Meet Larisa Korolev, daughter of a Russian artist and Sandra’s best friend besides Cloud. If you are familiar with roleplaying game systems, you can think of her as a good example of the chaotic neutral alignment.
If you aren’t living in Europe, you probably have to read the short abstract of the Wikipedia article about Russia-Ukraine gas disputes to get the joke.
- Larisa: Argh! I’m telling you, that arrogant bitch Zoey has it in for me!
- Sandra: I guess you’ll just have to put up with it, Larisa. Some people are just jerks.
- Larisa: No, enough is enough! This calls for revenge! Russian style!
- Zoey’s father: Boy, it’s getting colder and colder in here…!

Ooook…I saw the devil…& she scares me…a lot
excellent! I like her way of thinking
Cold is a revenge best dished out Russian-style?
Now THAT’S a face that gets RESULTS 😀
Just as good she didn´t single out Zoey´s home for a rocket test, eh? 😉
You were right: this comic is PG-rated, what with the use of “bitch.”
I hadn’t heard about this RL conflict. For a moment, I wondered if she was going to bring forth a variant of Russian roulette. Can you do that with paintball?
And now there’s a “Find your Russian beauty” ad at the right. Heh.
Woa, and here I thought the comic was G.
Of course, living in America where it was news for a while that an elderly man froze to death in Michigan because he couldn’t pay his gas bills, this takes on an entirely new dimension of creepy.
Even paintball at pointblank would kill someone, so I wouldn’t suggest Russian roulette. However, I think messing with Russians is still a dumb idea. They’re related to Vikings!
Yikes.. this comic just got not fun anymore…
this is going in my favorits. and go Larisa get that zoey chick!
Tom Austin, paintballs retain absolutely no capacity to kill anyone, no matter what the range.
People frequently get shot from inches away in competition, usually it is associated with a move known as a bunkering maneuver where a player would run up to the opponents cover, shoot them, and then use that cover for his/herself.
With proper use of safety equipment (goggles) paintball is one of the most injury free sports out there. Things like sprained ankles are the only major things that can happen on a usual basis.
The only serious injuries related to the sport have been from faulty airtanks that were overpressurized, and those are few and isolated.
That being said, Russian Roulet in paintball is impossible do to the loading system.
I think she may have a thing for engineering in her future!
And here I thought she was waging a Cold War! Because… she made it… cold….
… it was funnier in my head.
hehehe…. i didn’t get that immediately, but nice use of current events 😉
and the art is as good as ever – though i can’t help thinking some of the smaller faces could benefit from extra resolution somehow
hmm…looks like a cold war to me. 🙂
“boy” ….?
What does “her” dad know what we don’t? 😀 😀 😀
(sorry, not sure what happened there, i think it’s some leftover spark from being a reformed former reader of venus envy and the like!)
….also, from deep in the memory banks, VE’s lead character’s femme pseudonym was Zoë … hmm! Though s/he was a redhead and somewhat older.
(heh heh heh)
“Boy” as in “oh, boy” or “oh man”. Probably best defined as a general usage expletive when minors are present. Thus, you don’t have to be talking to a boy to use it.
By the way, that drawing of “evil Larisa” is great! No wonder you posted it a week in advance
Russian style revenge…. ROFL! brilliant….=D
Doesn’t seem much like Chaotic Neutral to me. Then again, I’ve only ever met one person that plays CN right. Everyone else just plays Neutral Evil and calls it Chaotic Neutral.
Nice visual on the second panel!
Maybe – maybe – you shouldn’t be using as many contemporary jokes in it. They’re not bad at all, but the further from the events, the more explaining it takes. And I mean not only distance, but also time. Two years later, this might not be “getable” anymore.
But I like this comics so far. Even though I know almost nothing about the other comics (except for Calvin & Hobbes) and video games referenced.
This is epic.
You know, I didn’t even suspect this was a contemporary event joke (not living in Europe), I figured it was more a thing about Russia’s cold winters (and, you know, how that defeats every army that’s ever invaded them.)
I think it’s even funnier looking at it that way, too.
Aw, geez. A chaotic neutral?!
There are too many of us!
best part, is that I got the joke right away
Heh, even without the reference to the gas conflict, removing the heat is plenty Russian as it is 😛
cold war pun? or just russian climate pun? its still funny 🙂
On one hand, this girl is my kinda chick!
but on the other, i am a bit disturbed at the fact that i saw an ad for russian mail-order brides underneath.
Shooting yourself with anything at pointblank range…. paintballs, bbs, Jujubes… Is pretty dumb and potentially fatal..
..well maybe not the jujubes… unless its being shout out of a black powder weapon… or something with a lot of compressed airpower…
I digress.
Also, kudos on the Viking/Russian reference. Being an American, there is a terrible derth of people living in this country that understand that the founding of the Russian empire was a direct result of wandering vikings. Of course, people in America are often ignorent of anything that isn’t shown on reality TV…. *sigh*
Lol This reminded me of Heavy from TF2
If she did that to me, she would have done a favour for me 😀
<— likes cold
I apologize if I’m nitpicking but it’s supposed to be KorolevA since she’s female, most Russian last names decline, especially those ending by a soft consonant.
Source: I’m Russian. 😉
Great comic by the way, enjoying it so far. Just felt like I should point out that little mistake.
I thought you used those symbol things like public printed comics instead of actual swear words…
The girl with dark hair looks like Trixie Tang
@ The Other One:
I agree. I don’t see Larisa as a Chaotic Neutral. I mean she does love chaos. But for her to be a Chaotic Neutral, she’d have to lack both a strong desire to help people and to harm people. They tend to leave others alone and Larisa seems pretty vengeful.
@ Nayro:
They’re living in the USA though, it’s probably just a lot simpler to go along with their adopted country’s family name system to avoid confusing people and legal slip-ups, for the sake of one letter. So the daughter takes the father’s surname, unmodified. At least, unless she gets married…
I stand by my 3-years-former statement that it’s Zoey we should be looking at in terms of gender issues :p
Larisa knows General Winter always wins. =P
@ reynard61:
That’s an interesting way of putting things 🙂
Korolev? Can I expect Blake & Mortimer to walk onto the set soon? 😉
A cold war?
@ Chochi:
Cho…I couldn’t help but notice your, delightful stretch-of-reality and so wonderfully shaded color, avatar. That said…I DEMAND to please have its source. Is it custom or slightly-famous-official anime?
Pardon this poor joke:
In ‘Soviet’ Russia…cold bites you!
Wow, I read the author’s comment and was like, “This comic is 2deep4me… I’m going to enjoy this.”
Yet another deserving soul learns that it is never wise to cross a Russian. Nice!
Petty revenge vas inwented in Russia.
Yeesh, Makes me glad she chose fire over the cold..
Nice choice of name 😀
Zoey and her father look very 1960’s-American-Cartoon-ish. I’m sure I’m not the first to notice?
@ John Willow:
who looks like Winnie Cooper.
