The Machine of Eternal Summer 014

  • Viola: And you, well, you never have any money. How will you ever be able to provide for a family if you can’t even provide for yourself?
  • Viola: Oh, Tibor, I wish it had turned out differently. But I gave you so many chances.
  • Viola: I still like you, I really do! But it just wasn’t meant to be. I hope you understand.
  • Tibor: … Yes, I understand.
  • Viola: All the best, Tibor.

Tibor, l think you just dodged a bullet.

    1. No, he didn’t. She is reasonable. Money IS needed to survive. You want to make family that would just die out of starvation? That’s just downright cruel.

Anyone who commodifies love will leave you at the drop of a hat the moment things start looking like you can’t live up to their expectations. And, more often than not, *they’re* the ones who end up being a financial drain.

        1. If you marry someone you don’t love because they have money, then that’s a problem. However, the vast majority will one way or another factor in money when they decide who to have a lasting relationship with. IRL, you’re more likely to win millions on a lottery than you are to find a woman who will take a man like Tibor if she’s able to attract men like Raymond.

        2. … actually, if you win a lottery, you MAY have chance 🙂

I get the impression that’s Viola’s only deciding factor. And that her definition of “provide for a family” is much more centered around *her* than the rest of the family.

        4. As I mentioned before – this is a pretty standard situation for pre-industrial societies. The concept of “marriage by love” – i.e. when family internal stability become the most important – is, essentially, a byproduct of industrial society.

        5. I have the impression that even if Viola likes Tibor, she is not deep in love with him (or not anymore), while she genuinely loves Raymond.
The “money” issue might be an excuse to drop him off nicely?

She likes or used to love Tibor for real, I think.
But she got tired of his promises of “I’ll get money soon!” (“I gave you so many chances” means that his money problems are old and recurrent), and started to frequent other people, and finally fell in love with someone else, who does not make promises he can’t keep.

I like how Raymond, as a true gentleman, let Viola hug her ex-boyfriend without frowning. That’s a respectful partner. Another reaction, like being angry at Tibor, would be stupid (he already has the advantage, Viola is clearly staying with him), but still.
That probably makes it harder for Tibor, since he can’t even say something bad about the “guy who stole his girlfriend” (who would have left anyway because of the money issue).
He really looks like “perfect new boyfriend that he would like to hate but he can’t because he is so nice”. 😉

  2. She’s a golddigger, but she has to look out for herself. We don’t know if humans and foxes can have babies on that world, but Viola can at least have a happy life.
Now, poor Tibor, ouch. Hope:0. He’ll need an outfit change out of Normal Person if he’s going to become a bandit. “That moment when all you have left is to get killed by the world’s cutest beet farmer.”

    1. Novil explained in the “setting” page that, yes, interspecies relations are fertile (the child’s type is random). There is a risk for a female fox carrying a wolf baby because of the size ratio that can be dangerous for the mother (that’s why female fox-male wolf couples are rare), but otherwise it is fine.

  3. … Aaaaand it immediately starts to rain. Figures.

(Yes, I know it’s just a graphical effect, but still…)

    1. I really like how the drawing put emphasis oh Tibor’s emotions. That’s really cute. I especially love the ear movement that depicts well his feelings.

      1. Tibor’ears: ***

        1. Sorry for the forgotten letter.
          Tibor’s ears: ***

  4. “But… I put a family into poverty for you!”

    1. I wonder, by the way, how much of the money he has left. Enough to pay her the restaurant, and probably more, since he was thinking of marriage…
What will he do with this money? Give it back to the farmers? He is supposed to become Scarlet’s friend at some point…

      1. Probably not actually enough to raise family. I mean, Scarlett’s family was comfortable, but not rich, and the money were likely their yearly income, not much higher than what they NEED for year.

  5. I really wonder what Tibor was thinking. How did he even think this was going to work? On top of what Viola said, he not too long ago robbed a family. I think he got into depth by making poor decisions rather than poor luck and frankly, he seems a like an awful person right now. I can’t say I fell the slightest sorry for him.

    1. Agreed, but kinda looks like the average citizen of this world may be a tad short in the brains department. Hopefully Scarlet is an exception, but her dad putting a year’s supply of Shards in one robbable basket did not strike me as brilliant either.

  6. And childs, is how I met your mother’s lover.
