Well called, all.
Snarky Comment: “You were attacked by the 2008 Disney animated film Bolt? NOOO!”
Sincere Comment: I know Woo’s the one who got injured, buy poor Lily! She’s having one roller coaster of a night.
Wow. Sandra’s outstretched hand is SO eloquent (and it worked, what’s more).
Go, Sandra! Go, Lily! and yay for Woo! This is one of the most effective strips in this whole (excellent and effective!) series. THANK YOU!
OH, Thank you God!
… And thank you See-o-ahtlah-ma-kas-kay (cioatlamacasque)!
What! I didn’t do anything.
This comic is really amazing. It can generate so much depth and heart-warming sequences by being genuine and sincere. You can really see the care and affection that the authors are putting in. I love it. I’ve been following it for more than 2 years by now: my moment of expressing my thoughts just had to come 🙂
@ Bolt:
Of course you did….
now two girls are gonna turn into best friends…..well…looks like it’s going to happen…
Putting aside your personal issues to be there for someone you care about…
Congratulations, Lily. You’ve taken a step to becoming a better person.
Lily’s expression to Sandra’s offer is what makes this strip for me.
I can’t get this fast enough though! How will Lily handle being so near to humans.
And it is like Woo had some kind of premonition that something bad was going to happen…
(And there’s the possibility that Lily is pregnant).
Er…so…can Lily talk too? To humans, that is? Could other animals too, if they wanted to…?
Whatever the case, it’s great to see Lily being willing to trust Sandra at least enough to accompany her to help with Woo…:)
*quitely fangirls*
Excellent way to do this: Love knows no boundaries!
One does not simply fang irk quietly!
Yeah! Go Lily! Humans aren’t all bad after all! 😀
Next up: Sandra’s dad’s reaction to yet another raccoon to deal with
I’ve never seen more fear in someones eyes until I saw the fear in Lily’s eyes.
Chill girl, shes not gonna hurt you! 🙂
@ ekimmak:
I think you mean better animal. XD
Is it just me, or does the part with Sandra’s outstretched hand look very similar to the part of the FMA opening? 😛
@ ZAD-Man:
No she can’t. Woo can talk to people due to his “vocal apparatus” on his collar. He talks about it in this strip: http://www.sandraandwoo.com/2008/11/17/negotiating-methods/
The next day:
Sandra: “Well, it seems like everything end well. Woo injury wasn’t severe. Lily able to trust human now. Woo is recovering quickly right now and we have a pair of Raccoons living in our house. What could possible go wro-”
*Open door to Woo’s recovery room”
In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight
In the jungle, the silent jungle the lion sleeps tonight
Ahimo-weh ahimo-weh ahimo-weh ahimo-we-
*Close door*
Sandra: “Welp, time for some eye bleach.”
@ Bizkit:
I’m pretty sure what Woo means by “vocal apparatus” is vocal cords.he doesn’t have a translating gadget on his collar.
From the online version of Merriam-Webster:
1. b : a group of anatomical or cytological parts functioning together
So, Woo’s vocal apparatus is his vocal chords, larynx, and all related organs.
@ Bizkit:
He means his vocal chords, not his collar. He is adopting a pose in that frame, not pointing to his collar. He’s also showing off his vocabulary by saying “apparatus”.
He doesn’t even WEAR a collar half the time, including in this comic, in which he’s shown talking to Sandra. So it’s definitely an innate part of him somehow.
I really hope this winds up with an arc where lily moves in with them, or something…that would be an interesting development
First comment I leave here since…ever.
But I got to say… this strip was just perfect.
Beautiful and touching.
Such a wonderful job conveying the kindness and love in Sandra’s eyes and the fear in Lily’s. I love the gestures, and finally the trust. With luck this will lead to a new beginning for them.
Let’s see what happens next.
Perfect example of sequential art storytelling that bottom row.
Lily looking afraid.
Picture of Sandra offering her a hand.
Zoom in on Woo’s unconcious form.
And without a single word written, we all know EXACTLY what went through Lily’s mind in those few seconds.
All I can say is, it is very cool that Lily dared to take Sandra’s hand–a HUGE step for her….
And that Sandra, in love for a fellow-being, freely invited and encouraged Lily to come…..

Oh my God, how did I not realize that See-o-ahtlah-ma-kas-kay was cioatlamacasque?!?
Suddenly, I have a theory;
What if Sandra is cioatlamacasque? After all, they not only spoke to the spirits of the dead, but also the spirits of the earth and the animals. Perhaps no animal had tried to speak to her and she never tried to speak to any animals until she met Woo. This would mean that she could always actually talk to any animal (but she’s never bothered trying because she didn’t know she could), and that Woo is just a normal racoon, but thinks he’s special because Sandra could understand him.
So are we finally gonna learn how Woo is able to talk to Sandra?
@ ZAD-Man: She can’t, but it seems she can understand them
Bizkit wrote:
well, that’s not quite how I read that.
I’m attached to my vocal apparatus too – the larynx and vocal chords that have been in my throat for sixty odd (some of them VERY odd) years. I don’t see this as being an explanation of his peculiar ability, just a desire to keep it intact without busybodies investigating it!
@ Extraintelligence:
That’s an awesome theory…but then how did Woo talk to that random hunter in the woods when he got taken by the eagle? I quote: “Look, a talking raccoon!” *sprints away*
Very nice final panels and a good webcomic overall.
My guess is that Lily will only be staying a day or so, just until she’s sure that Woo is going to be fine, then Lily will be off back into the woods.
After all, Lily is a *wild* raccoon and needs her freedom.
Anyone betting she runs in when the door’s open?
OH GEEZ IT HAPPENED SOMEHOW I KNEW IT BUT STILL MIND ‘SPLOSION WOOOOOO!! XD

Interesting, so I did some googling and here’s the explanation that came out:
Mexico (used by Aztecs, but probably borrowed from another trib): see-o-ahtlah-ma-kas-kay (cioatlamacasque), she who talks with spirits; ee-yah-mah-tohn, she (little old one) who knows things
Maybe Sandra is the Iamahtohn? or even Larissa? I wonder if there’s hints of supernatural elements that made Woo able to speak human language.

The true art of the sequential art. Isn’t it amazing?

Nah, Lily can’t talk to humans. But I bet she understand them.
So… Did Sandra’s dad hear Woo talking? That would lead to interesting consequences…
Cute. :3
These aren’t tears… really… I’ve got allergies. Yeah, allergies.
I have been waiting for this!
@ Bizkit:
He means his vocal cords, larynx, and other assorted body parts involved in speech. In other words, he’s afraid that scientists will dissect him if they find out he can talk.
well done with this one. very heart warming ^^
@ AckAckAck:
Hmmm. If Larissa was going to be an incognito deitic being, I’d guess Loki – Norse god of fire and mischief. Living as a girl wouldn’t faze him much, especially as he once transformed into a mare in order to lead the builder of Valhalla’s stallion astray, and then ended up bearing the 8-legged foal Sleipnir, which became Odin’s mount. Not to mention that he’s supposed to be tied to a rock underground at the moment, with a serpent dripping caustic venom in his eyes – a situation that would tend to make one rather less picky about alternatives…

Hrm. Interesting, as See-oh-ahtla-ma-kas-kay is associated to some degree (from what I’ve read) with the indigenous North American tribes’ Coyote, who fills in a very similar role to Loki as well as Ananzi. That is to say, they all are aspects of Chaos and Learning in varying ways, and are all Tricksters.
It is very interesting to wonder whether Sandra understood Lily’s choked out “…bolt”. The only thing clearly apparent though is that they both love Woo a great deal, and Lily is willing to put aside her fear of humans because of that love.
Now, explaining this to Richard…
“ANOTHER raccoon?”
“Dad – this is Lily – Woo has been seeing her all summer.”
“I see…wait, how do you know this?”
“He’s brought her to meet me a couple times…”
“…uh…”
@ Kazekage:
Whoops! My bad…it’s Woo who chokes out “…bolt” in the second panel. NOT Lily.
Let’s just hope Richard didn’t hear him.
THE FEELS, THE FEELS ARE TOO MUCH
Good thing all animals comprehend human language.
I love Lily’s reaction when she learns Woo is gonna be OK. She is so relieved.
@ ZAD-Man:
Lolnope.
Sandra secretly has the ability to talk to animals.
Duuuhhh
Not just any animals.
RACOONS.
