- Gale Nenawa: You have to leave as quickly as possible!
- Scarlet: Why? What’s going on?
- Gale Nenawa: Your dad just shot the son of the chief of the city guard!
- Tibor: … Oh.
- Gale Nenawa: Quick!
- Gale Nenawa: Can’t you go faster?!
- Scarlet: No, not really.
- Scarlet: Whoa!

That escalated quickly.

Well, how was he to know?

I guess that’s a good reason not to escalate a fight when your opponent is running away, especially when you don’t recognize them.
Dys
Maybe. But Tibor was hired to defend the food supply and letting robbers escape wouldn’t have have been productive either. This was just a very unfortunate outcome.
BadRoad
Tibor had already recovered the food. The food was protected. Catching one more thief wasn’t going to protect the food more.

Both were going for the gun, Tibor seemed to be trying to apprehend before that.
But the shot seemed to be more a heat of the moment thing.
BadRoad
Apprehending is what brought the gun close enough for the getaway driver to try to grab it.
Crystalgate
The one who really escalated the situation was the thief. It may however indeed not been a good tactical choice to capture one extra thief. Tibor could easily have ran a bit slower and settled for the two he already had since the chase was always going to come with some danger. On the other hand, if everyone thinks like that, who then captures lawbreakers?
BadRoad
The city guard can capture lawbreakers. Or nobody can. That’s not Tibor’s job. Tibor’s job is protecting the food, which had already been accomplished.
Crystalgate
We do not know if it is Tibor’s job, we should not assume things work like in our world. Security guards also have nabbed thieves in our world too.

This is why criminals stay criminals, with no fear of consequences for their actions they keep on stealing or robbing until one of their victims ends up dead because they don’t hand everything over on the spot. Yet when the ones spouting this foolishness are robbed they’re the first to scream that the authorities aren’t doing their job. “The definition of a Conservative is a liberal that’s been mugged.”
BadRoad
Consequences don’t stop people from being criminals; if they did we wouldn’t have the word “recidivism”. Also you’ve made a pretty good argument for why some very wealthy people ought to be arrested.
The fact is these thieves were stealing *food* because they were *desperate*. If you’re hungry enough, property rights with respect to food start to seem ridiculous.

Note that Gale doesn’t really seem to think it was BAD idea. The brat probably deserved it. I mean, like, even before he started stealing. They can’t stay, but he helps them escape.

The previous page Scarlet said Tibor would be rewarded. Gale is a true reward. He is risking his life to save them (I guess he is doing it because of Scarlet, but Tibor goes with the pack).
BlackDragonSlayer
Welp, there’s the connection. The question is, did the city guard organize the raid, or is this something the chief’s son did on his own initiative?
Also, not sure who’s more perturbed to be carried lol

Such a perfect gig, ruined! The mine would give Scarlet the ability to look for ore or a buried stash. The mine’s supply of manuals and Bluey’s book collection would give S the chance to look up that refining machine that Ask Mr Answer said the Machine was. It was a job that came with a food supply. And now they have to vanish before they get disappeared because some punk wanted to be a “They’ll never arrest me” punk. Now they can’t even use their real names. If they’re going to dye their hair, they’ll need extra for Tibor.
Nice of Gail to help them live through this shocking revelation. The expressions on their faces are well drawn.

Gale showing himself to be Buff As Fuck, carrying a full grown fox and a teenager. That’s no easy task!

Okay, this probably explains how the thieves could have access to the truck. I believe the engine has to be very valuable and may even be an old artifact that cannot be reproduced. If the chief of the city guard has the power to turn a solid self defense into a crime, alternatively easily circumvent the justice system, he can probably get his hands on an expensive artifact.
I stated previously that killing people has consequences even if legally justified, but this is just bad luck. Well, many of us always suspected a powerful person may be involved and Tibor should have done so as well, but this is still bad luck.
The animosity between the townspeople and the miners will definitely increase. A powerful man who’s supposed to uphold the law very likely being behind this heist doesn’t make things better. That said, if the mine owner is pressured into sharing his food, his mining will be in jeopardy and consequently, so will the food packets from Avernun be.
There is a chance the fox thief just “borrowed” the truck from his father and that the chief of the city guard was not involved in the heist. I guess that improves the situation for the town, but not so much for Scarlet and Tibor.

That was something I was wondering about.
Was this attempted robbery just a move in a power struggle between the mine owner and the City Officials, or maybe just the Chief Guard?
A pretty advanced vehicle. A 5-6 man team IIRC (I don’t feel like going back and counting people). This was a heist. But was it a sanctioned heist?
The other more paranoid part of me wonders if Gale is leading them into a trap.

I’m trying to reconcile all this with the throwaway (but, as always, good) art in the last panel of 079, which shows a fox apparently arresting a human at gunpoint. Either there’s another guard at the mine, or the town guard showed up to help, or a rival gang took exception to what this one was doing, or … something. In any case, even the most rudimentary briefing of the two new guards, say back around 067, should have brought them up to speed on what the threats are and the fact(?) that they will have support from somewhere. It is still open to question where that fox came from. thoughts? Incidentally, it’s clear that it isn’t Gale; different fur color.
TonViper
I still say an official debriefing just after the incident would have been a good idea, and for Tibor as well, allowing them to document their version of events early on.

Scarlet is a 12-13 year old girl and understandably can’t run fast enough. This is a repeat of the situation from the table MOES #030, when six-year-old Scarlet was picked up by Tibor as they were fleeing from Grondan soldiers.
But why did Gale grab Tibor too? A full-grown fox should be able to run as fast as a wolf, and certainly faster than a wolf with a heavy load.
Owen Smith
I’m confused by the last two panels. Second to last looks like they fell down hole, last looks like Gail is flying and carrying them.
BadRoad
Panel six, Gail is grabbing them (he’s substantially taller). Panel seven, he’s running up a hill.

I have read other stories from you and i like this one very much.
