[0599] Question 3
└ posted on Thursday, 17 July 2014, by Novil
In the next strips we’ll see the reaction of Cloud’s mom to all of this…
- Cloud: Mrs. Cambridge, in question 3…
- Dorothy Cambridge: Yes?
- Cloud: … you gave Sandra two points and me only one although both answers are identical.
- Dorothy Cambridge: Similar, Cloud, not identical! It’s not only what you say, but also how you say it. Men finally have to understand this!
- Cloud: It’s a multiple-choice question.
- Dorothy Cambridge: Your point is…?
M@ Greenwood Goat:
Slowly they turned…..
Inch by inch….
And if you flip the genders, you see how WalMart pays their employees. Also, since it seems a debate on communism has come up in the comments, let it be resolved with this, “Communal property good, abolition of private property bad, the end.”
@ Tsunami:
Communist run China hasn’t done any better than Soviet Russia. Mao was a butcher, not a hero of the people.
Still, the point is valid. Communism isn’t bad in theory, the problem is – as always – when you get selfish and power hungry people involved.
On another note, some people need to get a sense of humour. Feminism is no more a sacred cow than anything else, no more immune to criticism or parody than anything else. Nor should it be.
Saying that this horrible woman – and her real world counterparts – make all feminists look bad is absolutely true. They do, and have. People like this is why feminism has a bad reputation, and why most of the women I know refuse to be associated with feminism. They are as interested as anyone else in fair treatment, equality before the law, equality of opportunity, the problem of violence against women, the active oppression of women in the developing world, and so forth. But the feminist movement is not seen by them as a positive force.
The problem is not just people like the woman in this comic, but also the people like the commenters here that not only don’t condermn these extremist views, but instead condemn criticism of them because of how it splashes onto the rest of the group.
By this logic we couldn’t criticize Muslim Terrorists because they make all Islam look bad (they do, which is why many moderate Muslims criticize the extremists as well). Same with fundamentalist Christians making all Christians look bad (they don’t spend enough effort on criticizing the crazy ones). And most every other group you can name with a crazy subgroup.
Giving a lunatic sub-group a free pass for the ‘Greater Good’ is bull. And you’d think the bad reputation they give to the rest should make that obvious.
In this case the extremists who think the answer to a problem is to make new problems are not to be hand waved away as a ‘nonrepresentative minority’, but instead should be viewed as a problem every bit as bad as what the decry.
A cycle of hatred accomplished nothing. That should be obvious in the various conflicts of the world.
“Justice cannot be for one side alone, but must be for both.” Eleanor Roosevelt
Otherwise you just end up with one side – possibly both – feeling wronged, and the cycle just keeps going around and around.
Cloud looks like he is about to go Kickass on her.
This would be funny if it weren’t because I’ve met people in real life that are like that: so repugnantly, obliviously, disrespectfully inflicting their beliefs on others, so completely impervious to any argument, that you can only avoid them like the plague and hope they don’t cause too much damage.
And before anyone says it, I’m not talking about feminism or any other particular -ism.
Sadly it sees they have infiltrated the most sacred bastion of Manitude of the world:

-.- Aaaand if replacing Peter Parkers soul with Doc Oc’s last year wasn’t bad enough.
@ AHWilliamPenn:
If you’re trying to make an argument about the wage gap, you’re a dumbass. The way these statistics are made is that the average pay of every men is added up and compared to the average pay of every women, sometimes accounting for only full-time workers, sometimes not (which then results in housewive’s income compared to male full-time workers but I disgress). Once you actually compare wages in the same field, the wage gap shrinks, in some fields it even inverts. In identical jobs there is basically no difference in wage based on gender.

Okay, thank you for the information. I will try to make more accurate WalMart jokes next time.

It’s not like there aren’t a bunch of jokes you could make about Walmart. South Park had a whole episode about it.

Whoa, why’d I get a dislike on that, did I edit out too much?
This is probably way to late for anyone to see, but….
Guys. Poes law. He’s not saying feminists are all like this.
On a related note, I find this arc hilarious but I don’t think it’s really necessary. The extreme minority of feminists who are a problem because of their views are exactly that – extreme minorities. I’d be more okay with this overall if there’s a more reasonable feminist message put out there at some point, at which point it’d be a contrast between the two (Cloud’s mom being an excellent opportunity for this, but only if done well since her son is being discriminated against).
On the other hand, there are extreme feminists pretty much exactly like this, even if they make up an almost nonexistent minority of the group. Sadly, I think they are a vocal minority and thus people have a rather negative view of feminism that it really doesn’t deserve. So, if this manages to pull off showing that these extremists don’t represent the group to more people than it alienates or accidentally accomplishes the opposite for, I’d be very happy. I just think it’s a very tricky and risky arc to pull off.
On the other hand, it’ll definitely be hilarious for most 😀
Just kill her already. Preferably by other females.
It’s not the circle you fill in, it’s how you fill it in.
Personally I think that if you want to put down boys it means that you don’t think girls can make it to the same level or already at the same level. This is no longer feminism I thin it’s mysogandry. (Did I spell that right?) If I offended anyone I apologize. Love this comic though!
Gender discrimination at it’s finest Madam Cambridge. Can we please go to the bathroom now?
@ Taking Flight:
The term is misandry (man-hating), unless you mean misogyny (woman-hating). The way you’ve just described it, though, it sounds like both of these are going on simultaneously.
Oh come on. This is nothing but stupid.
If you are going to put up a straw woman, at least make her only somewhat unreasonable, instead of totally absurd.
I am thankful for this arc, really. It’s teaching us an important life lesson. Just because someone professes to be a feminist doesn’t inherently mean that they are a positive influence or even a good person. Feminism is not an incorruptible force of good, it is a movement, and with any movement you have factions within that movement that are bigoted and care more about advancing their own agenda than equality. Some of these “feminists” would like to see some of my best friends put into straight camps.
Oliver is not saying “Hahaha this is what all feminists are like” He’s trying to teach you not to blindly obey a cause that may not be your own. He’s not lampooning feminism, he’s lampooning bigots.
First she interrupts a teacher mid lecture before he could finish and now she’s marking tests based on whimsy? This THIS! is why condoms were invented.

Who’s to say there will be anything left of her at all? :/
There’s really no fun to be had in mocking this obvious a strawman. I’m hoping this story arc ends soon.
So when is larisa going to murder this woman for her obnoxious bullshit?
Wait… MRS. CAMBRIDGE? There’s a Mr. Cambridge?!
Congrats on 599 comics! I hope 600 is something special!
Am I the only person who wants Cloud to go home, complain to his mom, get slapped across the face and asked why he let himself be treated like that, and one pep talk later, be leading the resistance against Cambridge?
No? Nobody? All want to see Ye-Thuza take things to this teacher personally rather than organising a sword fight between her and Cloud or letting cloud get personal justice?

Are you confusing Socialism with Communism? If so, that’s a really bizarre thing to do, but I guess I would not be surprised since darn near everyone does it.
I could break down the differences for you, but they hardly matter since the true form of either philosophy is unattainable without effectively demolishing the operations of the world as it stands today.
… So you are saying… Cloud has to cheat to win?
Man, that’s low. Forcing men to cheat infront of their girlfriends at this age. For shame, Mrs. douchebag.
@ Y?:
Actually, I pondered the reaction Cloud’s mother would have to this woman a few strips ago..
But I just realised, it would probably be an even better turn-about if it were Larisa’s mother that stepped up.. Just because..

Apparently, they don’t have bubble sheets in Germany…
Does anyone else notice how similar she is to Delores Umbridge from the Harry Potter series?

Wait, better idea!
Fire with fire.. Landon’s mother saves the day! Only extreme absurdity can defeat extreme absurdity!
I hate that bitch. I hope Larissa sets fire to her house.
Novil, you really should have just abandoned this arc. The further it goes, the worse your fan base gets. :/
Wow, this feminazi character is so absurd, it would make TUMBLR blush.
By the way I found something cute racoon related: http://cheezburger.com/8257558784
@ Landbark:
We don’t. This is just a representation of the radical feminazis that infest places like Tumblr, such as Suey Park, who thinks white men are not entitled to correct opinions.

You mean the comment thread? There are a LOT more people who don’t read or post in the comment section.
In the grand scheme of things, idiots will be idiots and will only grow up in their own time, but abandoned story arcs and loose ends will haunt you forever.
@ dark ninja:
More like the real life version of feminism. Seriously unfunny and incompetent.
is she actually an homage to umbridge? Like Dolores/ Dorothy Umbridge/Cambridge. In either case it’s invoking the same levels of rage.
And this is why I don’t call myself a feminist even though I have some feminist ideas. Too many of these people turn the word feminism from a title to an insult and a turnoff…
someone give cloud a butter knife
@ Landbark:
Because idiotic arguments such as, “We need to get rid of blue/pink blankets when babies are born!” Is one of their main goals.
The Point is you’re a sexist maniac. You know I personally don’t know any feminist activist but I’m pretty sure they don’t act like that.

Except that they aren’t. In my experience, most people using those terms derogatively are using it to imply that the person is always looking for some social justice issue (real or manufactured) to champion, rather than being a person with a genuinely-held position on a legitimate issue.
There’s also the fact that, given the strong implication from those terms (when used derogatively) that they are fighting over a non-issue, that it is not “all the marginalized people of the world”, but more likely “whiny upper-middle-class white people from first-world countries”. You rarely see people getting called “social justice warriors” when the topic is, for example, stopping genocides in African dictatorships (or, hell, anything about helping out the people in disadvantaged nations from oppression).

I haven’t heard of these sorts of bake sales before, but they sound like yet another misunderstanding of the wage gap studies.
There seem to be a lot of people that think that the studies showed that women were paid, on average, 75% of what men were in identical job situations. However, this is not at all what the studies showed; they showed that the average yearly earnings (not wage; this is important because some included part-time workers) within certain fields were lower, but most of them did not examine identical job situations at all.
This is a very important distinction, since all available evidence points towards the wage gap not being a product of overt sexism, but rather is the result of men and women being socially-conditioned to make career decisions that result in differing pay. For example, men are statistically more likely than women to put in overtime, to routinely travel out of town on business, etc., and those job conditions typically result in higher pay as compensation; additionally, men are more likely (again, due to social conditioning) to negotiate harder on starting pay, to pursue raises more aggressively, etc.
The best ways to deal with overt sexism and social conditioning are very different from each other, so this sort of (distressingly common, I might add) gross misunderstanding of research is quite counter-productive.

Only everyone reading the comic. I don’t think he could have been much more obvious about it, short of naming her “Delores Dumbridge” and drawing her as Imelda Staunton with an evil-double goatee.
@ McDouggal:
It doesn’t look like satire to me; it looks like a like story arc by someone who really doesn’t like feminism but has no rational reason for their dislike. So they invent something that doesn’t exist to back up the irrational dislike. Really ridiculous arc and very much below normal standard. Disappointed.
That weird. Not what you say but how you say it. Really how do you on paper????
I love Cloud’s facial expression in the third panel.
This clip comes to mind when I see it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7OSX79BG19c&index=24&list=PL403378851785696C
“In the next strips we’ll see the reaction of Cloud’s mom to all of this…”
If it doesn’t involve Ms. Umb…*ahem!*…Cambridge being dragged into a dark, evil forest by enraged Centaurs I shall be *very* disappointed.
