deepcold (a real problem in December in our world) and to avoid getting a load of money that looses x% of their value.

  8. Many of your remarks and questions will be addressed in the next page.

    1. We look forward to it!

  9. Ohh my, poor Julius is dead… Such happiness so early in a story rarely goes unpunished;p
