[0752] Larisa’s World Of Science
└ posted on Thursday, 14 January 2016, by Novil
- Luna: Thomas, you were amazing! We’d never have won the game without you!
- Thomas: Hey, thanks, Luna.
- Luna: A friend gave me two front row tickets for the next Warriors game and I–
- Thomas: Wow, cool, the Warriors! They’re great! Who are you going with?
- Luna: I… I wondered if maybe you…?
- Thomas: You’d like to go to the game with me?
- Luna: Yes! That’d make me soooo happy!
- Thomas: Well, all right, then.
- Thomas: Sandra, do you have any idea why Luna wants to go to the Warriors game with me?
- Sandra: Probably because she likes you.
- Thomas: Huh, you think?!
- Sign: Larisa’s World of Science
- Larisa: That’s all, folks! I hope you enjoyed today’s episode with the topic “The World’s densest materials”.
- Label: Lead
- Label: Gold
- Label: Uranium
- Label: Boys
for what it’s worth- studies suggest that girls and women aren’t actually more perceptive, just more less likely to be turned down if they put the moves on someone who didn’t really think of them that way before.
End of storyline?
I’d say he’s one of the DENSER boys around. Some girls are too subtle when it comes to giving signals.
Don’t know who’s more dense, guys for being unable to pick up on the signals girls are sending them, or girls for after thousands of generations worth of human interaction still not having learned that dudes need the direct approach rather than subtle “signals”.
Wait, didn’t he have, like, all good grades?
Yeah, I know that they don’t necessarily mean you’re smart, but still… this is over the top!
MaxArt wrote:
He’s also an athlete (polite way of saying jock), who spends more time focusing on keeping his grades up to continue playing the sport he loves. This is why girls are mysteries to guys like him, and the male populace in general.
Not all boys are dense. Now, if we’re talking about the densest object in any universe, that’s Ash Ketchum.

Hay its not his fault he gets amnesia at the beinging of every season.
Larisa, you forgot to include Osmium in your ranking, although I presume you’d still rate “Boys” as denser than that.
Well… that really reminds me of some Japanese romantic manga… several of them at that…
“Huh, you think?!” is missed from the script below the image. And it is a wrong line anyway, shouldn’t it be something like “That cannot be! Can it?”
Larisa was right then. The T-shirt was too subtle in the end.
@ Trimutius:
“Huh, you think?” is not a wrong line. It’s a colloquial way of speaking.
Do you think a teenager would speak “That cannot be! Can it?”
Since the comic is expressing direct dialog, it doesn’t need to be in Shakespearean grammatical level…
I like Sandra’s expression in panel 6.
And he still missed the t-shirt. Now that is dense.
@ MaxArt:
High Intelligence does not necessary mean high wisdom.
@ JustARandomPerson:
I meant it in a different way… If you want to sound like teenager sure… “No way! Is it even possible?”
Is this better?
smell my butt!!!
So… Was the shirt too subtle or not? Am I missing something?
Who’s more foolish? The fool or the fool who keeps trying subtlety? Buy Custom T-shirts today!
“Understanding girls” is a concept that’s easy to dismiss once you realize that everyone is different. There are some areas of psychology that are common to most human beings, and the rest comes down to the personal experiences of an individual due to the culture and surroundings in which they were raised. You will never “understand girls” any more than you will “understand guys,” so focus your efforts on getting to know the specific people you care about understanding, and everything will be fine (unless one of them turns out to be maladjusted to society, which is always an unfortunate possibility).
Could be worse- they’re not as dense as tungstun.
Any man with sufficient experience of the distaff side can tell you that the requisites of maintaining a male/female relationship are two:
(1) The guy has got to learn how to simulate a sense of empathy. This is utterly beyond our emotional and mental capacities, so it’s a hard slog to pretend that we really give a damn about other people’s feelings.
(2) The gal has to fake a sense of humor. Reciprocal ditto.
This comic gets weirder each time another part is posted.
Next, we have the most unstable materials! Is a pregnant woman more unstable than Francium? Stay tuned to find out!
@ maarvarq:
QGP (quark–gluon plasma) would work too. 😛
I now expect to see the German version the last panel with a storyline were they attend a party, get horribly drunk, and are therefore “dicht” in the German sense 😀
It is kindof a silly joke playing on stereotypes. But to be fair, I don’t know why we view high school males as being hyped up on testosterone that want to have sex with everything. Testosterone doesn’t peak until 19-21 years of age and its a pretty steep face going up the 15-19 side. From what I have seen a high school boy is a lot more likely to look without being discreet but is unlikely to think anything of it.
High school boys have studies and sports and hobbies and friends, a lot of things that are more important to them than going to awkward dances that only the girls seem to enjoy. To be honest dating pre-college is a waste of time, its awkward, it has rules, it has parents poking in, what is chivalry?, Is kissing too far? is touching shoulders too far? Stessful.
As I said before, cluelessness is a male secondary sex characteristic. It goes along with facial hair, broader shoulders, etc. Unfortunately unlike other characteristics it is NOT attractive to the female sex.
..that was a lot of build up for a pun
Highly inaccurate.
The gap between Uranium and Boys is way too small.
I think if a girl had done that with me in high school, I would have been at least as clueless as Thomas. In fact, I might still be that dense when it comes to girls liking me today.
No, that’s pretty much it.
@ Meh:
You’d think they’d learn, huh?
Well while I normally would try to defend that…we are pretty stupid sometimes when a girl likes us.
Having been catfished A LOT in HS senior year, I know it gets real easy for a guy to dismiss any advances as just another mirage. It took years afterward for me to get enough experience to finally decode the one or two girls that were probably for realsies. Too late, oh well.
For the record, I’ve always picked up on subtlety. Sometimes a little too well. People think that I’m reading their minds when, really, I’m just reading their body language and gauging their expressions to get a better understanding of what they’re saying and what they actually WANT to say. Then again, it doesn’t come in as handy as you’d think.
@ Onihikage:
Well said! People are people after all. Gender and sex have nothing to do with one’s approach towards another person.
When they said Warriors game, I couldn’t be the only one thinking of NBA right?
Curry aint gonna be the only thing getting hot at that game.
As a guy myself, all I can say is:
I RESENT THAT!!!
Ouch! So hard to see the truth written out for once. This hurts…
Izek Miller wrote:
I have to say there were several times girls flirted with me that I only noticed afterwards. Which somehow made me have a bad conscience because some of them were really nice.
She even wore the shirt…
@ Jumtrev:
Ichika Orimura from ‘Infinite Stratos’ would like to challenge your claim about ‘the densest object in any universe’.
@ PaladinVII:
I thought the exact same. Maybe the T-shirt should have specified a specific Thomas.
Also way to go Novil with using 3/4 of the strip for story development everyone likes and still managing to create a funny pun out of this single strip!
Am I the only one wondering why lead is in there? I mean, it’s below 10 g/cm³; is it because it’s so abundant? Tungsten would seem a much more natural choice…
But maybe I’m just proving the strip right by thinking about the wrong issue. ;D
Well the problem is that the girls assumed he’d look at her chest – which he didn’t do once in these panels.
As a chemist, this made me laugh loudly!
Kudos to Thomas for immediately asking one of Luna’s female friends for clarification, rather than just wandering off or just telling his male friends he had a ticket to the Warriors game without even mentioning Luna.
And I think it’s very sweet that he *doesn’t* make assumptions about Luna’s feelings. This is middle school. Kids are just figuring out how to communicate at all with other people.
How did Larisa get hold of so much uranium??
maarvarq & Vandroiy, glad to see I’m not the only “metals nerd” here. ^_^
Hopefully that’s Depleted Uranium Larisa has there, wouldn’t want her
getting her hands on any Uranium-235. :-O
I don’t know if it’s a matter of boys being “dense”, just that males can be
conditioned to be a bit skeptical and doubt that a female is serious. If
you’ve ever seen a female act in a hostile manner towards a male that
expresses an interest in her and over generalize a bit…well…it can be
a bit hard to believe they could be interested in you. Also they are junior
high age, an age at which both genders can be a bit flaky, which if you
see enough of that around you you’ll eventually start thinking everyone
is a bit flaky and having doubts about their motives.
Thrawcheld wrote:
You can actually buy (small quantities) of depleted Uranium online (in at least one country
that I know of), maybe she has a network of buyers working for her… 😉 I was rather surprised
when I found this out, I’m not sure what individuals buy it other than “element collectors” as
it’s not a particularly workable metal to make into anything and you sure as hell don’t want
to grind it down and get a bunch of Uranium dust in the air that you are about to breath in.
Although U-238 won’t sustain a chain reaction like U-235 it is still radioactive enough to
be dangerous.
Actual Fissile material, U-235, is much more tightly controlled. ^_-
