- Ivan: Why, thank you.
- Larisa: So why do you always paint such depressing, butt-ugly pictures?

ah, larisa.
Novil, is that you?
Are you Ivan?
Because if you are, you look pretty down. :[
Ivan looks like he’s gonna cry. 🙁
I thought Ivan usually does abstract art. This picture looks rather like a landscape – a lifeless one, though, maybe a decayed city. (I guess I fell for a Rorschach-like test. I’d like to know what others see in the picture)
I wonder, is Ivan Larissa’s step dad? it seems like in western movie/comic that step dads usually called by their name rather than dad or father.
Also the painting, it hid the true meaning of terrible secret of the old ones, unknown to his family, he fought the old ones at night and seal them on his painting. That’s why his painting is so dark and gloomy. Rumor say that people that saw the pic at certain hours and certain date and the star alignment is right they will see the true horror behind the paintings and went mad.
Of course it was just a bullshit I made, but hey, nothing say awesome than a weak painter that defeat Cthulhu and the gang in secret.

How do you know that? Is he mentioned somewhere earlier in the webcomic? I´ve read it all from strip one and I don´t recall his name or face…
@ Cv:
He was only mentioned before. Ivan is Larisa’s dad, and it was his website that Larisa’s super hero movie went on.
Sandra and Woo’s universe is actually in monochrome, and only paintings that had colours, it means that Sandra and Woo’s universe painters had this special power to reach to the forbidden zone never meant to be known by people (in that universe).
So, all coloured comics in Sandra and Woo comic is actually Ivan’s paintings. Ivan is like a combination of Gandalf, Loki, Sandman, the Specter, and Lord of Time combined into one.
This wild mass guessing is brought to you by Tinfoil Hat Inc.
That’s rich coming from her.
After all, it’s in colour.
Damn, Ivan kinda looks like me
or I look like Ivan
one of the two…?
That piece looks like a Monet. From what I can tell, it looks like he is painting gallows in front of a Medieval castle at dusk.
@ IndigoRei:
He just has a sunken in face. Kind of imagined he would look like this….weird.
@ JA_of_MN:
I was just talking about the last panel. In the others he just looks like he needs sleep.
Also, the painting looks (to me) like an office building after an earthquake or a fire.
Larisa, EVERYONE knows that great art is depressing. Right?
To me it looks like ancient ruins with the light of dawn slowly filtering in over the horizon. But that’s just me. Larisa would probably prefer bright chaotic splashes of color and tons of violence and gore.
Oh yeah, Larisa calls her parents by their first names, not mom and dad. Completely slipped my mind.
@ Cv:
Ivan is Larisa’s father. It says so in the list of characters and their descriptions.
well guys…you can kill me and all but…I look at Ivan and I see that Tsukishima guy from bleach…something in their eyes..like…a very depressing look…
…wait a second…. there is color on the canvas but, not on his brush…. inconceivable, yet remarkably amazing
i see what ya meen, he looks similar just without the blond hair….or hollow killing hooked sword that ways people down
@ Deko:
Trolling is really an ART.
Okay…. I don’t get t. What’s the joke? Also who the hell is this guy? Her father? Sorry I have to ask, it’s just I wouldn’t have seen enough of him to recognise him. But again, the joke? Anyone?
I see burning landscape, with lots of smoke. But that can’t be it, or Larisa would like the picture. Maybe he should add flames and such…
Larisa’s statement logic makes me love her more. She sees him as an artist for what CAN do, instead of what he DOES do. Housepets has an art page up as well. Art talk is so deep at times. Has Ivan been seen before? Seems nice.
above comment, no this is ivan first appearance if my memory serves me right.
I think larisa hates it cause it has colorz!!

Why Ivan paints such depressing stuff?
Uhm, the first thing that jumped into my head was that it is because he is a russian. 😛
ivan larissa relative?
@ kroiden:
And Russians paint reality…
Its not ugly, depressing maybe but definetly not ugly
Ivan looks like he needs a lot more coffee. Hmm, I guess he’s the mellow one in counterpoint to Larissa’s mom. Kids that call their parents by name weird me out but I guess it’s just a “thing” for some people. When I first read this strip I figured he was an older art student at school before I remembered he was her dad, he looks a bit young.
@ Tfeth282:
It only becomes an art when it is done with finesse, subtlety, and use in the proper place or, all of the above.
;;grins;; Everyone’s a critic and the picture isn’t even done yet
Some people said he looks like he could use some sleep, but my first thought was that he seemed to be ill, or weak. Maybe Larissa inherited her multiple health issues from him? That could also partly explain his painting such depressing landscapes (I believe that´s a city in ruins)
A compliment. Larisa-style.
The brown object at the bottom right of Ivan’s painting looks either like a gallows or a guillotine.
Ah, Larisa. Always blunt and to the point. And sometimes, it isn’t pretty.
Start of a mini story arc, I’m sure.
Oh atrists they can bo so ran… Wait WHAT? COLORS!!! HOW didn’ I notice that the first time? O_0″
For the ones who like to know Art was invented in the XVIII century. Two Books “The invention of Art” and “Art enemy of the people” document that Art as a concept in the modern world started in XVIII almost at the same time that the term Sine Noviliaris.
Art is diferent from literature, painting, sculture, music, etc.
In reinassence every piece of literature and painting was art, The only discussion was if a text was literature, and what was a painting, etc.
You couldnt say “Oh this painting is art!!” cause It would be redundant. Before that Art was identify as something mistic, mithic and religious.
Art has NOTHING in Itself that make it valuable. You like It? good for you. You dont? pity.
But if you let the snobism apart everyone is capable of admiring good music, painting, literature, etc. if they have an open mind and a sense of personal taste.
It makes you own your destiny
@ Gerardo Tejada:
I think I have to disagree art has been with us since our very beginnings (ref: cave paintings, bone carvings, stone figures etc…) some had religious value and some was purely decorative and while they may not have used a particular word the intent was clear. Look at the Art of ancient civilizations. Many of the great Artists were supported by “patrons” who saw value in what they did enough so they were free to be creative. If that wasn’t Art for Art’s sake I don’t know what is. Art survives it’s creator in how it changes rules or minds. Art can not be classified, quantified or defined. Art has no definite beginning or end.
completely unrelated to the comic i know, but is ur picture a dog wearing Ace’s hat or Ace as a dog?

Adorable raccoon and ferret, stop me if you’ve seen this…
@ IndigoRei:
he is mentioned in cast under suporting charaters
Nice. But I miss Woo.
Oh snap! 😀
She says he’s a fantastic artist but calls his pictures butt-ugly?
Seems legit.
Not enough artists paint that way. It is nicer. And fie on anyone who calls it “depressing”.
As an artist, I actually understand this. It is completely and entirely possible to see the work of someone and know that they are more talented than the artwork may imply. Many artists that have incredible talent choose to spend their time doing things that do not tax their skills. Others do fairly mundane average-day artistic activities with more advanced artistic techniques, but an average artistic piece with advanced techniques is still average, when said advanced techniques show the capacity for being extraordinary.
