- Hotel owner: She’s not at the gas station, Madam.
- Mother: Where could she be??!
- Mia: Mommy!
- Mother: Mia!!
- Biker: My friend found her checking out our bikes.
I saw you driving away, so we tried to catch up.
- Biker: See you, kiddo! And remember the awesome sign!
- Mia: Awesome sign!
- Biker: Let’s roll, guys!
- Mother: Thanks…
I got teary eyes after reading this…
I ride a motorcycle and, while I don’t exactly LOOK like them (many who ride do) I really appreciate the balanced view. Thanks!!!!!!
And the moral of the story is…..
Never judge a biker by his moustache.
Those bikers are awesome. ‘Nuff said.
Great little story. I wonder how she forgot her daughter? That woman is a terrible mom.
On an unfortunate side note, kids at my sister’s school seem to think how that biker’s doing the “awesome sign” means devil (thumb out rep. tail). I think that is stupid; that is and always will be the proper way to do the awesome sign.
Ah, well. These are the kinds of kids that invented the cootie shot. *shrugs*
@ FuRrY321:
She was panicked. She’d left her girl in the car, asleep, and gone into the store quickly, and gotten out just as quickly because of her fear of the burly, moustachioed men. She should’ve checked to see if her daughter was there and okay, but it’d be just as unlikely that her girl would’ve gotten out and wandered off. Child-locks on car doors are pretty damn common.
what a nice bunch of scary biker dudes, give those soldiers a medal
To me it means “Rock on” or “Awesome” I heart this interpretation.
Contrary to an apallingly popular belief, most truly macho men are generally polite and chivalrous. It is the loud and boisterous minority that ruin it for the rest of us.
that big guy was just hulk hogan’s long lost twin brother anyway so we know where that would’ve wound up.
@ FuRrY321:
They don’t call it “the devil horns” for nothing. Still, while it may mean “rock on” to some, that’s still the common name for the gesture.
That handsign, (two fingers up like horns and the thumb sticking out) means “I love you” in Swedish sign language, so yeah its a awsome sign 😉 While the thumb being tucked in under the other two fingers that are not sticking up, means “Devil” heh, hard to distinct at times…
Ahhh me, I LOVE comics like this…..and things like this do happen. I and a bunch of my cousins went with our Grandmother and my mother to the store. They left the store without me, (you try keeping nine hyperactive munchkins straight) and a large bluff gentleman with a pickup offered to take me home. They were already turned around and heading back to get me when we caught up to them.
I’m American, and was taught the thumb up version is sign for ‘I love you” as well.
How sweet! It’s the “we aren’t all bad” plot device 😀
As a big, fat, bearded, beer-loving biker, I approve of this comic :).
@ FuRrY321:
In actuallity the Hand Sign means “I love You”. The “Devil Horns sign” is index finger out, little finger out and thumb in. When the thumb is out, it means “I love you”. Easy misconception. But the fact of the matter is that sign mean I love You whether you agree or not. A fact is a Fact
😛
Having met a multitude of big, burly bikers that were actually teddy bears, I wasn’t surprised by the end of this comic. XD
Now that was a nice touch. When it turns out that a stereotype like character isn’t like that at all it just warms my heart… plus I have a laugh cuz it IS funny ya know. X3
Again tell Powree to keep up the good work. 😉
@ MrGBH:
😮 Well, he doesn’t have a goatee, so he’s probably not evil… right?
Well, down in the Southern US, the thumb in means “Hook em Horns” and is a sign used by University of Texas fans. We often joke that some of our Sicilian coworkers from Europe would faint at a UT game. Among Americans of that extraction, it has a different, less positive meaning.
Texas A&M students and alumni do think it is a sign of the devil. 😉
@ MrGBH:
Amen-
@ Ramon:
At least in American Sign Language. 😉
@ Tigger:
This is also true in American Sign Language – the pinky is “i” then the other two are “L” and pinky and thumb out is “y” – I Love You.
Wow…my mother told me one about a very similar experience. Granted, no young children were involved, but still the same basis, about genuine kindheartedness from people with an almost identical image.
Awww,I weept a little bit when I saw that last strip.
Looks can be betraying.
My dad knew some motorcyclists, apparently some of which were Hell’s Angels. According to him, although the Hell’s Angels do some criminal things, they try to keep innocent people out of it. They also are fiercely protective of kids
Anyways, this comic was great
About the Awesome Sign – I beliebe a symbol by itself holds no power. It’s the meaning people put on them that makes them powerfull. I mean, if you were to show a swastika to someone before the 2º GW, people wouldn’t mind at all, or say it was a budist symbol (even though theirs is a little different). So the Awesome Sign is only “from the devil” if you mean it that way – if you don’t, then, what the fuck, don’t forget the Awesome Sign!!! 😀
I would think most roughneck bikers would actually do something like this … they’re all soft in the middle once you’re past the armoured shell 😀 … I sorta saw this third panel coming, but wasn’t sure entirely how it would pan out.
(the above sentences to be taken in the most positive possible way, btw)
That “awesome sign” looks to be halfway between the horns and the shaka. Strange combination. Maybe it’s an exhortation to hang loose WHILST rocking on?
I love it when the big tough macho guys turn out to be nice in stories. It’s heartwarming.
Oh, and just because she didn’t check to see if her daughter was there that one time doesn’t mean she’s a bad parent. We all make mistakes sometimes; the problem is when they have big consequences, like this one almost did. After a close call like this she’ll be checking all the time I bet.
Thats how REAL bikers are. Gang or no gang, every biker is like that. Including me.
awesome story
this should be on full story
@ Taolan:
Heck, even us loud, boisterous ones ain’t all bad. Just sayin’.
I’m a biker and I approve this message 😀 I think most of us do.
With this, everything you see and learn can be different than you realized.
metalheads: most misunderstood people ever. very helpfull yet we are seen as antisocial assholes. during a concert i lost my celphone, metalheads helped me find it. btw: im’s a metalhead!!!
LOL AT THE AWESOME SING!! gotta start young with them.
I couldn’t ever imagine the sheer panic of loosing a child like that…
I have plenty of bikers in my family– Big bearded men, women with little children, cousins of all types… and so I find this comic very rewarding. I definitely approve.
😀
No sarcasm intended, i’d cry if it wasn’t so short.Your ability to story tell is great. im glad i accidentally found this wesite.
A friend of my parents was once robbed by a well-dressed trustworthy-looking man. She was sitting in her car crying afterwards when a big biker guy came up. She thought it would happen all over again, but he was really a nice guy. He asked what happened and if she was alright, and even helped out with getting the police on the scene.
Just goes to show that this comic holds a lot of truth.
I think the mother has learnt a valuble lesson here: Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.
For a moment there I thought you were gonna be as prejudicious as the worst of internet. But I should never have doubted you! This beautiful ending brought tears to my eyes. Sandra and Woo still gets to be the comic with the prettiest ideals I have ever read ^^
@ Taolan: Big, Burly, polite men with mustaches. See, bikers are the present day Round Table knights if they’re like this.
@ Taolan:
I wonder what the Theme bike was that the little girl was looking at? You rock Senior! GO OCC!
This is actually generally the case, me and my mates turned up at a pub on the bikes, and this lady saw us and hurried inside after husband and clutched his arm and wispered something to him, should have seen her face when i held the door for her on the way back out.
I find a lot of people who are… hmm… “blatantly non-conformist” are actually really nice folks.
Conversely, I have found a truly frightening number of the people who dress like and see themselves embodiments of rules, conformity and enforcement thereof, to be sadistic, cruel, and thoroughly hypocritical in regard to obeying the rules and regulations they get their kicks hurting other people for breaking.
@ FuRrY321:
She’s not forgot her daughter, simply believe the girl still sleeping in the car, and not check it before go to the Hotel (maybe she feel uncomfortable herself because meeting the rockers).
I allways believed the riders are more kind, than they looks like.
Nice twist ending.;}

As a biker, a Texan, a rocker and all-around human being, I too appreciate and approve this message. I don’t know ANY of my motorcycling brethren who would do anything less than what those fellows did – none I’d spend any time around, anyhoo. Thank you for reminding non-riders that we are NOT the villains the cops and the media too often make us out to be.
And thanks for writing a really fun strip, in general. I’m new to the party, but I’m enjoying myself so far. Shalom!
Looking at these guys i can’t help but remembered two bikers from Kikujirō no Natsu (菊次郎の夏). The fat one and the slim one ended up being a kind-hearted ones, while the violence and betrayal came from a good-looking people.
Reminds me of the story I heard regarding a large number of bikers who helped out after the Joplin, Missouri tornado…seems a certain sect of nut-jobs from KS wanted to march with signs approving of what had just happened and these bikers basically formed a barricade around the city and implied that the nut job group was not welcome and to go away. As several others mentioned earlier in the comments I momentarily thought the ending was going to go the other way, and I am very happy that I was wrong.
