What the hell… pitchfork? Definitely not very likely place for predators to be… (I do acknowledge that raccoons are everywhere, after living for years in Toronto)
Meh, we get bobcats pretty often in the midwest. A sighting usually doesn’t end well for the bobcat, though.
Ahh Canada, where we only get wolves, moose, and the occasional fisher
Gotta say, I’m having a hard time reconstructing the orientation in that last frame. Shouldn’t there be part of a head visible?
@ Brett Bellmore:
My guess is that it’s tearing through his upper torso. the hand you see is his right hand and the puff of fur you see next to it his his head. The blade entered by his left shoulder and exits by his right ribcage.
I am very shocked by the things that are occurring. A pitchfork? Really? Is bleeding to death really that hard to do that impalement is necessary?

Dude, you complain a lot about the story and how it’s being told.
It’s Novil’s story to tell. If you don’t like how it’s being told you have THOUSANDS of other webcomics to choose from.
He gives us this story for free. You really don’t have room to complain.
Well, this doesn’t bode well for a certain bobcat!
Someone can prepare his funerals when Woo and Lilly will hear of this.

You know what, you’re a very nice person.
Remember what curse Lily had Seahtomakasakay or whatever lay on the one who harms the cubs?? That bobcat is in BIG trouble!
I’m pretty sure it’s the pitchfork that’s in trouble

I hope he is going to be ok 🙁
Well, that got dark really fast. And judging from the fact that we see the leftmost point of the pitchfork enter the left shoulder, I don’t want to imagine where the other two points just went in. I’m hoping that little racoons can just fit in between. Otherwise, the fans will revolt.

Yes, he has room to complain. Right here in the comments. If you don’t agree with him, that’s fine, you have thouands of other comment’s to read anywhere on the internet. I am deeply thankful for Novil giving out this comic for free and I certainly wouldn’t think I was entiteled to demand anything from him or be in any position to tell him how to do his comic, but I’m sick and tired of narrow minded trigger-happy fanboys and fangirls who jump at anyone who dares to utter some criticism, with nothing but the ever same argument: It’s free, therefore it must be perfect and you are not allowed to utter anything but praise, otherwise we tell you to go away in shame. An author who establishes a comment section expects – among other things – feedback, and that includes constructive criticism.
On topic: I am certainly not squeamish, but I’m also a little shocked to see such a graphic brutal killing of a cute character (and a child! Well, not really a child, since he is a raccoon, but we have seen him talkig and acting much like a human child) in a PG 12 cartoon. Novil has been showing the more ugly side of nature several times and touched some borderline topics for a cartoon that is featuring children and aiming at least partially at a young audience, but this is really brutal and comes pretty much out of nowhere. I mean, I expect blood and gore when watching the Walking Dead or Game of Thrones, but here it is really somewhat shocking. No, I won’t go away and cry now and I still love this comic, but I can totally see the original commentator’s point.
Remember, this kid was blessed by the raccoon god, and I’m pretty sure that wound wouldn’t be fatal on it’s own. It seems to be a stable right through the top of his breast through to the bottom. Wednesday will tell us more.
@ someguy:
Well, Arcturus may not be dead. We won’t know till next comic.
That got dark quickly!
Where does the strip go from here?
Someone is in deep s***, either the bobcat or the idiot who left the pitchfork lying like that.
Does that help Arcturus?
Seeoahtlahmakaskay promised divine retribution — but not that the kits would lead charmed lives.
I wouldn’t put a death past Novil. Not saying it’ll happen, but it could.
A tragedy (or near tragedy) might remind Lily that life in the wild is dangerous. Pet raccoons live much longer than feral ones. She might reconsider her options and ask that Sandra take in the rest of Woo’s family.

Well, you’re entitled to your opinion, as is oledakaajel. You aren’t however, entitled to call me a ‘trigger happy fanboy’. You also rather seriously attack me personally.
I don’t have any complaint about a civil critique of the comic itself; I leave lots of them myself here and on other comics. I agree with you that this is one of the functions of the comments section.
My read of oledakaajel’s comment felt more like an attack on Novil rather than the comic, and in that case I might have overstepped.
oledakaajel’s reply was that “I was a nice person”— now, he might have meant it sarcastically— I hope not, because I really WAS trying to be nice about it— but you resorting to name-calling and criticizing me personally certainly isn’t and I don’t appreciate it.
oledakaajel, please take my comment as merely a reminder that we DO get this comic as a gift and to keep your criticism focused and constructive.
Some Guy, try to keep it civil next time, mmkay?
@ All-Purpose Guru:
Sorry, something horrifying happened to the nested quote, for those interested please scroll up, as I can’t edit the previous posting.
The pitchfork is going through his left shoulder, coming out under his clavicle. Not a death blow less it his an artery or he doesn’t get aid soon. There’s only really muscle there.
Woooow… Get rekt scrubcoon
@ Megabyite:
As well as lynx, bears, wolverines, coyotes
Ain’t that a light colored paw with no blood or fur connected to that raccoon. Somebody dove in front of that pitchfork
I’m not ok with this…
I forsee an emergency trip to the veterinarian via Sandra and Dad!
Wait. Blood and gore in a Sandra And Woo comic?? This might not be the first time blood is shown but it is sure as heck one of the first time it is depicted in such way(especially for a kit)
You know, for kids 😀
Guys, as terryfying and grimdark it is for us to see such a brutal attack on a beloved character, after closer inspection its not as bad as it looks:
Panel 1: Bobcat pounces on unsuspecting Arcturus, which only Vega notices as she is facing it.
Panel 2: Bobcat grabs/bites Arcturus by the BACK of his neck, not on the back itself or even the whole neck, puling him backwards. So no danger of breaking the neck yet.
Panel 3: In a great display of bravery and defiance, Arcturus manages to retaliate, seemingly reaching backward to scrape the cat’s nose while Vega is paralyzed with fear.
Panel 4: with his nose bloodied or scrapped, the bobcat seemingly throws Arcturus over the hedge, probably angry and frustrated at the defiance.
Panel 5: Arcturus goes over the hedge, seemingly falling towards an upended pitchfork.
Panel 6: I can’t be sure where the stab goes through, but at least it’s not through the head.
So while brutal and definitely shocking to most of us, let us not jump the gun yet and grab OUR pitchforks and point at Novil. He has a story to tell, and so far in the 3 years I followed Sandra and Woo, he RARELY disappoints, and the few disappointments are far and few in between.
Hang on guys, restrain the pitchforks for now.
@ All-Purpose Guru:
Oh phah, (s)he was being reasonably polite and reasonable critisisim is one of the good things about the internet and a comments section and we would be a bad audience if we were just yesmen. Unreasonable criticism is of course a problem but that’s not what that was. I suppose it could have been better but so could everything.
Here come those who “think of the children!”
@ Megabyite:
We also got geese. Don’t screw with geese.
from the looks of it the left tine of the fork went through the skin of the shoulder, and missed the ribcage. but I’m worried that the middle tine, depending on the size of his head, and the space between the tines, either barely missed his head. Or he now has a tine through his skull or spine.
And now we have a cliff hanger till midweek.
I knew it. Last week, I said “OK, one of them is gonna die”, Novil likes showing the ugly sides of nature far too much and he knows that most kits don’t survive to reach adulthood. The really shocking thing will be to see the two parents move on extremely quickly and forget they even lost a kit.
I think this comic is a good illustration of the simple fact that this comic strip series is not specifically meant for kids.
It’s an unfortunate fact of life that kids do have to deal with violence, including the fact that violence in nature is the norm, not the exception.
Far more important than the violence is how the protagonists handle it. The following strips in this arc are therefore going to be more important than this one in teaching readers, including children, how to react to violence or unexpected injury.
Well, that was certainly a PIERCEing comic! My my, that Bobcat sure got the jump on such SHARP kids!
Dead child pun.
@ Pax:
Dude. That was in extremely poor taste…
Andy Wong wrote:
In panel 3 it looks to me like Arcturus is on his back, and that’s how he’s retaliating. My guess is the bobcat threw him to the ground after grabbing him by the back of the neck, and is attempting to bite his belly.
In panel 5, there’s a glint off the left-most tine of the pitchfork, but this could be a bit of a red herring. The tine piercing Arcturus could be the right-most tine. If that tine stabs him through the left shoulder, then his head and whole body would miss the other two tines. Still not great for poor Arcturus, but much, much better than if it’d been the left-most tine.
Please be a nightmare be Lily.
Hang in there Arcturus! Keep fighting! Vega, get help!
Poor Vega, everyone seems to have forgotten that you are also there getting traumatized. And this time, it’s a true life and death situation right before your eyes unlike before where your parents are around. Hope she’ll forgive herself after this incident, no matter what happens.
Somehow, judging by the seriousness of this strip (awesome drawing Novil depicting the violence that has all of us in knots), I don’t think Ruth will come save the day this time. Most likely will have some drama similar to when Woo went to see Lily after having a premonition, then also getting hurt in the same arc.
Hopefully Woo and Lily will be able to fight off the bobcat even without divine intervention.
Hmmm, looks like the person who left the pitchfork has his own field. I’m worried that bobcat/lynx is already lurking near the field. It might have been hungry and couldn’t find a good hunting spot in its natural habitat due to some sort of situation such as Ruth being the apex predator or something else.
And, as for what would happen after… I’m kind of expecting angry Lily and the foreshadowed divine retribution. Or I expect a certain squirrel being ruthless to the bobcat/lynx.
But, even if it’s less likely to happen, I’m even expecting more scarier than any of both above.
Woo. Expert. Mode.
Well… I always liked this Comic (even though it seems to concentrate too much on ‘other characters’ instead of Sandra AND Woo lately)… but I do somewhat dislike it when ‘total happiness’ is turned into ‘total disaster & sorror’ in the blink of an eye. I already complained when Sid’s squirrel-mom was killed by a truck, because she looked so totally happy and Content when she jumped from tree branch to tree branch just a few strips earlier. It’s just kinda sad, and kinda mean to the readers…
Don’t kill the little ones. :c
Razel wrote:
Actually, a field is a perfectly normal place for a bobcat to hunt. They’re opportunistic generalists and readily take to fields to hunt mice, rabbits, grasshoppers, and birds. This bobcat just happened to find some raccoon kits, which would also be a typical prey item.

ok, thats 40 years of torment in the 9th circle of hell for this bobcat.

If it wasn’t evil (by definition) I’d say: poor bobcat… I bet it didn’t know whose kits it just harmed…
@ All-Purpose Guru:
Sorry if you feel insulted, IMHO the wording “trigger happy fanboy” is not a swearword, but just a fairly accurate (though admittedly pointed) description of what you did, it’s not like I’d have called you and idiot or something like that, so no namecalling intended. I might have gotten carried a way a little, because I’ve seen comments like yours frequently also on other webcomics (particularly LICD and LFG), where they try to smother any type of critical discussion, thus such comments have become a pet peeve of mine. My reaction may have been over the top if you are not one of the guys who dish out such comments on a regular basis.
