What do you think of having the cover as the third page? Is it a good continuation of the first two comic pages or should I rather move it later to appear before them?

  2. Doesn’t bother me. A “cold” opening seems quite appropriate for the subject matter!

  3. Depends on what happens in the next few pages, I suppose. If it continues right with the story being read, would be awkward. If it has a few years time-skip, yeah, works well.

    1. Exactly my thoughts

    2. Agreed, as long as these pages are a stand-alone prologue, they serve well to show just how great the art here is going to be. I would worry that this might be setting up that “oh, sorry, darling, your father died in an incredibly unlikely farm accident before you were old enough to remember him” bit of so-called character development that shows up too often in find-your-path fiction, but Novil is too good a writer for that.

      Please.

      1. Agreed with Graybeard and the others.

        1. Also agree.

  4. If the rifle is some kind of energy weapon (otherwise transparent parts would hardly be practical), it would likely not need such a massive buttstock. Cooling fins would be more logical.

    1. A glowy-special-stuff-powered gauss rifle or railgun might still have quite a bit of recoil.

      1. Depending on what kind of energy weapon, it might also have some kind of a kick. Less than a pure kinetic one, to be sure, but even a laser would have some kick (even if it’s not noticeable) and if it’s some sort of plasma weapon, it might well be noticeable.

There’s also the possibility that people realised that bracing a weapon against the shoulder with a stock was useful for stability and accuracy even if the kick isn’t all that significant.

          My thoughts, too.

        2. Well, it’s clearly not laser – barrel is too narrow to fit any useful focusing system. Charged particle gun is more possible, but it would probably require a shield around barrel to stop backscatter radiation.

      2. Wouldn’t railgun actually have even BIGGER recoil than traditional gun?

      3. The stock makes as much sense as the rest of it, it being a tacticool watergun.

    2. The stock also adds to the shooter precision and given the scope it is likely a weapon with a capacity of long-range precision. And a sturdy construction makes it more reliable in harsh conditions.

  5. Really love it. The idea of a late cover. First the set up of the premise and than the cover.
and really love the picture do you have a poster size (without the text)?

    1. Things like that will again be provided to our supporters at Patreon (or similar service).

  6. I really like the cover. Grown up Scarlet looks really nice! (Young Scarlet was reaaally cute by the way).
Strong, brave, practical, with a determined look in the eyes. She’s there!
Her outfit looks quite modern, more 20th century. Mixing the styles (the village looked more pre-industrial) is fine to me, as long as it is coherent. This kind of clothes could have been made by hand, after all (the jacket and gloves are probably leather). I really like her boots, who look exactly the kind of shoes a good adventurer in a cold climate needs. Strong, practical, boots to kick asses with. Yeah!

I like this “late cover”. Some webcomics (like sleeplessdomain) do that at every chapter, using one or two special panels to introduce elements of the world, some flashback scenes… which is exactly what we have here.

  7. I would rather see the cover first, it is a great ‘Hook’ to get the reader’s interest.

  8. Cover as third page is a classic. Showing adult Scarlet on it signals to the reader there’s a time jump coming.

  9. A quite energetic cover, in a double sense. Looks like she *is* the machine of eternal summer, with all the flowers she makes sprout and whatnot :))

    Cover looks very nice!!! 😀

  11. Real (i.e., paper) books routinely have as many as three “title pages,” with increasing levels of detail. One reason is to enable putting the copyright page before any of the actual content, for example. Therefore, I would suggest starting with a really boring title page, with just the title, not even your name, then the first two content pages, then the beautiful and detailed title page.

  12. By the way, because of the font you’re using on the title page, and specifically the fact that the “horizontal” strokes of the Z are actually diagonal, the string “RZ” in your name makes me think that it’s an “RR” ligature with the left edge of the second R left out. Is there an alternate Z in the font? You wouldn’t have to use it all the time, just after an R.

    1. P.S. Speaking of the font, I really like the strange ascenders and descenders in the R, H, and N characters, and the M in “Machine” is okay, but to my eye the Ms in “suMMer” really jump out like sore thumbs. That’s another place where I’d hope for an alternate form, or failing that, just a smaller type size.
