He reconnected to some of his old shady buddies from before he adopted Scarlet, to break into Julius’ home, what he is gathering is probably something for Scarlets healing or future. That is at least what i gather from it.
Yes, I also suspect the books he plans to take will help Scarlet with her mental healing AND with future.

Sure, he can give Scarlet the Mirkins’ Old Milk and the spare change under the couch cushions. There’s probably not enough hair left in Julius’ bed to make a voodoo doll. Also, it’s not a Fantasy setting, so she couldn’t summon anything anyway.
I think he’s trying to break into the Mirknings home? I can’t quite tell if the last panel is meant to show he succeeded, I don’t think so though? It doesn’t really look like the inside of their home, it must be where he’s staying while they work on this…
Okay went back and looked and actually it DOES look like the entrance of their home, just in disuse. You can see Scarlet standing by this area here as she approaches Julius, and the purse, which must have been Silvana’s, is still there. https://www.sandraandwoo.com/scarlet/comic/a-sky-full-of-stars-036/
At first I thought Tibs was breaking into the house that Layton hired him for. But it’s the Mirkins house instead? That’s more of a good deed. Scarlet deserves some sort of souvenir of Julius, and all parents keep baby teeth and stuff. Since the parents are also dead and gone, it’s preservation, not theft. … Tibor isn’t the sort to gift Scarlet with a bag of Julius’s dirty laundry and underpants dumped over her head? (while she won’t get out of bed in the morning) I’m sure she deserves it for something. Giving Scarlet Julius’s diary, if he has one sounds like a good gift. Anyway, a door lock is rarely a place where mushrooms would grow. What could have been put in there to cause that?
“Mushrooms” and “spools” are terms for higher-security types of pins found in pin-tumbler locks. They have tapered and/or concave shapes which make a lock harder to pick or rake open than if there are only “standard” straight pins.
Too bad neither the Lockpicking Lawyer nor McNally official exist in this world -> they’d have the door open lickity split… though McNally might open the door using another door.
Whatever Tibor is doing, he must consider it important to take this risk. I don’t think they are desperate on founds, they should have gotten quite a bit from the Arcadian armory energy crystals. He is also in Julius’ room and that would not be where the valuables are, but getting keepsakes also does not seem worth it.
Well, he once decided robbing a farmer was a clever way of paying off his (presumably) gambling depts with a loan shark. Without Scarlet he may be a bit judgment impaired. That said getting mementos for Scarlet together with books that may very well be hers in the first place might be very good for her recovery. If he pulls it off…
Oh and I kind of wonder if he may have had an agreement with the Mirknings, kind of if something happens to us, you take care of Julius and vice versa. Not sure if they were close enough for that.
I don’t think he considered the robbery clever, rather it’s likely he saw no other choice. That said, he may be acting in desperation here as well. The problem is, if he is arrested, Scarlet is most likely toast, she may not be able to handle loosing him, even if it’s only to prison.
I was confused about what Tibor was doing. But I agree with ToBeFree and others: it’s Julius’s room, which we saw in #32 and #36 (1st panel – the point of view is exactly the same!). The Mirknings were wealthy and had some heirs, but the house is empty and locked for now. Tibor certainly figured that out earlier. They didn’t break in to rob, but to take some of Julius’s belongings, which will be precious mementos for Scarlet: a telescope, some books and notes, maybe toys (in #32 there’s something like a teddy bear on the bed). Scarlet considered Julius her husband (#76), although her attempt to bribe the clerk to register them failed (#53), so she’s entitled to a share of the inheritance. So it’s not robbery. Scarlet is a know-it-all, but she learned about astronomy from Julius and that’s a priceless memento for her.

I’m afraid I have kind of lost track. Just what is Tibor doing now?
ToBeFree
“Taking care” of their move to Kirkiok. 🙂
I think this is the Mirknings’ house and the lockpicker is carrying away a telescope while Tibor looks for the actually important things.

It’s Julius’s room, you can see a wider angle of it in https://www.sandraandwoo.com/scarlet/comic/a-sky-full-of-stars-032/

Oh dear. Let’s hope this goes smoothly, Scarlet needs her dad around, not in a prison or worse.

Spools and Mushrooms? You know your lockpicking! And you learned it in a country which uses pin tumblers, not lever locks

Oh, you’re optimistic. I thought the lockpicker is taking the telescope as a mostly-random reward for helping Tibor to collect some documents.

I like my version more. 😁
