[0802] The Divine Comedy: Cover
└ posted on Monday, 11 July 2016, by Novil
For the first time, a story arc comes with its own cover page. There are currently no plans for future story arcs with a separate cover page. But I wanted one for this story arc and I am very pleased with the result. It is inspired by Domenico di Michelino’s famous illustration for Dante’s “Divine Comedy”. The story arc itself, though, is very loosely based on Goethe’s “Faust”, and not at all on Dante’s “Divine Comedy”.
- Title: THE DIVINE COMEDY
- Stamp: Someone dies in this story!
- Cast: Starring: LARISA, the DEVIL, THOMAS J. GOD, GANESHA, SEEOAHTLAHMAKASKAY, SANDRA, CLOUD, LUNA, and many more!
Well this ought to be interesting. Looks pretty comedic for a story somebody dies in.
@ Xezlec:
Well Adam and Eve died… Eventually…
Poor Devil. He’s going down.
Excellent!
@ Rosebud:
Totally what I was thinking. Deal with the devil ain’t got nothing on crossing Larisa. She know’s fire better than hell.
Hmmm.
Dies for 20 seconds and is brought back from the brink?
Dies Game of Thrones style?
Dies as an innocent bystander to one of Yuna’s/Larissa’s creations?
Dies due to divine meddling?
Dyes everyone’s shirt red and the cover is a typo?
At first glance I thought “Sandra, the Devil” was going to be in this arc, thanks to misreading the tags.
Nice! Is it going to be written in terza rima?
Nel mezzo del cammin di Sandra and Woo,
finiron presso ad una porta oscura
ché la foresta era bruciata giù
Ahi! Quanto a dir come fu è cosa dura
Larisa aveva in mano un lanciafiamme
e disse: “Ancor più fuoco: è troppo scura”
btw, why isn’t the Devil a three-mouthed winged beast frozen in the middle of an ice lake?
Larisa and the Devil should be swapped.
Wow.
I’m both excited and worried for this!
Psh you guy aren’t getting it. The devil isn’t trying to screw Larisa. He’s obviously offering her a very nice position with a large signon bonus in his army because he recognizes her talents and doesn’t want to risk anyone else snatching her up when she’s finished her training: a.k.a. death.
No way can someone die in a cute comic like this. Or if they do, they get resurrected shortly afterwards.
Oh wait a second, this is a webcomic in which cute talking animals eat each other, unlike zootopia, and in which cute pre-teen girs have sex offstage. So maybe people can die.
On the gripping hand, would we be told if it was not going to be a tease?
I’m tempted to do some research but don’t want the arc to potentially be spoiled.
Or would reading up on “Faust” make more sense?
Great cover page.
I see heavy construction vehicles, Larisa, the Devil, and I have no idea what this is going to be about. 🙂
I also can’t decide if I should research Faust. It’s possible there will be references that people familiar with the story would really enjoy, maybe a different take(or pun) on something in the story. However, spoilers are also possible.
I’m guessing the death will be of a minor character introduced within this story arc. Better not be any of Woo’s kits, though we know Seeoahtlahmakaskay would severely punish Novil if that happens.
Wait, didn’t Sandra maybe sell her soul to the devil back in 2009? http://www.sandraandwoo.com/2009/06/25/0071-how-not-to-deal-with-the-devil/
My guess is… everyone dies? Devil may be technically immortal, but can he survive death of universe in the end?
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen the “someone dies in this story” stamp somewhere before, and it was an out-and-out lie used for the sake of some sort of commentary.

Good point. Very good point. Wonder if it’s better then Novil’s memory…
I really hope this isn’t going to be a story arc that just constantly mocks my beliefs. I’ve always practiced tolerance and respecting ones right to speech but several comics (I can’t remember any name) have just outwardly and relentlessly attacked Christianity. I tried sticking through those but a guy can only take so much. I’ll give this the benefit p the doubt just like the others. Judging from its past I highly doubt my fears have any solid grounding and I’m actually looking forward to this arc!
Faust eh? She going to be offered a (shorter than normal) life free of Wolfram’s in exchange for her soul, isn’t she?

I don’t know, the commentators had quite the discussion whether drinking the glass would be required to accept damnation. And then there’s the ‘Woo put it there’ theory. 😉
Great discussion until the insurance ads showed up…
The Devil is Doomed.
Nice art work. Some random observations: The devil is dressed like Steve Jobs, who is dead and was considered devilishly clever businessman (and an a-hole). And is is coincidence that it says “Someone dies” and Woo is nowhere to be seen? He’s not even mentioned in the cast listing, which is odd, considering he’s the co-star. As for Goethe, I must’ve been Faust asleep during that part of class.
I just noticed … Woo isn’t even featured as a starring role …
Ruh roh.
PS: It is -Angra Mainyu- Lucy-Fern, what is the worst that could happen?

It is based upon Dantes’ Inferno and Faust, two extremely Christian stories. If you find it mocking then you probably need to turn down the sensitivity, mate.
$20 bet on the Devil being the one who dies.
We secretly replaced the water in those super-soakers with Holy water. Let’s see what happens!
Someone dies, yes.
But does someone come back to life?
@ Rosebud:
Or…maybe he’s being replaced?
@ Xellos:
Beat me to it.
Or Larisa is trying to get a cure to her Disease. Remember SHE HAS A EARLY EXPIRATION DATE
Landon would make such a great Gretchen.
So who is going to be Virgil to Larisa’s Dante?
@ Veyraa:
One of the strong points of Christianity is that everyone is *encouraged* to have their own version of it. Free to believe in a horns-and-contracts devil that’s not exactly Bible canon, etc. Free to be as offended or chill at deviations from their own head canon as they like.
Two things:
One, it says someone dies. It doesn’t say the deceased is a recurring character or plot-important at all.
Two, You’re not fooling anybody, Cloud. We know you challenged her to a water gun fight so her shirt would get wet…
The Devil is doing a great mistake.

We were never shown her drinking it, so maybe not.
Pretty sure it’s the devil who dies.
So, since Larisa is descendant of the snake from the Paradise… This is basically her making a deal with her grandgrandgrandgrandgrandpa? Or, if she’s just a little older than she looks, her grandpa… Probably not dad…
OH NO! Poor Sid.
I recently started reading this, though an English translation. I’m halfway through Inferno at the moment.
Larisa: Yes, Mr. Satan, I thought you’d be pleased with the terms of my offer. Here’s a pen you can use to sign it.

Perhaps the deal is to remove her Wolfram’s and heart.
So Landon didn’t make it to the main cast list?
Disappointed.
So, someone is going to die? The question is, will someone who had a strong presence previously in this comic get written out?
Obviously we’re meant to assume that it is the Devil that dies in this story for bwahaha reasons
@ Morbid Mobius:
That’s what I was thinking. Maybe even a full-length “normal” life. Such a deal would tell you exactly how well Larissa is coping with her condition below the surface. Assuming the strip isn’t mostly the Devil just trying t convince Larissa he exists…
I hope that stamp isn’t referring to the main characters…
are we sure that larissa isn’t just a kid being POSSESSED by the devil the whole time? because honestly, that was my theory…anyhow, this ought to be interesting! I bet she is somehow going to fool the devil, or at least she’s going to piss him off by signing her contract with “Suck it, red guy!” instead of her name. I’m curious!
