Our reader Paul informed me that Butterfly climbed 213 metres up the Toronto condo tower to train her stamina.
- Richard: This was the worst week at work since that pack of coyotes ravaged the server room.
- Richard: A three year old toddler couldn’t have been more obnoxious than this woman.
- Richard: And worst of all, her code is 57% faster than mine.
- Melody: I love this song.
- Richard: So why, in God’s name, did I invite her to dinner?

your evil subconcious wants to let her upst woo
Re: Butterfly. The link doesn’t seem to be working, however a search on Google says the racoon climbed to the top of a 700 foot (213 Meter) crane in downtown Toronto, had a dump and climbed down again

Link to CBC article isn’t working for me. If anyone else is having the same problem:

Dialog for tomorrow’s comic starts with:
Sandra: “°Dad? There’s a strange woman in the shower. I gotta get dressed for school.”
@ Paeris Kiran:
“The coyotes thin the RAID arrays, removing the slowest and weakest disks to keep the average seek speed high.”
(hope someone gets the reference)
Well… this was effin obvious… but I never would have guessed that it would happen this fast.
“Sandra, meet your new b***h node of a mother.”
Totally saw this coming.
@ Eternis and @ Bobbert:
Yup! Richard, her code is over 100% faster than yours! Gettin’ owned in your head while gettin’ owned in your head! Though I still say the readable wins over the fast!
I wonder how much the density of math and programming strips correlates with the density of nitpicking in the comments. It has that magic pull that makes you join the arguing!
It would be cool if woo was found out, i think it would be a cool story ark.
This seems like a bad idea. He is responsible for hiring her, so if he starts dating her, her qualifications for the job will come under question.
This scenario has been played out over and over.
The simple truth is that resentment begets infatuation, which can feel like love.
If this relationship leads to marriage, I give them a year before divorce, maybe two, unless their eyes open and they overcome their resentment genuinely during that time.
(I had typed “sexuality” before changing to “infatuation”. While also true, I figured I didn’t have to be that harsh.)
My god, bad steering wheel handling! He has his arms crossed! What if another car were to hit him from the front right (the diredtion ne’s NOT looking at) at speed? He’d have broken arms!
Looks like Sandra’s getting a mommy!
Why do people think Richard has any interest in Melody? She has been nothing but condescending toward him. Her BOSS. Why doesn’t he just fire her and make sure she can never get work ever again? Once someone insults you, they lose any “cuteness” they might have once had.
Is Richard really Melody’s boss? He is a boss, but he’s not the highest boss in his work place and melody is the department head of the graphics programming department. It’s likely that none of them works under the other.
Anyway, I wonder where this is going. I do not find them developing a stable relationship plausible, at least not with what I know now.
@ Eternis:
Oh thank goodness. If this comic’s audience had got to 66 comments without someone pointing out that (100-57)/100 != 100/(100+57) I’d have been worried.

Because he’s taking her to dinner.
It’s called “Slap-Slap-Kiss”, Richard. Get used to it.
I knew this was where this was going. Of course, if he doesn’t want to get rid of her, he could arrange for Woo and Lily to “interrupt” the meal again. ;3

Rather, if he WANTS to get rid of her. xD
Just felt like nitpicking, if his code is 57% slower than hers (mentioned in previous comic), then that means her code is 133% faster than his. Kind of like how “99% less germs” means almost no germs left but “99% more germs” would be twice as much as before.

I’m about >< far from trying to jump into the web comic and beat the ever loving &)(* out of that

Only 57%?
I once changed 12 lines of code in a 2000 Line program that changed the run time from 20 Minutes to 20 Seconds.
There are some Amazing “Aw @#$%@#$s” out there in the code base if you knw what to look for.
I actually Learned what to look for from a co-Worker who “Fixed” a program that was taking One Hour to run and ended up with a 10 Second Execution time with exactly the same (Accurate) results. The Calculation involved was regarded as so “Complex” that no one had ever questioned just Why it was running so long before. But, Users were Complaining, so she was told to find some way to shave a few minutes off the run time. She found a “Way”.
Because when your workmate is fucking with the code-base and being the largest bitch in the software engineering field, there’s no better time to started a forced relationship!
WAIT ONE SECOND
In the last comic she said HER code was 57% FASTER
NOW this says HIS code is 57% SLOWER
Those are not interchangeable!
I think he has a crush on her.
Aw, my plot twist was that Richard dates the mediator.
Very well. I’d buy the bobblehead.
But didn’t Richard complain about security flaws in Melody’s code?
Oh crap, “a flaw in Melody’s code” sounded like innuendo.
Nerdy innuendo.
Oh god my pants…
Uhm, any reason besides it being a mistake that your link to the Toronto tower raccoon news article goes through gmx?
Don’t support the United Internet gmbh even more! :/
All I want to know, is this in response to all of us shipping these two, or where we all just right
Well, I see three possible answers:
1: She’s playing you like a harp. Or a video game. Or something.
2: “Sandra, I’m about to because an alcoholic. Before I open this bottle of Russian Standard I stole from HR, I thought you should meet the reason why.”
3: “Hey, Woo, I need your friends to “take care of” someone for me. This is what she looks like.”
HEYO! Did someone call for FedEx? ‘Cuz I see quite a bit of shipping going on…
You’re taking her out to dinner because she’s decided that you are just what she wants, like most about-to-be-married men.
i ship them

Samuel Clemens “HE chases HER until SHE catches HIM”
doesn’t exactly match the overt scene, but think about it.
@ Bobbert:
This is because in the last she was saying his coding is slower than hers. In this one he is admitting her coding is faster than his.
what song is it?
Yep. Future wife…. 🙂
@ Clepta Personatus:
its just you
Sandra’s new mommy?????
Somebody else reads XKCD and had he same thought I did!
@ Rex Vivat:
Richard doesn’t know of Woo’s sapience, Hurocrat.
@ Epic_Wink:
If he hits something with his arms crossed on the wheel, his airbag is going to double-backfist him with his own fists.
@ Johners12345:
Yeah, we get that. We can spot the difference between the two words.
The point is that “57% faster” is not the inverse of “57% slower”
“57% slower” implies a 57% longer run-time, journey-time or whatever.
For example, program A runs in 100 seconds and program B runs in 157 seconds. That’s program B being 57% slower than program A.
(157-100)/100 = 0.57
Another example: car F is going at 100 km/h. Car G is going at 43 km/h. That’s car G beind 57% slower than car F.
(100-43)/100 = 0.57
Program A isn’t 57% faster than program B, and car F isn’t 57% faster than car G.
The run-time of prgram B is 57% OF PROGRAM A’S RUN-TIME longer.
Car G’s speed is 57% OF CAR F’S SPEED lower.
If you reverse the “slower” to “faster” you have to swap the denominator in the fraction, too.
(157-100)/157 = 0.36305732484 (11dp)
(100-43)/43 = 1.32558139535 (11dp)
Program A’s run-time is 36.3% (3sf) OF PROGRAM B’s RUN-TIME shorter.
Car F’s speed is 132% (3sf) OF CAR G’s SPEED higher.
Program A is 36.3% faster than program B. Car F is going 132% faster than car G.
If his code was 57% slower than hers and hers is now 57% faster than his, either hers has slowed down or his has sped up.

Actually, if you look closely at the panels, the Second panle is the only one where his arms Cross.
He’s Turning the Corner in that panel which is difficult to do without having your arms cross unless you drive with only One Hand.
The other 3 panels clearly show his arms in perfectly good 10 o’clock, 2 o’clock positions.
