- Scarlet: Hey, you!
- Ferrus: Yes?
- Scarlet: Will you help repel the Grondans?
- Ferrus: No, we’ll only monitor the ceasefire.
- Scarlet: But doesn’t Avernum have a secret superweapon that could pulverize all of Grondar?
- Ferrus: Not to my knowledge.
- Scarlet: What a pity!
- Ferrus: Your daughter is quite bloodthirsty, I have to say.

Congratulations on being assigned Father Figure by random military general, Tibor!
Chuck
Tibor 𝘪𝘴 her father he legally adopted her.

Sure, but how would random military general Ferrus know that?
hkmaly
I don’t think he’s general.

It’s pretty hard to pulverize most countries. It’s a land area problem. You’ve got to break up a lot of stone, soil, and in some cases vegetation. It might be easier, though a fragile effort, to flood and freeze them instead.
I think Scarlet’s heart is in the right place. 🙂

Its true. We talk about the end of the world if nuclear war breaks out, but if we launched every weapon in every arsonal at perfect optimization to make the single largest cataclysm possible, it’d desurface maybe .1% of the globe. Like, it’d be the end of everything above ground, but even some above-average fallout shelters would be completely untouched.
Seige warfare is much more effective as long as internal supply isn’t sufficient for the contained population.

Well, it generally depend on what would you use. Something like Teller’s SUNDIAL 20-gigaton device, exploded on circa 50 km altitude, would be able to create atmospheric plasma shrowd hot enough to incinerate everything under it in the radius of few hundred miles. More powerful Teller-Ulam devices are also possible, of course.
BlackDragonSlayer
The super-secret weapon is only powerful enough to pulverize half of Grondar.

Got to say that the follow-on effects from widespread nuclear war won’t be restricted to the areas reduced to glowing rubble*. I used to have access to software that would show fallout plumes from airbursts depending on prevailing wind and megatonnage. Massive amounts of particulates would be injected into the upper atmosphere, reducing sunlight, mostly in the northern hemisphere.
*The rubble wouldn’t actually glow, but I wouldn’t camp there, either.

It still wouldn’t be nearly as destructive as the meteorite which killed dinosaurs. Nor it’s likely to make extinct as many species as Great Oxidation Event. Nuclear war wouldn’t be end of the world. It might be end of human civilization, but not event that is sure.
Dilandu
Okay, clarification. Airburst – when the fireball did not contact the ground – did not produce any fallout. The fallout is caused by ground bursts – when the nuclear fireball is contacting the ground, and hundreds of tons of soil, material, ect., are drawn into the hot plutonium plasma and irradiated. So if you limit to air burst, you would have little fallout to worry about.

Magical fallout…well, that sure sounds interesting to study. From a distance. Maybe dragonback, 2 miles up.
hkmaly
I don’t think there is safe distance for magical fallout. Granted, the fourth wall USUALLY provides enough protection.
Mersharr
To be fair, most children are bloodthirsty. Also, her biological parents were shot in her presence, so it’s kinda justified too.
hkmaly
“Her parents were killed by Grondans” is what Tibor SHOULD say. That military leader looks like needing some reality check.
