great success!
I thought about doing the same thing the first time I was severed sushi. The only thing that stopes me was I was in Japan fro the first time and was not sure how it would go over.
Although technically, sushi doesn’t have to have raw fish. Egg sushi (which is a sort of omlettey thing on top of the rice) is really quite nice. And cucumber is another common filling.
You have me playing final fantasy 7 again 😛
Great comic 😀
If I had a buncha extra munnies I’d donate some 😛
Larissa always find a way to involve fire, even when eating dinner 😀
salmon sushi is smoked or cooked the raw stuff is full of parasytes
unagi and anago are cooked in a lovely sauce. sashimi, not sushi is always raw
you pick it up with your hands
I don’t think a lighter’s gonna cut it. If I were her, I’d go to the kitchen, fire up the burner (if that’s the right word for the ring of fire on a stove) and fry that thing! I mean, cook it until it’s edible.
Great scene! Fortunately I’ve read enough and seen enough not to embarrass myself in foreign countries, especially in Japan.
@ cacomistle:
Clearly you’ve never had quality salmon sushi.
In other news: Epic win, Larissa!
I want to try sushi, haven’t really had any, but I think it’ll be great. Still, I wonder how many people would do this if given the chance. This is one time I’ve seen Larisa’s pyro tendencies be useful .
Nice to see that Ye Thuza has a sense of humor about the situation.
BTW: Sushi isn’t about the fish. It means “vinegar rice”. (or so the Sushi-ka at Trader Joe’s told me…)
I think Ye Thuza might be jealous she didn’t think of it first.
Sushi (that I’ve had) depends a lot on the fish used and the quality of the preparation. Not to mention sauces and garnishes (like sliced ginger). Mom here though has a good sense of humor in dealing with Sandra’s faux pax.. I love the way you have Sandra ‘stab’ the food with the chopstick. Good visual point showing how she really is not familiar with the food or customs right from panel 2. Chopsticks can be fun. Once I learned how, I tried using them on almost everything. I’ve eaten ice cream with chopsticks. Then the novelty wore off. Hey, I was maybe twelve at the time.
Accuracies of fish edible-ness aside, Ye Thuza and Larisa’s faces in the last panel are absolutely adorable/awesome.
Larisa’s face in panels two and three are priceless. XD
Sushi is seasoned rice with something on it or in it.
Trust me, my mom’s full japanese.
😀 love this comic!
This makes me obscenely happy. It reminds me of myself, though I’m not bullish on butane…
“If white wine goes well with fish, do white grapes go well with sushi?”
I was more entertained by how Larisa impaled the sushi on a chopstick instead of using the chopsticks properly. She’s a problem solver!
I’d do the same thing Larisa did, assuming I knew the person who prepared the food would not get upset.
I’m the pickiest eater of anyone I know.
My girlfriend has actually done this 😀
she wanted to try sushi, so she ordered it…and then decided raw fish was not for her. took it home and tossed it in a frying pan :p i laughed my ass off
But Larisa! You’re cooking the best part!
that’s probably what i would do with sushi, too!
FIRE!
FIRE!
FIRE RULES!
IT RULES!
HEH HEH. HMMM.
I love Ye Thuza’s reaction.
i wouls laugh hard of it…
but i’ve seen something similar done for real XD
While I like this, the dialogue in the second panel doesn’t look quite right. Shouldn’t she be saying “this salmon still looks quite…raw”?
Burn, baby, burn! Sushi inferno!
L.K. at clouds house…
My, that was cute.
This goes oddly well with today’s Little Tales (http://www.little-tales.com/index.php?Strip=391).
@ Baughbe:
That’s Larissa not Sandra, dear.
@ Sara:
Well, I was never good with names. In fact absolutely horrible. I mess up names of people I’ve known for years. Dyslexia is a cruel mistress. And spell check rocks.
It’s only one type of sushi, known as ‘sashimi’, that has raw fish/seafood. Other types have smoked fish, cooked prawns, vegetables, egg, etc. Even then, raw fish is perfectly edible as long as it has been stored and prepared properly (though freshwater fish isn’t often used as it is likely to contain parasites), and it actually tastes good, though cooked fish has more flavour IMO ^_^
Still a funny comic either way 🙂
I had salmon sushi once, but it made me gag. I’m with Larisa all the way on this one.
“My thinks I’m white trash because I use too much ketchup…on my sushi.” – Jim Gaffigan
Great comic!
So i am still interested in Larisa’s multitude of ailments. Is she heading for her doc’s office any time soon or do we still have many years to come of her pyro antics? I like her the most cuz i myself like to set random thngs on fire too. Nothing illeagal mind you but I do feel naked without my lighter in my pocket.
Mmm, I love sushi!
Did you know sushi was originally a finger food? I read in a book it was made for the same purpose that sandwiches were made (So people can easily hold them and gamle at the same time).
Mmmm sushi! I love sushi! Of all kinds. Ok, maybe not with eel. Sadly that stuff tastes like greasy diesel to me. My favourite is crab and avocado. I’ve made sushi a few times now and it has come out pretty tasty… even if it did look like a green sweat sock stuffed with lumpy potatoes. Some day I’d love to visit Japan and learn how to propely make sushi! 🙂
I’ve been able to use chopsticks since we were taught way back in grade 1 (I’ve been out of school for about 20 years now). My grade 1 teacher wanted to introduce us little sponges to various cultures in the world. Every 2 weeks was a new theme. But the best part of all the stuff (at least to me) was the different foods. She’d even brought in real sushi for our Japanese culture weeks… surprisingly everyone actually ate it! Not a single kid refused 🙂 I apparently don’t hold chopsticks correctly though, so I just tell people I eat with an accent LOL! I figure if my two sticks can pick the food up without difficulty, and I can get the food to my mouth without any of it dropping, then I’m using them right LOL! I’ve since taught my own children how to use them and they adore Japanese (and other Asian type) foods too.
Wow, if you look closely you will even notice that the Rice is Upwards meaning that the salmon is at the bottom like it should be if its stabbed from above, heck attention to detail to the full…
Also, I know that Thuza has Asian Ancestry, but if I remember right it ain’t Japanese. Then again you don’t need to be Japanese to enjoy eating or making Sushi/Sashimi…
Okay let me ask, why is Larisa eating at Cloud’s place and why isn’t Sandra there? :O
Then let me say I just love her face in panel 3, so typical for ppl who just learned about sushi, but at least she’s “smart” enough to fix the problem. XD
BTW May I say stuff like “Is there goin to be somethin special for the 200th strip next time? :D”. If I can’t then I won’ ask it. (Me be smart.) X)
@ Nanoth:Yeah had the same thought, but ended up with, even I’d love to try sushi once so I’d bet Ye Thuza even makes her own sushi. Japanese food is just as global now as hamburgers. 🙂
I’m no expert, but wouldn’t cooking like that give the fish the flavor of butane?
Sashimi is awesome! I’d eat raw beef as long as the quality is high (might as well ear rubber otherwise).
I’ve also read about horse sashimi, but that doesn’t sound as appetizing.
@ Kyla:
Yes, and “raw sliced flesh, especially fish” is sashimi.
@ Baughbe:
Hardest thing to eat with chopsticks that I’ve found is Jello. It you put any pressure to it at all, the sticks slice through it, if you try not to use and pressure its slides right out. You can attempt to balace it if the jello is cubed, but even that doesn’t work very well.
@ Jambalaya:
I would think so. And somehow I don’t think that the lighter would be able to cook it through either. It would more likely just singe the outside.
@ Krynne:
Aw, that’s a shame… Unagi is my personal favorite! But to each his own, of course!
—
In regards to the strip itself, I know it’s been said, but I have to say it too… Sushi just means “vinegared rice”, and it may or may not contain raw fish, depending on the recipe. lol A lot of people hear me mention I like sushi, and their faces automatically contort into a look of disgust followed by, “You eat RAW fish?” Well, yeah, but sushi doesn’t have to be raw fish o.o
Then again, I do live in a rural farming community in Southeastern Kansas…not exactly the most…culturally rich place you could be.
What can I say, I like Ungai as well but on the flip side I have no love for most mollusks or especially not oysters. I don’t see the charm in shucking one live, swallowing it whole and slurping down its circulatory fluid..
Fortunately Toronto and its surrounding towns and cities is a bit more cosmopolitan than a lot of places in the US mid-west. My neighborhood has a preponderance of Dosa Huts and Samosa places and the like but all I have to do is travel 20 minutes and there are more east and southeast Asian restaurants than you could shake a bundle of chopsticks at.
I like how Cloud’s mom thought it was funny. 🙂 Btw I love sushi! So yummy!
Great, now I want sushi, and that’s gonna last like 3 weeks until I finnally can eat some, like always *cries*
Loved this strip, though *sniff*
Raw fish and rice being sushi is actually a huge misconception by most of the masses who are not familiar with the term, when it is generally actually nothing more then rice wrapped in seaweed.
Kids this days…
This strip gets a surprising number of comments.
Of course I knew that “sushi” in the narrower sense of the meaning of the word only stands for the rice. However, it is commonly understood to also stand for the dish including raw fish, especially in colloquial speech.
