- Harriet: Can you help me to–
- Harriet: — Where did you get that painting?
- Landon: Larisa painted it for my birthday. Do you like it?
- Harriet: If I ever see you again with that witch, you’ll be in for a sound beating!
|
Okay, this effing bitch deserves to suffer!
This wasn’t really funny, just sad.
@ Whirlwound:
Yeah, plus it’s kind of misogynistic of her. Calling a woman or a girl a ‘witch’ just because you don’t agree with her lifestyle or beliefs is not a good look.
am i the only one who is just as enraged by the act of destroying the painting itself as by the causes and ramifications of the action? i don’t care who you are, i don’t care about your reasons; never, ever, destroy a piece of art that you did not personally create.
especially one given as a gift to someone else.
yes, the controlling, abusive behavior demonstrated by destroying the painting (and the threat of a beating immediately following) is also terrible. beyond terrible, on so many levels. harriet has proven to not just be bad christian (as so many other people have pointed out), but also a pretty horrible parent. i’m not sure how anyone else in that household has managed to remain so well-balanced. (i’m serious; props to the men in that house for not ending up completely twisted, broken messes under that kind of oppression.)
but as we can see in landon’s face in the last panel, you can’t destroy only the painting. something else is always, always going to be destroyed with it.
in this case, probably something harriet cares about.
@ Sgtflyer:
There are now 1 strong willed woman and 1 extremely strong willed teen. This going to be interesting. I do wish and hope that his dad is NOT the stereotypical nebbish of a man but a strong one, who will not let his wife get away with this.
Harriet may have ‘won’ one now over Larisa. I have a feeling that Harriet will now fear.
@ Egomane:
Its not. The Christian faith is about loving everyone, even those who commit offense against you. If a person uses their faith to put themselves above others, then they are not being true to its teachings. Christians are just forgiven sinners, we still stub our toes with the worst of them.
I hope that Brandon will stand by his girlfriend and that Brandon’s mom will cool her jets….time will tell and I eagerly anticipate the next part.
The hell!
People fear what they do not understand and hate anything different. Larisa falls under both of those.
Wow, a cunt much?! ⊙_☉

Everyone does that. The difference is when you start saying who’s got the correct interpretation: then you have a No True Scotsman fallacy. Or possibly a religious war.
@ Carl W. Roden:
Oh yes, love for all. And slavery, with a side of rape. And of course there’s all the genocide, infanticide, and ever-present warfare. Then there’s the suppression of knowledge, ridiculous rules about things like banning mixed fabrics and crop rotation, and nonsensical murders for things like picking up sticks on sunday. But yes, love. So much love there. Can’t you feel it?
Now Harriet you have committed two or three of the seven deadly sins of Christianity.
First is “wrath” for destroying the painting in anger.
Second is “pride” for thinking you are better than Larisa.
And perhaps the third is “envy”, because such behaviour may be caused by the fact, that Larisa is living an easier life than you.
@ Tau:
You are not alone. Abusive parents destroying the property of there kids to make a point. Been there survived it. Don’t want to go there again.
CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES!!!
Meet Harriet.. she’s destined to be butchered in an ally someday by pissed off homosexual-pro-choice-pro-evolution-racial minorities… and rightfully so, noone will give a crap.
Pardon my language, but that was FUCKING WRONG. The more I see of Harriet, the more I think she’s a terrible person and an even worse influence on Landon than Larisa could possibly be.
Good thing that Landon has a decent father to balance it out.
It’s funny: you’d think parents would remember being horny teenagers who want to do whatever their parents tell them not to.
See Romeo & Juliet.
The most surefire way to ensure teenage pregnancy is to attempt to enforce celibacy. I mean look at it from a purely practical historical statistical standpoint: if enforced celibacy worked the population of Europe and the rest of the world would still be around Dark Ages levels.
As I say to sanctimonious old farts decrying the promiscuity of today’s youth “Our generation did not coin the phrase ‘a roll in the hay’ or ‘out behind the barn’ “.
Wow that’s to much man, that WAY to much, at first I thought she was just a hard to please overbearing mother but she’s actually abusive? Someone needs to put her in check.

This problem is much older 😉
I have also read in a magazine an even older Egypt text with complaints about the youth, which would sound like from today, but did not find it in the internet.
@ Avian Mosquito:
I think you are a hypocrite within your post yo
@ Tau:
“Do what I say or I will hurt you” ya that’s very Christian like threatening your kids like that for really bad reasons I’m shore Jesus would be proud.
I think I can see Landon’s heart break.
Ugh. At first I just kinda hated Harriet. Now I would love it if she burned in a fiery pit. I really, really hate Harriet!
Avian Mosquito wrote:
Define slavery; do you mean ancient Middle East slavery or more modern European slavery?
You don’t think as hard as you believe you do. Nobody can; Assuming the existence of a god all this can make sense, with regard to nitpicking rules. Also, the rule with regard to crops is not anti-rotation. It is to allow the ground to lie fallow for a year after 7 rotations (years).
My parents are farmers. Minus modern fertilizing techniques (Monsanto, Methyl-Bromide fumigation, sulfuric acidification, lots of fun if you don’t care about Organics) allowing the ground to lie fallow is simply wise. Eventually you reach sterility of sorts which decreases quality and yield.
And, I still think your fight is with Judaism. Which I am not equipped to defend since I am less sure than I was anyway. Your ill-backed vitriol just pains me.
@ Alakaslam:
Ill-backed? BULL SHIT. Read your book you ignorant prick.
Now these are out of order. I know them by their words, had to search to get the numbers, so they’re out of order.
Open and blatant endorsement of slavery:
Leveticus 25:44-46 (Oh lovely. Trafficking children. Great moral guidance, god.)
Exodus 21:2-6 (Hey! I’mma keep your family if you don’t work for me! But you’re free to go, sure.)
Exodus 21:20-21 (Oh look. You can murder slaves too if you make it look like an accident.)
Hell, it’s not even an old testament thing:
Esphesians 6:5 (Jesus loves slavery. Yaaaay.)
1 Timothy 6:1-2 (See? Not an isolated incident.)
Luke 12:47-48 (Beating somebody for an accident? This is “moral”?)
What else? Rape? Here, have sone fucking rape.
Deuteronomy 20:10-14 (Hell, this also includes slavery, again.)
Deuteronomy 22:28-28 (Need I say how this is disgusting?)
Numbers 31:7-18 (What, thought I’d stick to Dueteronomy? Numbers has genocide and child rape, I’m not forgetting that.)
2 Samuel 12:11-14 (Rape, followed by MURDERING A CHILD WHO HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. As god FUCKING LOVES TO DO. This is the verse that made my set fire to my bible. I didn’t pick up another for over a year.)
Zechariah 14:1-2 (And god’s even willing to help! Now you can rape and pillage easier!)
As for clothing and crops, which is in one very stupid verse, I was thinking of Leveticus 19:19, but I admit that is Leveticus, the dumbest book in the bible.
Genocide is pretty easy, too. But what really pisses me off is god’s love of slaughtering small children.
Isaiah 14:21
Hosea 9:11-16
1 Samuel 15:2-3
Ezekiel 9:5-7
Isaiah 13:15-18 (Slaughter of children en masse. Your god FUCKING LOVES this.)
Exodus 12:29-30 (This is what made me first question the bible, and prompted me to read it.)
Jeremiah 51:20-26 (Big brave bravado of god. HA! That lasted real fucking long, god got his ass kicked here.)
Leveticus 26:21-22 (Killing children in the same breath as cattle. Like it consisers them equivalent. Which it does, they’re both just property, and so are women, to your god.)
I’m going to stop here before I get too angry, and take this opportunity to go take a walk and cool off. Also: fuck you for assuming I don’t know your religion just because I’m not a member. What you’re missing is I’m not a member because I READ your evil religion’s evil book and found it morally indefensible.
…
Hit a little close to home.
I’ve got a couple of friends who are currently trying to get out of abusive relationship/household situations, not to mention my own past.
This just makes wy heart weep.

No, just general non-religious imposing of the parent’s controlling ways on the child. My mother isn’t even remotely religious but STILL tries to hide or ruin my stuff and I’m in my 40s because she dislikes it and can’t get over that controlling behavior.
Poor poor Landon, his heart broke there, you can see it. I hope his Dad gets involved in this, he seems like a cool dude, who liked Larissa.
@ Egomane:
The Library of Alexandria.
@ nightmask:
You’re right. It’s a common practice in parents of all (or no) faith. The only difference is religious parents get to use god as an excuse, and atheist parents don’t.
Does Landon have a snapping point? We may soon know.
Best comeback would be to have that painting back on the wall, the house, the car, etc the next day. Repeat as necessary, to the tune of Harry Potter’s acceptance letter.
Parsee wrote:
Harriet wasn’t being misogynistic, she was being literal. She believes Larissa is an actual witch.
Leomon is dead on with here coments on the relationship between Landon and his mum, the tighter she holds him the faster she will lose him. However his Dad is definatly cool
If Larisa painted some image of some religious character, would Landon’s mom dare to break it?
Of course, you realize, this means war!
@ Hmm…:
Probably. She’d probably call it “blasphemy” of some form, so she can continue to use her faith as an excuse for hating her son’s non-traditional girlfriend.
Hmm… wrote:
By her way of thinking… I guess yes.
“You shall not make a picture of God” it’s said and some people extend this to angels and saints.
See Iconoclasm for examples.

@ Agustin Amenabar L.:
I’m sorry, but she is a horrible person and her religion only makes her worse, there is no possible way it has made her a better person. She made a cross sign in the air as if Larisa was a demon because she wanted to play a game in a way she didn’t approve of, she wanted to burn Larisa as a witch for her somewhat wild and extreme behaviour, she thinks Larisa will give birth to the freakin’ antichrist just because she doesn’t like how she behaves. She is using religion as a) a weapon by trying to have Larisa burned to death and b) a justification for hating Larisa. She is just someone that thinks things must be done HER way, and that HER way is the ONLY way.
and don’t forget to rotate your crops…I live in wheat country and it drives me nuts these idiots NOT rotating crops..

Which is still extremely mysogynistic if you know what the word means, where it comes from, and how Abrahamic religions use it.
Can I tie that female canine to a stake and beat her liberally?
Welp, time to kill Landon’s mom 🙂
I am going to skip right over the religious arguments to point out that if this parent isn’t already an abuser she’s heading down that path pretty quickly. She shows all the signs. Not sure if this was the intention but everything I’ve seen of her tells me she needs real help before she hurts someone. This could help explain Landon’s puppy-like shyness and flinching.
@ nightmask:
Okay, that too, but in this context my joke kinda still stands.
Oh, that is . . . Landon, kill her!
Harriet reminds me way too much of the nutjobs in the 80’s and 90’s who took part in the witch hunt against those of us who played Dungeons and Dragons. And the worst part of that was it all started with a article written by a mother who drove her son to commit suicide and then blamed Dungeons and Dragons for what happened. Then the police used it for almost 20 years nationwide to explain why certain things happened, sort of like they do now with Videogames now. Then 60 minutes even bolstered the witch hunts. As a Christian these people make me sick.
I am going to call it right now. (aka playing Devil’s Advocate) The reason Harriet is so against Larisa is super simple. Harriet sees her younger self in Larisa, you know what they say about boys they will usually find someone like their mother. What people fail to realize about that saying is this, they tend to find women who are like their mother before the motherhood mindset takes over.
I agree with a lot of what has been said, I dislike this character a LOT. That having been said, I know that if I were to hope something really bad were to happen to her, and it did, it would make still me feel really guilty. So, whatever happens, I promise not to blame the comic writer and artist for any of my own emotional shortcomings and I promise not to lash out and complain if she is hit by a shard of ice falling off the wing of a passing aircraft.
Read more of the comments. If this is your reaction, then maybe you fit the stereotype. @ Avian Mosquito:
