  1. With “A Sky Full of Stars 055” in mind, here begins an odyssey of the ant chasing the grasshopper.

  2. Someone make sure to compliment Elli for this page. The main characters are great, the last panel has some lovely houses that make Oris seem right out of Amsterdam.

But the part that deserves high praise? The guy handing Tibor the mail in panel 1.
Look at those sharp edged lines in his face and neck. Look how much his shirt cuff hangs around his wrist. Look at how his shirt is clinging to his waist, folded inwards. Look at his pant legs, they’re a bit baggy.

This is a man who has come very close to not being able to give them that letter due to starvation. Tiny little details that you can see more clearly at 175% zoom, but which are still recognizable in the broad strokes at normal zoom.

A true artist can tell a story in a single panel. Damn Elli is good.

    1. I agree. There’s a lot of “background details” that we’re supposed to gloss over, while at the same time recognizing that they’re there or not, like the blur panels 3 and 4. Life instincts meeting something that has to have everything drawn down in it. The foggy background in 3 is just part of the mood setting of Scarlet’s shock and focus while reading the letter- there’s nothing there that’s more important than the midground. The next panel flows directly from that. Panels 1 and 2 need the details of where they are and what condition the buildings are. Was everything rundown and ruined while Scarlet was away? (no.) The background in the last panel is needed as a establishing shot, as when you realize that the second to last panel is a departure snap. So it was all necessary.

      1. Please read my comment below yours (in case you miss it). Thank you.

    2. Elli is one of the best webcomic artist I’m aware of. Her own webcomic, Tistow.uk is filled with details. I cannot say enough how good – no, fantastic! – she is. I enjoy returning over and over to each episode to look and scruntinise her art, often discovering tiny details that I might’ve missed before. I’ve written to say how much I enjoy it and ask about some of these details. She’s pleased that I have and said more will be revealed as the story progresses. If you haven’t seen her comic, please check it out. You will NOT be disappointed!!
I’m thrilled that the author, Oliver Knörzer chose Elli as the artist for his story.

      1. Oho, I wondered what other work EP had done.

      2. I took a look and yeah it’s good and I’m interested in where it goes.

  3. BlackDragonSlayer

    inb4 they just left

  4. When they finally do catch up to Julius and his family, Tibor is entitled to give Mr. Mirkning a big, fat “I Told You So” re: stockpiling food for the then-impending famine.

  5. in B4 Julius got into a political marriage to save his family’s livelihood.

  6. A city who has such food deliveries among cities who don’t would not want refuges from those other cities to eat that food. Velis limited the food handout to its citizens only. Still, the Mirkning’s plan was better than nothing.
I still wonder why Avernum is so much better of they even can hand out food packets to other countries.

    1. Avernum is on SOUTH. Closer to equator and therefore not hit SO badly by the climate.

  7. So where are alll the terms of endearment, promises of eternal love, etc.,. that Julius would be expected to fill a letter to Scarlet with?

    1. Depending on the number of hands Julius expected to touch it, he may have purposely left those out, to avoid embarrassing Scarlet or himself.

Also he is 10 or so.
