- Larisa: That game you’re playing looks weird.
- Cloud: It’s a visual novel.
- Larisa: A visual novel, hmm? So it’s one of those Japanese games where you try to take panty shots of schoolgirls?
- Cloud: Of course not!
- Cloud: It’s an interactive story about time travel!
- Larisa: Lame.

Not just any Time Travel, THE Time;Travel visual novel…

I’ll also post an interesting news post in a week or so. Stay tuned!
Well she really seems to be fine without succubus training…
@ r4m0n:
We have a new story arc about time travel? Sandra and Woo and Mac the Dinosaur?
Too obvious!
I like a good visual Novil.
Gotta love Steins;Gate
That reminds me, I need to play Steins:Gate 0. I really loved the first game. I wonder how Cloud gets those games working on his tablet? I know I can’t seem to get them to work without some technical glitches.

The Dr. Pepper, Global Intelligence Beverage, is a nice touch.

Not only intelligent people drink Dr Pepper, but all intelligent people drink Dr Pepper.
Sooo… Larisa would enjoy Yandere Simulator?
@ Sally:
Probably not after they made it so much harder to dispose of bodies in the incinerator.
Sally wrote:
I don’t think Larisa would enjoy the really evil stuff in it.
Would those two be mutually exclusive in Japan? Not so sure.
This comic could be less wordy if Larisa just said “Gal Gun” and Cloud just said “literally any Kemco game for mobile” although now that I think about it those are more like JRPG’s OH WELL JOKES
There’s stuff there for Larisa too, there is that one fight scene toward the end.
Maybe it’s Time Tenshi?

I don’t know… Dr Pepper is my favorite drink… But a few friends of my who are in the same intelligent profession as I am actually don’t like it…
@ Lolikiano:
End of 0, I mean. More recent so kind of what my mind snapped to.

her response would be “Feh, amateurs.”

This is the 11 year old that sent a photo of her naughty bits to everyone ON THE PLANET. She really *didn’t* need much training.
@ All-Purpose Guru:
Not the whole planet, just North America, and also unintentionally. But yeah, she still probably doesn’t really need training.
Oh, so he’s playing Angels With Scaly Wings? Not a bad choice!
So was this strip. Sorry, just don’t get it.
I had to look it up; never heard of the game/series/movie before either, Mortar.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steins;Gate </possible spoilers warning>
@ TvTropesgotmehooked: As somebody whose username is a Daru made product… I’m offended you had to look up the most amazingly warped time travel series of VNs I’ve come across. And by “amazingly warped” I mean time warped in an amazing fashion. And also mildly disturbing, but…
@ Kindren:
The original S;G works fine on android and iOS, just no english on Android.
@ Novil:
The IBM OVAs had the Dr. Pepper logo changed to “Global Intelligence Beverage” instead of “Dr. Pepper”
“It’s me. Yes, the Organization is on the move again. I can see their agents looking through the screen at me. No, no. We need to move quickly, that Raccoon looks like it will tell them about our plan any moment now.”
I’m pretty intelligent and I can’t stand Dr. Pepper and never could. But then, I don’t much like any soft drink. Coffee or beer, take your pick.
I’m wondering if cloud is playing “life is strange”
A messed up visual novel by square Enix
Seriously awesome but also depressing lol
@ Commentary Ver.2.72:
Tv Tropes is such a big place, and I’m ashamed that I linked to an inferior website. Corrected link here: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/VisualNovel/SteinsGate 😀
Maybe I should try some Dr. Pepper…
I would’ve added the spoiler warning tag, but I can’t remember much of what happens/happened/will not happen…
Confusing ball of timey-wimey.
Kindren wrote:
Isn’t that obvious? He asked Yuna to threaten the tablet into submission.
Is it ‘Life Is Strange’? I’ve just started that. It’s a lot of fun so far. Good concept.
Everyone remembers Steins;Gate, but no one I hear talking about it seems to know that it’s actually a sequel to a pretty crappy game, Chaos;Head.
Eh, Robotics;Note was my favorite.
This is the first time I’ve heard the term ‘visual novel’. I didn’t find the Wikipedia entry to be much help. Based on Larisa’s comment, can I assume it’s yet another aspect of Japanese culture this Boomer hasn’t been exposed to? Do the phrases ‘visual novel’ and ‘visual novel game’ refer to different things, or are they interchangeable? Would someone suggest a better reference or a link to some examples (hopefully free)?
Thanks.
Unpopular opinion of the day: For me visual novels are even more boring than point-and-click games…
Sure it’s not “Time Tenshi” ?:P
Let me guess… the same I’ve been hooked on the last days: 80 Days?
@ Novil:
Huh. I was going to assume it was the Zero Escape series.
Novil wrote:
I do not drink Dr. Pepper, I must not be as smart as I think I am.
@ Kindren:
It’s in the Play Store, but is only in Japanese. You can find a translated version online, but knowing Cloud, he’s probably playing the Japanese version.

I am a Hacker. I drink the One True Caffeine Source, Mt.Dew. Accept no substitutes! (Except Jolt, if you can still find it.)

@ Charlie Spencer:
First off, “visual novel game” is correct, but redundant and unused. The term “visual novel” already conveys the information that it’s a game– but them being games is a controversial point due to low player interactivity; see below.
Visual novels are games, which, while they existed before, were only popularized by the Japanese culture export to the West. The game is focused on the story, with (typically) little to no gameplay. The player plays a single character.
The screen displays some background, characters and text (narration or dialogue). You click to advance, and once in a while you select a choice. There is music too.
As a medium, I’d say they resemble webcomics and gamebooks.
Typical, but not in any way ubiquitous, are anime style graphics and plots which are all about romancing a character of your choice, though IMO these usualy mark the worse VNs (short for visual novel).
I recommend:
Moonlight walks – genre mystery/romance, free, short
Narcissus – genre psychological drama???, free, without player choices – such VNs are called “kinetic”.
I wish Sandra had heard that whole conversation cuz that could have been funny
